Great talk as always, Pete. On a similar note, I wish RUclips paid creators like you more. You provide so much informational content that genuinely benefits everyone. I find it hard to believe that RUclips can show me 10 15-second ads throughout a video, yet the creator barely gets paid. Small obscure music channels, some with only a few thousand followers, provide genuine enjoyment to so many different people throughout the world, but I can guarantee none of those people are getting paid (despite the amount of ads that show up before their videos). I believe that if RUclips provided better incentives for creators, especially those who provide information and education, it would make the platform better as a whole. I'd image many people would be a great help to many people on RUclips but would never even consider a part-time endeavor into making content because there is no reward for it (at least not monetarily - I would feel pretty great if I made something educational that helped out many people).
On a more positive note, I'm glad you can find great sponsors that give you enough to get by. Maybe this summer I'll start putting out more music and other videos on here.

Thanks so much for your support and kind words. Yes, it’s a struggle at times to justify the effort. And if I wasn’t spread as thing I could definitely add even more value. But it’s comments like yours and knowing that I’m genuinely informing and helping people that keeps me going. 👍

Great pod Pete, discussions and perspective like this help me to remember and appreciate why I started creating music in the first place, which has nothing to do with Spotify / streaming and the like. I can’t deny that it’s been a super positive experience participating in the studio live and slaps community for feedback, motivation and inspiration but I would be fine just creating for my own sense of achievement and expression. That “value” to me is priceless.

Love it my friend. That’s such an important thing that a lot of people miss. You need to clearly define why you’re creating and what success looks like for you.

29:30 god I so nearly walked out on making music after getting bad feedback…
But in the space of a year I’ve gone from being able to play around grade 3/4 to grade 7 piano self taught, while almost entirely only playing my own compositions.
I don’t actually have a grade, but I can reasonably easily play the grade 7 ABRSM pieces… with time.
Two of them were actually immediately easy though.
In the past two weeks I’ve been fiddling with one of my dad’s guitars, and I came up with a song I really like.
I smashed out my first song last year and every one I asked said it was really good for my first one, and that felt great.
But the moment I got bad feedback and the external interest in it died down, I felt like quitting.
I’m a physics student and music is a hobby for me.
But I’m not going to let anyone’s opinion get in the way of something I genuinely enjoy.

I have no desire for fame (fortune might not be that bad 😄) so I just make music for fun. My value is in the creation process and having people enjoy what I’ve created.

I do it out of catharsis and then fun l guess, don't like doing live performances so the options of being a bedroom producer are ideal for me but still getting money for your 'art' would be nice but ahh well... even the cats have left...

I record and release my basic tunes simply for posterity - it's kinda fun to say - yeah - there's a youtube channel you can look, or say hey siri, play my song such and such.
But my daughter - we're spending money at a proper analogue studio with superb, historic gear, session musicians etc. Even at 'mates rates' it's $3,500 a song - sounds damn good, and every sound is a real person playing a real instrument - but Dang - far from 'free'...

Right off, I was thinking you were going to be pounding "Epidemic Music" that all of RUclips is using..
Okay if you have some Diddy stuff sitting around that you're not using and decide to sell it, getting a fee up front...well okay. But, the problem is when Music Supervisors use them, and now that sync, back-end money , (ie: the big bucks) although cheaper for them, then goes to Epidemic, not you. You got your couple hundred, they get their thousands.🙄💸

@@PeteJohnsMusic Hey Pete...so just did a copyright on a song with my writing partner last Thursday....it has been SO long since the last one, so we had to crawl our way through it to not make mistakes. When we got to the end, I called the copyright office to make sure it was the right form ($65 two writers=not bad) .. If you are the only writer, it's only $45 to register your song with the lyrics, online, and there's an option to do a group of songs for one fee...saves money!. It asks what country you're from...just sayin, "Grown-Ass Man"...I still think I you should market it to some country music artists....do it Pete!!!👍🎶 🤗
