Brillo is a scouring pad used to clean pots and pans. It might mean bright in Spanish, but I believe in the context of the song and knowing Zappa's word play, I've always assumed it was a description of her hair.
Yeah, Brillo was a very well-known brand at that time, the leading steel wool scrubbing pad before the invention of the plastic ones. As someone who was listening at the time, the reference was obvious.
Such a fantastic album. I had the great pleasure of seeing Frank Zappa twice in concert. His son Dweezal is keeping his dad's music alive, Dweezal is also very good in concert. RIP FZ
Camarillo California was the location of Camarillo State Mental Hospital. During the sixties it became notorious for the practice of Electric Shock Therapy. Growing up in Southern California mispronouncing the name and jokes about Shock Treatments were common. The character in the song is certainly crazy so I always assumed Camarillo Brillo was in reference to the hairdo the treatments caused.
Absolutely you must continue with the whole album. As others have said it is one of Zappa's more accessible albums. Great instrumentation and fun lyrics.
This consecutive three album streak is a great intro into Zappa for any newcomer.. Overnite Sensation (1973), Apostrophe (1974), and One Size Fits All (1975). He has so many masterpiece albums before and after this, but these three are a very accessible on-ramp for newcomers, to prepare and ready you for even deeper exploration of Zappa’s universe.
Oh yeah , I saw this and had to hit play ! First heard this album over 40 years ago , freaking fantastic ! It might sound strange to some , but ZAPPA is in the top 5 of my guitar gods ! He does know how to play !
As with " Apostrophe ", Tina Turner and The Ikettes are the uncredited backup singers. For some reason " Dirty Love " was always my favorite from this album.
My dads girlfriend had a cassette of this when I was about 15. I had moved from my mothers house to live with my dad who was still drinking and smoking off his divorce. His friends were all Zappa nuts. As soon as I put the tape on I realised that my previous taste in music was rubbish
Back to some more Zappa. Over Nite Sensation is one of his more accessible releases but nevertheless one of his best albums. I’m The Slime, Dirty Love, Zomby Woof, Dinah Moe Humn and Montana. All great songs. I remember your Montana reaction way back when this channel started your reaction was funny. Your face said it all at the time.
Yeah it's one of his best records, largely because the pointless noodling is kept to a bare minimum...and I'm talking as a fan of The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution.
I don't know about other places, but in Charlotte one could often hear "Is that a real poncho...or a Sears poncho?" It was one of insinuating that someone may be BSing you. There was a time when Sears sold clothing. But after this song, the thought of buying clothes there seemed preposterous, unless it was overalls. I think they finally went out of business. Growing up, the only "porn" we had in the house was in the form of bra and panty ads in the Sears catalog, which came like clockwork, so to speak.
Great album, great song. I bought this when it first came out. I remember those days fondly. LOL One of Zappa's more accessible albums yet one of his best.
"I'm so sorry you havea head like a buffalo" hence the Camarillo Brillo. Great reaction for a great album. Have a listen to One Size Fits All or Sheik Yerbouti
My guess is that "some bugs had dyed it red" is a reference to copal, a red dye derived from dried beetles. At one time it was used to give Campari its distinctive red color, but people freaked out about bug dye so they switched to a carcinogenic petrochemical instead, to everyone's relief. (JK about the carcinogenic - the EU has much stricter food additive laws than the US.)
"made" it red. Close enough. I think it just means that the bugs (lice) had bitten into her scalp so much that the blood from her scalp turned her hair red.
Agree, him & Brian Eno. Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Prince etc all very good but nowhere near the mastery of Eno & Zappa at whatever they put their minds to.
This is one of Frank's "greatest hits". I personally prefer his more complex side, but there's something to be said about the talent needed for writing a repetitive song like this without it ever getting boring. There are SO many verses and only a couple of choruses, and while the simplicity of the chord progression is compensated for with some very busy playing from ALL of the musicians, the real meat of the song is in the lyrics. I suppose you could almost call it Dylan-esque by Zappa's standards in that the lyrics are ultimately more important than the music. And I don't think that's a good thing. It's a joke song designed to have commercial appeal, and I prefer Frank when he doesn't care about such things.
For Frank, musically, its all rather prosaic. Now lyrically..... yeah, when have I ever really cared about lyrics :) Essentially an ok poem with a dull backing track.
Frank hated drugs he just had a wild imagination, his guitar sounds were truly unique , he had over 60 albums and over 600 songs...one of the very best...
You should definitely continue with the rest of this album. This album and Apostrophe are very similar, and they are great introductions to Zappa.
The Toads Of The Short Forrest are actually crabs in her lower Brillo. True. Look it up.

Brillo is still the leading steel-wool soap pad.

I always took "she had that Camarillo Brillo, flaming out along her head" too mean that she had red hair the texture of a Brillo pad.
That's it, plain and simple.
Of course you have to continue. OverNte Sensation is an excellent album, one of my top 3 from Zappa. Go on JP, go on…

Dweezil is currently on tour,. If he is going to bein your area I highly recommend attending a show.
Take a look at the album cover. Full of little images referring to the songs. Not sure where the "Roadies Delight" came from. 😉
Glad to see a reactor listening to something different from Frank. I highly recommend 50/50 on the same album if you like the unusual from Zappa

Ralph Humphrey is the drummer. Sadly, he passed away last year.
Tom Fowler, the bass player, sadly passed away on July 2nd this year.
