  • This video provides a basic outline for how we will go about studying linear algebra by attempting to answer the question: What is Linear Algebra?
    Sources: The example of a linear system, as well as the terms 'row picture' and 'column picture,' are taken from Gilbert Strang's Introduction to Linear Algebra text and supplemental materials.

    You should stretch in this video that when solving the problem in terms of vectors that the coordinate system of the graph is NOT X and Y. X and Y are the lengths of the vectors. The graphs axes should be deliberately changed to i and j. I spent a lot of ti e realizing that in the vector model the x and y axes cannot carry the x and y labels.

      Thank you. I was trying to figure out how the X vector could have a Y component in it and the Y vector could have an X component in it. It's actually the i and j vectors scaled by X and Y respectively.

    How different is College Algebra from Linear Algebra?

    • @skate2late
      @skate2late 7 лет назад +1

      I think College Algebra is just the equivalent of Algebra 1 (basic manipulation of symbolic numbers in equations) , which some students take as early as 7th grade. In comparison, most of those same kids won't take Linear Algebra until college because it is much more advanced and abstract.

    • @aidanhodgetalks6055
      @aidanhodgetalks6055 9 лет назад +1

      +cesar Aguilar That would depend on your major, but I would recommend calc 1 then linear algebra. As a chemist and Geology student, i find linear algebra to be a godsend and a tool to give me an edge over others as somethings are done much better using matrices, it kind of culls out the repetitiveness, and it actually impresses people because you will either be doing magic infront of others and employers and it gives you respect amongst people who actually use linear aglebra who look at people who don't do it as idiots. throughout undergrad, i've found nothing that can't be really be done in linear algebra including quantum mechanics. That being said, i advise taking it eariler, so that you can have a greater understanding of calc 2 and 3 because you will be able to see the problems from more than one perspective and correct yourself if what you are doing in calc 2 and 3 doesn't match up well with what you get in linear. If you take calc 2 and 3 then take linear, you will hate yourself for doing things the long and tedious way the whole time.

    • @aidanhodgetalks6055
      @aidanhodgetalks6055 9 лет назад

      cesar Aguilar for software development, the sooner you understand linear the better because alot of the programs you will be making will involve matrices for database storing and referencing. But that also depends on if the class itself assumes you've had calc 2 and 3 or not, i would ask the professor or your advisor.

    • @atharvas4399

      Linear Algebra does not require any Calculus whatsoever. However, a ability to reason abstractly is highly necessary. This only comes with experience.

    Immediate confusion ! First vector is taken from the origin to [ 2, -1 ] ....second vector isn't, isn't this ambiguous?

    • @Sincerelypiper
      @Sincerelypiper 7 лет назад +1

      second vector is added to the first vector, that's why it's not taken from the origin but from the end of the first vector, just like adding two regular numbers say 2+3, u first count from 0 to 2, then u continue counting from 2 (+3 steps) to 5...hope this is simple enough

    Your definition has the same problem as Wikipedia's. You use the word linear to define linear algebra.

    • @johnpaulcook3028
      @johnpaulcook3028  8 лет назад +11

      Thanks for your comment -- I disagree. My problem with Wikipedia's definition is that it's not a definition that's very enlightening to a beginner. My definition is certainly far from perfect, but I think does a reasonably good job of framing linear algebra in terms of something that is familiar to students.
