This is so cool. The normal path, in the electronics industry, is to reduce the number of moving and mechanical parts - fewer knobs, fewer buttons, no slides at all if possible. For that reason alone I find this unit exciting!
all of it's technical genius and originality would be worthless if it didn't sound any good, but it does. it's sounds amazing and as you say, it's so superbly thought out. in a world where everything is becoming digitised and softsynths are cheap, they've made something that embraces the mechanical and done it superbly. they're a super interesting company and i hope they keep coming up with original ideas like this. great demo, btw!
Your Patreon membership is by far the best value I have found on the internet. You keep creating so many great unconventional music tools. So glad I joined.
It’s basically stuff that’s been done before in a new package. It could have been done much like old electrostatic organs were with 12 wheels that contain all the notes and octaves and waveforms.
Glad to see the MOTOR SYNTH on your excellent channel, David! It's a real pleasure to see your appreciation for the engineering and attention to detail that went into the MS! Your outro track was very moving! Enjoy the instrument and keep making music!
I supported their Kickstarter too. I wish we’d been given the opportunity to upgrade to the MkIi since it was already in progress before they shipped our backer units. I’m always concerned that those of us who put up the money to make the project possible in the first place will see our support dropped since they immediately moved on to a different approach to create the mkii. I would have happily paid the difference just to get the vocoder included with Mkii.
Thank you su much for making such a sampling library, I've been using it for all my projects now. It's so nice to have such a quality for a price this affordable. Love your work so much !🔥🔥🔥❤
Motor Synth MkII owner here. Just came to say that I love it. If you have the budget and you're into sound design, you will love it, too. Definitely check out Gamechanger Audio's deep dive series that explores each module of the instrument. A+ learning content.
So cool. Bambu Labs does something similar to make sounds on their 3D printers. The company was founded by senior DJI engineers and some of the motor related components are holdovers from their drones.
You could even use the motor noise as a live source for other instruments in your setup. Among many other possibilities. Not for my needs (or budget) but this is as cool as it gets!
The track you've made reminds me a lot of Disasterpeaces soundtrack for Hyper Light Drifter... Come to think of it, a lot of these sounds give off Hyper Light Drifter vibes. Amazing video in any case, this is such a cool synth!
Perfect timing. I was thinking about getting it during the sale, still pricey but less so lol. Your videos are so lovely. The sounds of this thing are legit
a few years ago, when my sibling started drone racing I casually wondered how create this instrument, and a few months later the motor synth came out lol
5:30 Man, it's like I'm watching some kind of avantgarde sci-fi show and different melodies is themes of different characters put on top of larger score of the show, representing the world characters are in! For some reason this accompaniment reminds of satellites and sirens.. so coooooooollllll.....
this is very cool, and very similar to yours in principle to yours. diference being that yours is basicaly a PWM square/pulse wave (being on when the pattern string passes on the magnet, off when not), and this is multiple constant forms, probably this is able to PWM if you can assign and LFO to the voltage that goes to the motors so it speeds up or down a little with time. another cool idea would be to use your motor/pickup oscilator as a kind of fm source to another more traditional oscilator.
I hope they have already sent one to this great synth museum in Switzerland. I mean, imagine how after 30-40 years young dudes will look at this synth and be like "Yo, dude, this thing is kinda awesome. I wish we could have the weed that grandpas were smoking to make this synth".
A modern version of the venerable Hammond organ. But I'm not sure if the optically picked up triangle, square and sine waves are bringing anything to the table. It's the magnetically produced sound that would be unique to this technology,, IMHO.
Honestly, where do people just find money to develop such a thing? It's insane to think about the disparity in resources for some people vs. others. It's awesome but at the same time music programs in public schools dont have anything close to this level of equipment or teachers who have any expertise in synth/ electronic music production. They make you wait until college for that, which again: access + money.
One of these days someone is going to make one of these and totally by accident it will soften rock and allow it to levitate so we can big monoliths and pyramids. 🤔✌️😁
My god this is awesome. If I was a musician with a high budget, my room/studio would be full of experimental synthesizers like this one
me tooooo
If you look closely you'll see eight tiny mice running fast in the motor cores.
right!!! but how do you get the cheese in there???
That is by far the coolest piece of equipment I've seen in a while.

every month, I have a new inspiring sound sample from being a member of this Patreon. most definitely the best value in the market for unique sounds.
Something that works is engineering.
Something that is unnecessarily complex,
but someone made it anyway,
is art.
It’s basically stuff that’s been done before in a new package.

I'm so happy I backed their Kickstarter back in the day. One of the few synths that supposedly can not be emulated by plugins, and so much BASS

it annoys me your content is so underated, RUclips please bless this man, he deserves it

I think this is one of my favorite demos you’ve done. Especially the song, hit me in the feels. Gave me film score energy
5:47 gave me chills. Beautiful.
Wow, something that actually sounds unique, even now the synth world can have surprises.
Just knowing that the sound you're hearing was produced in a unique and interesting way makes you enjoy it more, I think.
This channel is exactly what I'm looking for on the internet, especially on RUclips: originality and creativity. Cheers from Italy dude! 🍻
Give it a spin. You knew exactly what you were saying!
The music out of this thing reminds me a lot of Boards of Canada, especially those grimy presets that you tried out.
love the sounds this device makes
This live stream of Dave discovering dungeon synth is incredible...

this thing is awesome. the presets are so unique
i used your Decent Sampler, it was a very awesome plugin!, i used it on one of my song, Awesome stuff David!!
So cool.

Bambu labs 3d printer is made by ex dji engineers, with drone motors, and all it's audio feedback sounds are produced using the printers motors,
Mentioning Simon is kinda funny because he did a video about the Motor Synth MKI a long time ago.
brilliant machine, I woud love to get one!
Far too groovy! I love the '80s aesthetics it kind of reminds me of a Tascam home tape studio.
Like deployed 👍
saw this when it released, boy i cant wait to get my hands on one irl
These is so amazing!! love it!!!
Great video, those chords and lead sounded really nice. I have the MKI, haven't reached these expressive sounds quite yet - more inspired now though
This is soo cool!
I always knew that my drone was musical :D
This thing is crazy and it sounds so good. But the price tag 🤯
a few years ago, when my sibling started drone racing I casually wondered how create this instrument, and a few months later the motor synth came out lol
The piece you ended up with sounded like a freaky little circus
I feel like these synths are making he music you hear throughout Aperture science.

Aa can hear all the space and pixley background tracks this thing could make
Only this guy could make me watch a video about drone sounds
So an optical tone wheel with a controlled rotation speed? Neat.
exactly, yes
I hope they have already sent one to this great synth museum in Switzerland. I mean, imagine how after 30-40 years young dudes will look at this synth and be like "Yo, dude, this thing is kinda awesome. I wish we could have the weed that grandpas were smoking to make this synth".
Nice tune. 👍
This is very neat.
what the freak!! i love it!!!!!!

brushless motors are neat
I wish * had shown us the synthesizer with motors going into maximum low tones and maximum high and as noisy as possible? Do you know stress testing?
this reminds me of the video game "Dungeon of the Endless"
so cool
3000 huh? I think I’ll put a pick up on an oscillating fan and then read that through a Samplr on the tablet and call it a cheap day date date ha ha
Nice, but actually nothing new under the sun... a good overview about electrostatic tone wheels from Sam (ruclips.net/video/UcbkyYdV2kE/видео.html)
Did anyone else whistle when he said the price?
I really expected this to be the sounds of the motors rather than motors driving sound with pickups, pretty cool though!
I wonder what you could get from specifically miking the motor noises it makes, as you play...
5:46 and suddenly it's a kurzgesagt background song
Honestly, where do people just find money to develop such a thing? It's insane to think about the disparity in resources for some people vs. others.

I'm still wondering why the drone motors haven't revived something like the wurlitzer sideman or some other motor driven drum machine.
If Thom Yorke got a hold of one of these …
Did the first electric organs not generate sound in a similar way?
I think it would be possible to make a basic one homemade for under 100$ 🤔
i should want one of these but that price tag lol
So pretty
I think it's gonna be almost perfect solution for making ambient music. I'm gonna try it.
After 4:30 is the more interesting presets, etc.
Can I use DecentSamples in Ableton?
Look Mum No Computer has some videos about a 50s organ that operates on a similar principle
yes, tonewheels!
Well, in my opinion electricity in greatly overrated, I'm waiting for the diesel version and the petrol V8 version. Somethin' realy ballsy... 🤠
as someone who is into both music and DIY FPV drones this is AMAZING! I wish I could get one so bad!!!
Can someone link me the video of that bowed synthesizer?
One of these days someone is going to make one of these and totally by accident it will soften rock and allow it to levitate so we can big monoliths and pyramids. 🤔✌️😁
Where can I find the song you closed the video on?
That noise kept me away from it
I really really wanted to have one, just gonna get a Nina instead now.....
Song in the beginning has a familiar ssound...y
Its a Hammond synth 😊
❤👍🏻❤️
Why is music equipment sooooo expensive 😭
Portal 2 OST generator
Motor sound would drive me nuts no thanks
bro's voice: 👨
bro's hands:👴
hipsterness intensifies
This sounds like a machine for Thom Yorke
An amazing instrument but way out of my price range.
Very odd in the best of ways.
The one thing that is annoying about this you can only use it when you make loud music the noise from the motor is so loud 🤮
After 4:30 is the more interesting presets, etc.
