Mr Johan, thank you for the information, and as a senior in knowledge, referring to the traditional boerboel breed, I ask you kindly to start putting up pictures or pointing people in the direction of breeders that you know of today that uphold these standards so that we can also get a clear image of what 'the traditional boerboel' actually is. As you said, nowadays, a lot of money is involved, and unfortunately, the original characteristics have been meddled with. I salute your dedication and passion for the boerboel! Great work. Kind regards.
Would a dog like Mighty Bismark be a good example of a Boerboel that displays those signature head features of the breed? Look who I found in some old foreign video about Boerboels (link bellow) :), 15:15 is our Mr. Swart 11 years ago! Dogs used to look different than nowadays. ruclips.net/video/4xCUzvSxmmo/видео.html
That's a brilliant idea sir! Do you think it is possible to really appoint a group of true breed experts with a right mindset to select a number of dogs that are good enough to represent the original Boerboel (like it's been done many years ago)? I'm sure that there are tons of people who are on a difficult quest to find a good authentic Boerboel dog, a puppy from parents that display the true original qualities of the breed or breeders who want to breed for the right reason to embrace and preserve those qualities but are misguided by many people, appraisers, organisations and confusing or contradicting information they come across. It would be brilliant to have a possibility for a reliable evaluation that could serve as reference point for true breed enthousiasts, byers and breeders.
Hello Johan I know you are 100% correct about Boerboels. I identified an emotion in my dog which has shown up in the past as warnings from the dog to me to keep my distance from his raw food and bones but it showed about magnified at 4 years of age. He was gaurding raw meat food that he could not finish. I know thats a mistake that my wife and I made to give to much. It stressed the male dog for a few hours. When the dog was not looking I moved the meat away from where we walk and I got the scent of the meat on my hands. I did show the dog where the meat was but he followed me , smelt me and attacked me aggressively and his teeth was rapidly biting against my skin but thankfully he did not take a bite. He seemed angry that I had touched and moved the meat and that the scent of the meat was on my hands or person. He smelt me before he became aggressive. We had a special relationship before this happened and after a week we are very close again. I now dont give meat or atleast wont give more than he can finish and have more boundaries now. Less stress about gaurding food and he is ok. However I doubt this is a correct character of a Boerboel to turn on a owner who has treated him well or is it purely a mistake I made. My other dogs have never reacted as he did. I did get my Boerboel from a a blood line from a well known if not famous breeder. I wonder if this had been tested for in the breeding stock they could of eliminated this issue or this instability of turning on a loving owner. Please correct me if I am wrong. I live in the Overberg South Africa. The same dog has no problem with me handling or moving his food bowl when it has kibble in it only high value food such as meat or meaty bones is the problem if he must gaurd it. If I hand feed him raw meat until he is full its not a problem ao long its not laying around in the yard and he has to gaurd it stress him. The rest of the time the dog is obedient, friendly etc. No other issues. When the incident happened and he smelt my hands had the scent of the meat its as he was saying through his frustration and aggression that I should give his food back but it was only the scent of the meat on me
Ysterberg Mastiffs are not Boerboels. The organisation openly cross breeds and admits it. They registered their own breed and it is no longer a Boerboel. Ysterberg Boerboels used to produce high quality Boerboels. Ysterberg Mastiffs use the name to their benefit but they do not produce Boerboels any more.
Money ruins the human breed, and it ruins every other one as well. Boerboel, to me, is the perfect dog. It bothers me deeply to see the breed ruined the way it has been due to shows, ego and greed. I once saw somebody advertising 'micro-boerboels', weighing 50lbs, and it angered the hell out of me. I would really like to converse further with you on these matters.
thank you Johan , enjoying those NWA Podcasts, looking forward to a third :)
