In 1977 the Jewish music scene was quite different than today. MBD had already released a few albums, with the album "I'd Rather Pray and Sing" being released the year before, Avraham Fried hadn't yet began his professional adult career. Instead there was the Ohr Chodosh, Yeshiva Diaspora, the Rabbi's Sons, and some others. Even the boys choirs of today were either just starting out or non existent. While Miami Boys choir were just beginning out that very year, Tzlil V'zemer was still a few years away from forming, and the Yeshiva Boys choir a few decades.
In the USA there was Eli Teitelbaum Pirchei Boys Choir, in England Yigal Calek and the London School of Jewish Song. Yigal Calek a legendary composer and choir director was so popular back then, that in the early 1970's a young MBD would open for concerts by the the London group.
Established in 1968, The London School of Jewish Song released in 1976 "London Live" an 11 track record of song recorded live at concerts while touring Europe and the USA.
The footage below was recorded off of a live performance on Local Minneapolis television, prior to their Chanukah concert arranged by Chabad of Minnesota, directed by Rabbi Moshe Feller.
Introducing the choir is a younger Rabbi Manis Friedman long time Chabad Shliach in the Twin Cities, and director of the Beis Chana school for girls.
Watch below the Pirchei London Choir sing "Shir". Soloist is Philip Rosenberg.
Part two of this series will Iy'h be released in the coming days.
I remember their concert in Leningrad in 1988. It was amazing. More than 2000 soviet jews come together for this performance - the first jewish concert for tens of years. For many people this concert gave start for aliyah or tshuva.
wow!!! I grew up on those oldies! never ever saw footage! that's amazing. thanks a lot for the upload.
Amazing, being thrown back to 1977. What a time. What a trip. Remember how we all went sledging (sledding) in Minnesota? 2200 views in one day
. Thank you Yigal Calek!
Robert Lederman an over forty year old clip of this quality is certainly a rarity.
@@manisfriedman Unforgettable. You bought roll-up sleds for each of us. We stayed with you at Beis Channa fora few days. Such hospitality!
@@Gruntig2008 Totally.
Rob - sledging in Minneapolis - twas amazing
I believe this video has the audio from the tape 'London Live' which was from a Brooklyn performace. Art Raymond introduces them in the begining of that Concert.
I was in the choir a few years earlier, but I recognise a lot of those faces. Incredible
Tel us some names please
Unbelievable but these boys now at my father's age
tHE ESSENCE IS HIMSELF COME, HIGH-VALUE GREAT WORTH!
Thanks Shiezoli, very cool!
Sehr schön 🙏
For years (until just now actually) I tried to understand the Hebrew - "Shir shir, aseetu Hashem" I never found out (until now) what aseetu meant.
Took me a few concerts to work it out too! I thought it was " Hassitu".
Robert Lederman they didn’t give u guys a sheet with the lyrics or the sort?
@@visioncenter And after the li, li, li bit it's English again! Who knew? (Not that I could make out what I thought was Hebrew.) I only found out by putting the video on slow.
@@Gruntig2008 No. Most of our songs were from the tefillos. They were in Hebrew. And the words to this song were pretty simple. If you're expecting Hebrew, you're just going to assume that "Hassitu" is a word you never heard before.
It's shir shir I sing to hashem
Rabbi Friedman is the older brother of Avraham Fried.
interesting. Any of his sons is also a singer?
@Tuli Wertzberger Thanks. A family with many Great voices.
@@moshe7382 The one and only Benny Friedman
Rabbi Friedman was looking quite stylish!
He was, all jews do 😂
That's what sells. Payment, not product. Rubbyglitz.
Who's the first soloist? Is that Moshe stern?
That's what I thought. Can anyone confirm whether it's Moishe?
@@r44agm It's Philip Rosenberg
