the guilt of being the child of an immigrant and then choosing to not go to college is so real. personally, my parents have never pressured me to go and i’m so thankful especially being a senior who has no idea what they’re gonna do after high school. thank you for this vereena.

I dropped out of college because I found it ironic that college costs more than the pay of jobs you're studying to get, and I wanted to go to art school 😭. If I wanted to be a doctor I would've stuck it through, but I'm not paying $10,000 just to learn stuff I can Google.

this is why it’s important you know what you want to get out of school and what your degree is going to get you. your salary coming out of school should be guaranteed to be higher than tuition/the debt you go into. This is why liberal arts majors and art majors end up as coffee baristas because there are no transferable skills to specific careers. If you are interested in the arts work on your craft outside of school, go debt free, or minor in the arts.

From a teacher, I’m so proud of you Vereena. I always tell my students that college is not the only option and that’s true. I regret the debt I have from getting two degreees and I still have to work my way up from the bottom. It’s an investment but a very pricey and taxing one. I almost dropped out so many times and it crushed my mental state. At the end of the day, do what is best for you. Because college is another institution that wants to take money from young vulnerable adults and get them locked in a chain of debt till they are 56 like my mother and still paying her college debt.
Take care of yourself love and I’m sending you a big hug! Can’t wait for the podcast! We can all use some self compassion and love ❤️

    I’m proud of you!
“Giving up” is so circumstantial. Like truly there are times when you can push yourself through to achieve a better outcome but if it’s causing deterioration then that’s absolutely taking care of yourself and knowing what you need.
“Giving up” is a concept that we’re all plagued with bc of productivity mindsets and hustle culture
But no. It takes true strength, power and love to know when to change paths and it is sincerely scary
and I don’t think I would have the capability of withdrawing from college without feeling like a failure and being hard on myself about it. Self acceptance and forgiveness is sooooo so so hard.
So I am proud of you and to anyone else that is struggling with something, especially if it’s struggling with yourself in an internal battle. It’s something you can’t escape from bc you eventually have to deal with it

Ive been going through this at the moment i graduated early from highschool and had a bunch of plans on going to college and stuff for my future and then since a couple weeks ago ive gone through a whole switch where im not even sure if i wanna do that anymore. Everything I want to do in the future like job wise isn’t really something you need to go to college for. Im just stuck cause i dont have any money to even start anywhere and im going to need to move out soon. Seeing all these young people getting rich so fast kinda makes me feel like im doing something wrong and or am behind. I keep telling myself its fine and everything i wanna do in the future will happen and that im not even 18 yet so i shouldn’t worry about it but i still can’t help but worry about like all the time.

Ngl I was scared when I saw your video because when I first fully decided to continue school, it was when you also did, so you were a partial inspiration. But now I think it's a full circle moment because I'm secure in my decision to stay in school and you are secure in your decision to leave.
We should normalize not finishing school, especially college, it's not needed for some people and it's way too expensive for most people.

hey v & everyone else, i just wanna say it’s okay that you did dropout. i think everyone here can agree it’s better than having you on a heart monitor from stressing yourself out 🤭 I also want to say, i haven’t started college/ uni (whatever u wanna call it) Mainly because i couldn’t get through yr 12/13.
In fact my teachers had to tell me what to type word for word because i physically couldn’t do it. If i don’t have a passion or even seek enjoyment my brain just shuts down and goes blank (also i suffer with anxiety and low moods)
I remember when making that decision people started to look down on me because i wasn’t going college. I even remember someone telling me straight in the face “ SO WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO IN LIFE YOU WILL NEVER SUCCEEDED SO YOU ARE JUST GOING TO SIT AND HOME AND DO NOTHING?” I was honestly kinda sad that they assumed that they thought i was just gunna let my life fly past me. I sometimes wonder if it’s because of my body and appearance, if you have heard the “all fat people are lazy stereotype” (tbf i never really told them what i was doing because i believe in evil eye and i like being private but also.. WHAT IS THIER BUISNESS ANYWAYS 🧐) i did unfriend them after the lazy assumption because why would i stay with them yk?
What i am trying to say is, Many people get swept up with the concept of education and how wonderful it is as a front but don’t pay attention to themselves. So when the realise its not for them or end up dropping out due to illness or even (to put it nicely) windows xping yourself. then getting to ride the nee noor because you feel like a failure. (which actually happened to my friend sadly, she survived tho) When in reality you’re not a failure, and you may have been scared to leave the confort zone of individuality or just couldn’t handle the stress. Whatever the mountain was.
As of now, i am working towards what i want to do & changing my mindset for the better. I want everyone to remember that There’s so many people, who never went to college and still did incredibly well. So just do what you wanna do and be yourself, who cares if you don’t fit in. As long as you are happy yourself and not committing any crimes.
I honestly suggest reading the two books
The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse
    and
    a gentle reminder.
    It really helped me.
I put a few quotes at the bottom of this. But anyways, I know this is a long read. However, i hope this helped.
    Gentle Reminder Quotes:
“Please, just trust the timing of your life. You don't have to have it all figured out by a certain age; you don't have to chase a version of success that does not inspire you.
You just have to learn about yourself”
“Do not vilify yourself for the ways in which you had to comb through your sadness, for the ways in which you had to learn how to quiet your mind and protect yourself from all that was trying to bury you…Forgive yourself for doing whatever you had to do to ensure that you made it to see another day.”
“Listen to the part of yourself that knows there's more out there for you.”
P.S i also didnt like the concept of going to school and just treating you like a grade for them to look good. I am here to learn not feel judged and stressed yk? anyways i am done with the essays

honestly it takes so much maturity to admit to yourself and others that you need change and college isn't for you. We grow up having to deal with immense pressure on grades and school and college and everyone expects you to follow a certain path that was deemed "correct" years ago, but truth is, life is different for everyone and the school system a lot of times end up destroying creativity and a lot of times even make people hate the industry they used to love (so many of my friends and myself included have felt burnt out aftert college), but i'm very happy that you're choosing to explore a different path that is true to you as a person and remeber, you didn't close a door, you just opened a window, nothing in life is ever satgnant.

PLUS I LOVED MY LIFE BEFORE COLLEGE if anything college just jumpstarted my clinical depression. you got this, I watch your videos sporadically but I know you'll do fine with whatever you choose to do instead. live in your truth!

Vereena this video made me emotional and idk if it’s me pmsing or this just genuinely hit me but I just want to say I look up to you so much. You are so strong and you know what you want and how you will get that and I’m just so proud of the fact that you accepted college wasn’t for you and rather than dragging it out you did what was best for you and your future. I’m a junior in high school and the topic itself always stresses me out because I was undecided for the longest time and now I think I figured out what I would like to study going in to college but seeing the fact that you are okay and things didn’t exactly go as you had planned when you first thought of going to college is just very motivating and reassuring. Also the first gen issue weighs so much on all of us who have immigrant parents but I’m glad you were up front and that they are being supportive! I love you and I’m excited to see you grow and accomplish your goals

I’m 19 years old. Have a few thousand dollars saved. Have a part time job. Almost 0 friends. Currently failing all of my classes. And I’m lying to my parents about it.
I don’t know what I want in life and what I can do in life. Being a good student is really all I have to make my parents proud of me. And it’s been a total lie. My parents have done so much for me that I feel like I don’t deserve. They gave me a beat up car. Pay for my car insurance. Pay for my food. Give me a roof over my head. So much and I can’t even do college the one thing they want me to do.
I’ve been in community college for 2 years now trying to get an associates degree in Business but I’m no where close. I feel like I’ve lost 2 years of my life when I see all my old friends from high school only 2 more years away from starting professional careers. In relationships, traveling around the world. And I’m just here stuck in life.
I’ve been told time and time again that I’m just as capable as anyone else and that I can do anything I put my mind to and I 100% believe that this is possible. Almost every start of the semester I feel like it’s another chance to start again and change my life. That first week of school I’m 100% committed to school and get to all my classes on time. Finish all my assignments early. Get to work on time and everything. I’m perfect. But by the 3-4th week I’m pretty much done with school and stopped attending and only go to work for the 10-15 hours per week I get.
I guess I just keep telling myself that it’s ok if I miss 1 class and that I can go next week but then it just starts to keep stacking up until the point where I feel like I’ve missed too much of the semester I should drop the class.
They’re about to find out about my grades soon because of a meeting with my counselor and I’m terrified about what’s going to happen.

Vereena, im praying for your recovery. im praying for your family's steadfastness in God. I always thought formal universities for the creative arts like fine arts, cosmeteology, fashion, and especially cooking....you dont need to attend school for a creative passion unless school is the logical and necessary stepping stone to your goals. Love you so much. You and everyone around you are in my prayers. im new to your channel in the last few weeks. i love watching a new vid of yours, and i cannot get enough! youre such a light in this world

I knew straight away after high school that college is not for me and will never be for me. In the moment i still am in colllege but i want to drop out so bad cause my mental health has not been so good lately. In this whole video you took some words out of my mouth. I dont need college to be successful, I dont need college to be able to do what i want to do in life, i should follow my heart and desires. Truly, Thank you so much vereena for this video cause i thought my feelings and thoughts were not valid until you made me see that it was. ILYSM

Vereena I'll be real with you, school is so hard and most people go on to further education because they have to. Especially when we're talking fashion, the world is competitive and without a degree it's hard to even get a foot in the door. But you were more successful at 16 than most people are in their entire lives, with an established brand. And that means you can start to do the things you're passionate about without having to throw a whole lot of money at an unnecessary degree. Ik this was a couple months ago so you're probably already content but I hope this has made you really happy. There's no reason to feel guilty or defeated, so many ppl are proud of you, you should be proud of yourself for getting that experience and getting to know yourself a little bit more through it 💕👏

  • @riva6298

I totally understand where you're coming from. While I personally feel it's important for *almost* everyone to pursue at least some sort of degree even if it's just your associates, I understand it's not for everyone. I guess the good thing about college is that it will always be there but the oppurtunities you're currently being presented with won't always be there. Just know that you don't always need to be a full time student, you can always take one class at a time or just go back if/when you feel the need. I think a degree is a huge accomplishment and college can give you some sort of structure or extra responsibility but not everyone thrives off of that. I'm happy you made the decision which worked best for you :)

You know what, you're totally right. I mean you seem to be doing okay for yourself being a RUclipsr and now having your own podcast, so it's not like you depend on that college degree. And if you feel the lectures aren't going to help you achieve your goals, then there's no need to continue, because College and University are really stressful and take up a lot of time (it's basically a full time job).

I wouldn’t write off school altogether but it’s the right decision to do it when it feels right, and if it doesn’t feel right, or you need more time and freedom to pursue your current career, do it!!
College will always be there, the only thing that’ll wean is motivation.
Remember you can also just take 2 classes a semester and basically chip away at an associates degree (if you have the money to go slow, I’m not sure what your financial situation is like)
Or online options (not for everyone)
So yea! Do what’s right, take your time, be open minded.

I’m debating dropping out of college, taking a gap year, work and save up and go back again when I have enough money. The only issue is that I’m nervous that I won’t have enough funds to pay for tuition and materials needed for the program. My entire family have supported by financially and it feels like I’m slapping them in the face for it. Thinking about the energy and money that I’ve spend on this programs kinda pushes me to keep going but I’m so tired school. I just want to relax for a bit and actually think about my future instead of rushing it.
