  • ‪@nelsclinevevo3899‬ is one of the most creative and thoughtful guitarists I've ever met. I've been a fan since the mid 1990s, when I stumbled onto 'Ground,' featuring the Nels Cline Trio. Piece by piece, album by album, Cline never repeats himself as a player or as a composer, yet he always sounds exactly like himself.
After disbanding the Nels Cline Trio in the late ’90s, Cline founded a new three-piece unit called the Nels Cline Singers. Over the years, the Singers' records have included additional musicians, and the group's latest release - 'Share the Wealth' - features a six-piece iteration. Two other recent projects - Lovers, and the Nels Cline 4 (both including Julian Lage) - have also been more expansive.
In our April 2021 conversation, Cline explained his current interest in more layered sounds, and the creative and practical considerations that have led him there. This is an excerpt. You can watch our talk in its entirety - as well as dozens of other guest-tips and an extensive library of own lessons - on my Patreon channel, Guitar Tips Pro: / guitartipspro

As a musician, this was exactly what I needed to hear.

I recently had my mind pulled in many different musical directions, and came to a similar conclusion. Good to hear!

Adam, Francis here. This is too crazy for me to view. I was the bartender and club booker at The Alligator Lounge / worked New Music Monday's, every Monday, for years. Nels, Bob, Michael and I were friends. I think he even thanked me in the liner notes on "Ground". Too strange. If you were there then, we surely met. I played music (guitar) as well back then and Nels would come see us as well. I love Nels. What a strange confluence. I still communicate with GE Stinson on social media. Any way, small world.

What?!?! This is the craziest coincidence imaginable! [For everyone else: Francis was my landlord for the past year; we never spoke about music.]. Do you also happen to know Phillip Greenlief? I think the one time I played at Alligator Lounge was with Phillip.

@@AdamLevyGuitarTips Phillip looks (from photos) familiar and the name rings a bell, but I can't say that I totally remember him. Wow, though. I can't believe you played at the Alligator. Milt Wilson the owner was friends with Nels. Milt passed away from cancer after hiring me in 1993, I believe. I worked there the entire time it was open until it closed in 1998, I believe. So many memories. My band Dark Room used to play on Wednesday nights on a night we started called Club No 4/4. New Music Monday's was such a special night with so many great musicians coming through. Nels and Thurston Moore were good buddies and I have fond memories of hanging with them, drinking Bass Ale, ha! I still remember standing outside with Nels and Thurston in 1994 when OJ Simpson drove by as he was being chased by the police in his white SUV at the 10/405 Freeway, and all the helicopters above. Strange memories! Ha. Anyway, @NelsClineVEVO, a big hello to you. I still talk to Petra Haden and saw her recently in NY. Also I see and chat with Heather Denton on social media (who is from Boise where I live now!). Small small small world. I loved those years at The Alligator.
