- Iron deficiency in plants causes plants to have pale green leaves with darker green leaf veins with reduced growth and yields. Iron deficiency mostly affects plants that like acidic soils, however it can affect any plant. In this video I describe what the symptoms of iron deficiency are and how to treat plants which are deficient. At the end of the video I have time lapse footage of a basil plant recovering from an iron deficiency to show how well plants can recover once they have been fed with iron.

Yes, the old leaves on most plants don't green up, just the newer ones. I'm glad this video was helpful.

Great video as always ! Bro is it aphids that we see during the recovery timelapse ? These little suckers are so annoying when they get onto our plants !
Yeah its aphids, notice how fast their population increases as the time lapse progresses. I find that even if I leave one on the plant, a few weeks later and there is hundreds of them.
Gardening at 58 North yes it’s insane how they duplicate ! Did you manage to get rid of them ? I’m currently having a battle against them ! They seem to really like my downstairs schefflera plant...
Yes they seem to have all gone now, I use soapy water to kill them, but it takes several attempts to completely eradicate them using this method. Also it means you have to wash your basil leaves well, otherwise it tastes like soap.

Wait a minute. At 3:13 you say giving a plant iron sulphate will raise the Ph. Isn't the opposite true? Iron sulphate will lower the Ph.

Hey, Very informative video. I have about 30 basil plants in separate pots that are around 3 months old. They all started producing yellow foliage in the last week just after I fed them. Could this be because of an Iron deficiency or did I overfeed them? I bought a box of Sulphate of Iron and I'm unsure how much to give them. I put a pinch around one plant and watered it in and I diluted a teaspoon full in 2 litres of water and have 10 plants sitting in it. Is it easy to poison the plants with this or can they tolerate it well? Have you any advice on what I should do? Thanks.
Nice vid, new sub here. One question, how much does soil temp have to do with iron uptake?
It's pretty important, a low soil temperature will slow down a plants ability to absorb iron even if there is enough of it in the soil. For most plants the cut off is around 10C, but for more tropical plants such as Basil the soil needs to be above 15C. Although as most of the growing season the soil will be above these temperatures it is usually only an issue in spring and factors such as soil PH are much more important.
Interesting that the deficiency only corrected in the new leaves. The old leaves remain chlorotic, even with a foliar spray on the leaves?
Yes, it depends on the age of the leaves and the type of deficiency, some nutrients are transported around the plant easily, whereas others move around less and are incorporated into the leaves as they actively grow.

I watched this video for few times but couldn't catch what was used to recover the plant. I'm complete novice when it comes to planting. And I have exactly that problem with a plant I started with store bought basil. It grew from a small stem with four leaves to a plant I was hoping to start harvesting soon but leaves started to yellow.
Its Iron sulphate, but Iron deficiency tends to be rarer than nitrogen deficiency in basil, so I would first try a balanced feed and see if that helps. Also some balanced feeds will also include iron sulphate.
Is it possible to use the expired ferrous sulfate tablets for plants?
Yes they will work, just use a very small amount at a time as too much iron is poisonous for plants.

PLEASE help me my 5 month old raspberry which I purchase at Sam's bare-root was doing ok, I use a large pot with very good soil, a couple weeks back the leaves started yellowing, Google for advise and purchase liquid iron, applied according to directions, now my raspberry is showing brown burn on the older leaves, today I completely soaked it trying to get rid of the iron, I don't want to lose it.
Sounds like it could be fertiliser burn, make sure you allow the water to flow out the bottom of the pot to help flush out any excess. It could also be the time of year, each cane only lives for two years, so often at this time of year the old canes which have already fruited will start to die back.
What you given it? I mean which iron fertilizer?? Ferrous sulphate or?

So do the already yellow leaves eventually regain their green color or not completely?
The leaves which are already yellow will become slightly greener, but the older the leaf the less it recovers. The oldest leaves will remain very yellow. Any leaf still growing and all the new ones will have dark green leaves, eventually the old leaves will fall off with age and the whole plant will have healthy leaves.

My kumquat had iron deficiency. I fed it and the new growth looks healthier. However, there is a relatively smaller section of branches, where new growth is still pale. How is that possible?
It could happen if the plant is in the ground and you only fed a small patch of the soil. The roots on one side of a tree do not always transfer the nutrients to the whole plant, some times just one half. Try feeding it more evenly or wait to see if the feed naturally disperses through the soil to the other roots.
The tree is inside a container and I feed it equally on all sides. The problem in my opinion is either girdling roots (which I am unable to detect easily) or bark damage (there is a relatively meduim sized "scar" on the branch). Which one of these makes sense to you?
what did you use for iron treatment?
I used Iron sulphate, you can buy it in most garden centres. Although Iron is only needed in small amounts and iron sulphate is acidic, so you only need to use a very small amount.

As far as I know magnesium is used to create chlorophyll. Although useful in plants, iron is used to make hemoglobin in our body.

Magnesium is the metal ion found in chlorophyll, but iron is an important nutrient in the metabolic pathways for synthesizing chlorophyll. Additionally, iron levels in plant cells upregulate or downregulate nitrogen assimilation pathways, and as you might be aware, nitrogen is an important element in the chlorophyll structure.

That should work, but only add very small amounts at a time, Iron is only needed in very small amounts for plants and large amounts are toxic to plants.
Can you dryclean them too or does it have to be ironed?
Pretty cool, the one thing i would say to do differently is add time stamps to the time lapse so we can better gage the rate of recovery.

Its the iron deficiency due to it growing in pure tap water.

My dad gets extra bottles with 325mg. He gives them to me. Often times I mash it up between a folded writing paper with a measurement cup. It becomes a dust. I sprinkle it on the soils. I would say, be careful !! If it's windy haha 😂 yes I have been covered in dust 😂 it does help a lot.

I used a liquid feed with iron sulphate, following the instructions on the package for how much to dilute it. Then added it to the water.
