Great 10-minute video, had me really thinking. At some level, it seems we are leasing our machines from apple as opposed to owning them, I should be able to retrieve my data at a simplistic level. A customer brought in 2 Apple machines from a deceased relative,I extracted everything from the HDD via SATA cable, and from the newer machine, I connected her SSD M2 onto an adaptor, if she hadn't been able to have that data they would have been missing pictures and videos to show at the funeral. I'm a nobody novice from Northampton when it comes to data recovery but I genuinely felt good about doing that job.. Great tool, new to me, so another lesson in the trade. When I saw all the water damage it almost looks too much corrosion to repair (even with repair water leaves its damage long term, they'll be back), so to tell the customer hey your board is mush but it's ok because I got your data saved, this has to be a good outcome for them. Seen the tool in the states not sure I've seen it here, sadly this side of the pond engineers are missing many angles in the trade, instore we go to a point and not past that.
Thank you! Yes I love it when people get their data. This board wasn’t that bad but I am too busy to fix boards for clients, I only offer data. If you need this tool, search eBay for Apple migration tool. Keep in mind it will only work on 2016-2017 and it’s about $400+shipping I’ve had it for years, only used it a handful of times but it surely made us good $$
@@forensicguy Hey Chris someone offered me a CELLEBRITE UME-36PRO with all the cables etc, is this a tool I could put to any use, do I need a license, etc, seems a wee bit old but some of my customers do have old locked phones with their data locked away. Appreciate your advice, many thanks..Patrick, London,UK.
I don’t think you can do anything with that. First it’s not a UFED but just a transfer tool. It’s worthless. There are plenty old Cellebrite machines for sale that are either scams or very old hacked units
Great video! Maybe the reason Apple has removed the connector, and therefore also a possibility of recovery from a faulty soldered-on SSD, is that they want their customers to use iCloud as their backup storage.
@@forensicguy Nor will most people's data fit. This is (to me) just another abusive practice in the wake of Job's death that cook has allowed their customers to be abused by. Well honestly there were dozens of such devices sold on ebay. Basically this is simply a pci-e to usb controller combined with few power ics for the ssd. I believe it could be replicated since it does not look like apple ssd on this devices uses something really different unlike newer ones. New t2 machines have data recovery option with DFU but unfortunalely this software is only available for AASPs and server-based, so unlikely to leak. One of thunderbolt ports got debug lines to T2, and DFU recovery actually gains access to the SSD to write hidden bridgeOS partition. It also wipes the disk on catalina+ devices, so technology is there. Unfortunately, t2 recovery mode wont work with most of common boar failures but would be really helpful with the dead CPU( t2 is basically a SoC, fully capable of transferrimg data to/from SSD)

I THINK, but cannot completely confirm that the Data Migration Tool requires a Thunderbolt 3 port. I've tried USB C ports and they never worked. Also adapting Thunderbolt 3 - Thunderbolt 2 for older macs using Apple's adapter didn't work for me either. It had to be a Thunderbolt 3 port to work... at least, that's what it seemed. On TB3 it pops right up.
Hi, thanks for the information you're sharing. I have an MBP 15" 2017, recently it was burnt out due to a lightning strike that affected the logic board and IO ports. My question is, is it possible to use this tool to recover the data in the SSD without fixing the whole logic board and can the tool detect the SSD? I really appreciate it if you could respond and give some insights.
Hi thank you for the great video. I currently have a Mac book pro 2017 with water damage and I’m trying to recover the data. Is this the only tool that does the job or is there another way to recover the data?
Hi, this is exactly the one I have - and the issue is that the keyboard stopped responding - except for the power button. I was so stunned, I didn't think to turn off the password upon starting so now I'm locked out and can't get to the data. I've tried plugging in an external keyboard but it didn't react to that. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you and greetings from Australia, Lisa
Hi, my Macbook Pro A1706 has a dead onboard SSD. I'd like to ask someone to fix it but I also care about the security of my data. My Macbook doesn't enable the FileVault. If it has been repaired, will someone be able to read the data without inputting the password?
it seems like one must have the password to access the data by the tool in this video. If the Mac's data is not protected by FileVault, can this tool still access the data without a password? If it cannot, is there any other tool which does not require a password? Thank you for your answers.
Hello, just saw your video while searching for a way to do the data recovery on my macboo pro as the SSD is soldered on the motherboard. Do you know how to take care of that?Or can you do that? I am in Alberta, and I desperately need my data on my macbook pro.
Thanks for the super video! I'm facing the exact same scenario for my 2016 Mac and I really need that device. I know you said it's hard to find, but I really need it to extract my SSD's data from my dead board. Can you please please let me know where did you find it or if your friend can let me know how I can order that device? Would really appreciate it.
I got question about the later models of macbook pro without that connector... Is it not fitted on the later boards or have they removed the tracings altogether?
I am not sure I can answer that. I am sure the traces can be found but I wonder if T2 chip would prevent accessing the SSD if someone would fit the connector. From what I understand is that the connector was just a direct NVME connection to the ssd but I think the T2 might complicate direct access
@@forensicguy thanks for getting back to me, is there a different method for retrieving data from newer MacBook Pros? Otherwise this might be worth exploring
@@MrMaxwell94 from memory, the MacBooks with the T2 chip (and also the ones with the M1 processor) may have the storage encrypted, if that is the case, there is pretty much 0 chance of getting any data

First comment, I am back ...
No this is bullshit
