It's called set up and pay off. You set up a character by establishing them learning something new, something seemingly irrelevant at the time. Then later you have them save the day by using that skill. It's one of the oldest storytelling tricks in the book.
Boy its a good thing he decided to do this on Dec 7th. Any other day and he would have been grounded and likely court martialed for being a jackass and risking his plane, his crew, and the carrier
A slip coming in from that altitude would carry enough speed to rip the hook right off that plane, or.. snap the line and behead any deck crew within range. But comon, everybody knows a Dauntless was as nible as a spitfire.
with a dead engine you dont have the hydralics to pull them in. The side slip trick is true, though the exact path taken is extremely risky. It's a case of valid on paper but probably never done, or if done never acceptable to the IRL forces.

There's a lot of time-cutting in the film. In Real Time he could shave-off a lot of speed with multiple side slips not shown in this scene. Still bit fast for a 70-knot final approach but also nowhere near 200 knots anymore.

I just realised that the destroyer in the foreground is a Sumner's class destroyer with it's distinctive dual 5in cannons

Why is there a Gearing Class Destroyer here? Its a few years to early
It's actually either a Somers or a Porter class destroyer, both had twin mounts and predated Pearl Harbor, being built in the 1930s.
