I've been a huge fan of Sonny's for years, but this video shows the up-close view of his amazing technique. Many times I've been listening to him on cd and wondered what he did to make some of the sounds he does. Thanks for the clip.
The best performance of this beautiful ballad I've found to date on RUclips. Just a shame that it cuts out 2/3 of the way through the song along with the mediocre audio/visual quality. But even then, I still appreciate every second of this magnificent performance. The Slide Master™
First time I heard Sonny was when I bought his Grant Street album in 2005. I'd never heard anyone play slide like that, I was so blown away by his tone, the songs and his singing too.
I actually remember reading about Sonny in Guitar Player back in the late 80's. He was the first guitarist I remember hearing about who frets notes behind the slide, though I later learned there was another guy named Scott Colby does it also, though I think his playing is very different from Sonny's.
Sonny is simply the best slide guitaist ever AND he has the best technique with the right hand i have ever seen, don't understand why he is still that unknown although he makes so fantastic music
He plays harmonies with some of his other fingers behind the slide. There used to be a vid' on here with this same tune with him explaning how he came to discover how to play separate harmonies, behind the slide, whilst still playing slide. Top drawer player, no doubt. Would love to see this guy live. Can't believe he isn't a world celeb'.
Does anyone know how hard this piece is? Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love it, especially the beautiful slap harmonic slides. But it seems that the talent and skill went into the crafting and songwriting, and then the wonderful use of techniques, rather than full on virtuosity. If I put my mind to it, could I learn this, or are there hidden traps to fall into? Either way, this is awesome. What a tone!
Can I add something to that? I think it is very slightly different. What I am almost sure happens is that he mutes the strings with his palm. Because the slide is in place, the strings can still vibrate on the other side of the slide. Then, when he lifts his hand off, the string vibration on the 'neck side' of the slide cause the strings on the pickup side to start vibrating again, and be audible through the pickups. Does that make sense?
"I think that the reason he sounds so different is 'cause of where he's from. I can hear fiddles a lot in his playing, just from the way he raises the notes. Slide is just another voice you can have. You can really make a guitar sound like a person, and Sonny knows what that's about." Dobro ace and six-time Grammy winner:~Jerry Douglas
Now, I SUCK at playing slide guitar. But someday when I get the chance to practice it, THIS will be the ONLY thing I'll work on. It's the perfect, "play me something on your guitar" piece: It's a BEAUTIFUL song with plenty of HOLY SHIT technique to blow people away. The man is a genius. Period.
Check out 2:11-2:15 and beyond, where he plays the harmonic on the 6th string using his right index finger and thumb and moves it to follow the chord change.
nice thing about the comments about sonny is he isn't anywhere near pop enough to attract the idiots. he's the real deal. sonny if yer listenin', thanks !
What about 'one of the best MUSICIANS on the planet'? He'd surely be as good as he is on the guitar if he played the banjo, the trumpet or the ukelele...
That's the most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard.
Everytime I hear him play... I am left speachless!!! What a fine artist!!
Just Incredible! A Master of the Guitar! He is great to see at a live show.
Great tone, great timing and phrasing, great melody, and great guy! I can't say enough good things about Mr. Landreth!
Glad to find this on you-tube! Sonny Landreth is amazing!
I just can`t get enough of his magical sound!!!
he knows his harmonics. it's all in the touch on the strings combined with the amp/effects settings. Man it is heavenly.
Can we see and hear some more of Sonny and his band?!!I just can`t get enough of that sound!!

This guy is....amazing. Technically brilliant AND plays music that makes you glad you're alive to hear it. Not a lot of players have both.
You gotta be a guitar player to truly appreciate and understand what your hearing from Sonny. A true master dedicated to his craft !!!
Fills me up every time.
this guy is one of..no.. THE most original talented slide guitarist ever

Hate that this magnificent video cuts off when it does, yet I'm still eternally grateful for its (hopefully) permanent existence on RUclips.
I've been watching this video since 2007.
Same. Magnificent performance.
@@elgiacomo Still watching it now.

just beautiful to listen to. if i was to play another genre it would be this.
Thank you for uploading. It made my daY!
This guy is amazing.
that thing he does where he slaps the strings and makes it sound like an echo is the coolest thing ive seen on guitar
Easily one of the most underrated players out there.

I saw him at festival international in Lafayette,la an he was AMAZING
Amazing harmonics!
Nobody plays guitar like Sonny does...

ok that was amazing...
So underrated
He's got a song called "Ubresso" he played at Crossraods that's sort of his own "Cliffs of Dover". Major key, melodic, short, and totally badass!
What body part wouldn't you give to have the talents of SL, or Justin Johnson, or Taj Mahal, or Derek Trucks running through your hands?
Its Magic my friend..Does anyone having Port of Calling on video???
@GuitarMaster5001 whoa!! I totally thought that was some weird effect!
Un-matchable tone, simply perfect.
How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, Practice, Practice!!
You can bet that Sonny has been practicing most of his life.
A master in his own time.

Wow just wow
amazing... what pickups does he use in this guitar?

I've only been playing a couple years. What am I supposed to do with this?
slide this good helps me to apprecate Duane even more! thx for posting..
I wonder what make of compressor that is. It's very heavy and fast.
by the way, is this an actual song of his? ive looked everywhere but cant find it!
my god. how does he get those crazy sounds like at 0:31?
One of the few pickers that use 4 fingers and thumb to pick with. This list includes Ry Cooder !
i would say he is the one of the best slide players around
what amp is he using here?
Can you say Line-6 delay pedal-looper.
He's a badass though. Not many slide players touch him:)
A+
Best video on youtube?
Also, is this on any album?
i think he just turned the volume down or changed the channel
Line-6 Delay pedal with looper.
Don't get me wrong he's awesome and can't be touched by many slide players:)
Looks like he used the side of his plucking hand like a violin bow & brushed the strings lightly as he lifted his hand.
hey could you please send me that mp3 as well? thank you.
Unearthly!
better, he does thing that no one else on the planet could do in their wildest dreams.
what does he do at 0:57?
Plays slide like Geddy too!
and Rory gallagher (is that how you spell it?)
i try this thing all the time and it doesn't work!
fucking genious!!
hows he doing that thing... @1:37 ???
I know he plays through a Dumble. I can't say what he's using here.
I hear a lot of Ry Cooder influence there...a lot.
nice thing about the comments about sonny is he isn't anywhere near pop enough to attract the idiots. he's the real deal.
sonny if yer listenin', thanks !
yeah i know.
hey "dyingforastrat" is an awesome name. u get one yet?
there's something christmassy about that riff at 0:48
Decent Stuff
@ Genessender watch, learn, assimilate, emulate and practice practice practice!
what ever buddy...put up a video of you and we'll see
Dudes- your left brain will never understand what's goin' on here.
There's more to "music" than that.
Let's not forget Duane Allman!
Think I'll throw out my slides now...
What about 'one of the best MUSICIANS on the planet'? He'd surely be as good as he is on the guitar if he played the banjo, the trumpet or the ukelele...

This is open E
I definitely have a man crush...
I'm very good with pedal steel and lap steel, but every time I try something Sonny does, it just sounds like a mess.
harmonics.
haha very true sonny owns so if you think his stuff is decent than you must be derek trucks who is the best slide guitarist out there right now
Derek Trucks is very very good. But for my money, Sonny's a little better. With all respect.
I am so speechless I... wow...
yeah! I do see a bit of a resemblence...
