You can avoid having a hard time removing the cover by applying a very thin bead of vaseline around the inner edge of the canner, where the wall is at an angle. Needs to be redone every 2 or three uses by wiping away the old vaseline and adding a new bead.
My second planting hasn't done worth a hill of beans (pun intended! haha). Ole dad comes up with some good ideas from time to time. Appreciate you watching.
I love all your videos, but the canning ones are my favorite! Well next to the unbelievable cuteness of new baby animals. I sure appreciate you and Saundra sharing your farm life with us.
I am in North Texas, and I just picked some my Blue Lake beans today. I have about 50LF or so. I got a large basket of beans and I plan to can them. We ate our last jar from last year this week so, yaaa Blue Lake beans can up very good.
watched some videos on Worm Compost Tea used as a foliar spray and the amount of damage from Japanese beetles was greatly reduced. Totally organic and maybe worth a try
Thanks for the video! First time finding you on here, great timing I guess. I have raised beds 3’x4’ and I planted pole beans 3 rows of 8(x2 in each hole) and I believe all germinated. I wondering if I need get rid of some of them?
I really enjoyed every minute of this!! Thanks for sharing the process! You sound like us we are from NC! Lol just found your channel definitely subscribed! This is my second year growing a garden and I love the videos!
This was a great informative video- we just grew our first batch of these beans and I underestimated how much room they needed to grow lol. But I did do a small harvest yesterday and wasn’t sure how to can them next. Ps- we grow organically as well. Neem Oil is the only thing we used- just a single treatment
How far apart did you plant the seeds? Your farm and veg beds look beautiful. I havnt had a lot of success with bush beans which I need to become more skilled at growing. What about your soil, what type of soil do you have and what's in it? Iv got sandy soil which requires a lot of building up. What type of soil do beans love. Thanks for sharing your canning process too. Cheers from Western Australia
Been there and done that! Jar breakage happens and poor sealing happens for a couple reasons....overall...great job and video! I feel if you have not broken a jar, you did not can very much. Jar failure is not always fault of the jar but because they were over filled, or caught a cool breeze that shattered the glass. I have used very old blue jars with no problems. They may be considered vintage, for me they are just blue jars!
Great video! My wife does a lot of watch bath canning for jams and salsas. Haven’t done much pressure canning even though we have my Mom’s canner. This took some of the mystery out of pressure canning. Question: did you have the jar lids in hot water before you put them on the jars? Couldn’t see what you were plucking them out of with the magnetic stick. Thanks again for sharing! 👍🏻
Yes. They are in hot water before we put them in the jars. I think it softens the seal a little bit. Then we pick them out with the magnet. Thanks for watching.
Wow how do ya have such lovely green pathways between the beds? Mine is always muddy lol. I guess because my soil has a lot of clay in it. When it rains hard my foot sinks into quite a bit!
After canning, do these have a similar texture to the canned green beans you get from the store? My son is picky and I have to admit I am too, although I will eat fresh green beans if that's what's offered, where my son won't. I'm hoping he will eat the blue lake bush beans I have spent a lot of time learning how to grow and growing!
@@SheratonParkFarms Thanks for the info!!! I've been wondering about it now that I'm growing them. Don't really want to make fresh/home-canned and store-canned green beans at the same time if I don't have to!
That is amazing!! Only one in compost? Can you do the same for container planting? I would think it would be too much fertilizer. Can you can with an instapot? Thank you for sharing!
That is actually the bottom part of a turkey fryer that we use to deep fry turkey at Thanksgiving. Its a pretty simple little contraption. You can probably pick one up at a local hardware or big box store. It works great! Appreciate ya'll watching.
I'm a canning newbie... The failed ones aren't complete inviable correct? They can't be saved/shelved but they can be eaten that week or something, right?
I'm completely confused right now! My mother and grandmother always taught me to NOT tighten the lids before going in the canner. How does the air escape when you do that??
How many quarts of greenbeans did you end up getting from your garden throughout the season? I'm trying to plan out for next year. I got three pickings from my greenbeans this year but they were very sparse from two 4x3 beds. I think I need to build a much larger Greenbeans bed to get to my minimum goal of 60qts.
I believe we ended up with about 39-40 total. They did really good this year. We had plenty of rain. Sounds like you may need a little bigger beds. Appreciate y’all watching
Why don't you add some Lemon Juice to the Bean Water and not salt !?! That way, they would keep their lovely 'Green' Colour. To that of dull 'beige'. (Sorry, reminds me of School Dinners here in the UK, back in the 70's !!! Everything was over cooked and washed out in Colour (!) And so mushy ! I've always wondered why, Stateside, that it is called 'Canning' when it is Glass Jars !?! In the UK it's called 'Bottling'. Even though it's Jars too. 😆 Know that Napoleon came up (probably a lacky did the work of...) with / Invented Canning, to feed the French Army... But that was back in the 1800's !!! The French love their Green Beans or 'Haricots Verts' and they keep them the full length, and cook them to stay lovely and green with a bit of Lemon 🍋 Juice... French Cuisine isn't beige... Just saying.

Great harvest...your bean plants look amazing. I planted mine in a raised bed and way too far apart. I'm going to follow your dad's advice next year.

Thanks for step by step for me the newbie
Awesome video, thanks for sharing ❤
Thanks for sharing your lovely farm with us. Enjoyed seeing your harvest!
Loving the 3 to 1 ratio. Thank you to your dad!!
A lot of work but worth it you guys have inspired me today to plant these Blue lakes and new Sub here Brotha...

Mine are about an inch long yesterday. I can hardly wait!!!

Hello, I'm new to gardening and canning. How do I prevent my beans from being mushy when I open a jar for dinner? Thanks.
Great information

Enjoyed this! This year will be our first time planting Blue Lake! We used to be white half runner people. Excited about them!!
Thanks. Blue Lake are my favorite and no strings! My grandparents on both sides grew them and its really about all i've ever eaten.
great video. keep'em comin'

This finally showed up on my feed , what were you guys sitting on the buckets ?
They are called bucket stools. Picked them up at a farm show last winter but they are also on Amazon. Love them!!! amzn.to/3269Sjz
The jars may have failed because they had been in the oven. I don’t think oven heat is good for them.
Wow how do ya have such lovely green pathways between the beds? Mine is always muddy lol. I guess because my soil has a lot of clay in it. When it rains hard my foot sinks into quite a bit!
We just more it with a lawn mower.
I have less failure if I leave them in the canner to cool.

Yes. They are softer and have a different texture than fresh. I personally like them better after they have been canned.

I do the same plant 3 seeds, never had any problems
Thanks. My dad gave pretty good advice! Appreciate y’all watching.
Great video! I wish your camera was better though... please upgrade and do more!
Do you ever grow a Fall bean they have large beans in it and come in late august?
I planned mine heavy also. No adding anything!!!

Love the video!! where did you get the propane stove you did you canning on? I sure like that set up.

Absolutely! Go ahead and eat those or try recanning them in another run. Good luck!!
What is the cost (of seed) to value (sale price) on the total harvest? Note that I mean actual total, not just the bushel and a half shown. Thanks!
I'm completely confused right now! My mother and grandmother always taught me to NOT tighten the lids before going in the canner. How does the air escape when you do that??
Yeah it did look like their lids where tightened too much but it worked, I tend to just lightly tighten the lids...fingertip tight only!

@@SheratonParkFarms thank you for getting back to me so soon. Best of luck in your next growing season.
Is that the turkey fryer setup you're heating with?
Yes. Works great once you get out dialed in.
@@SheratonParkFarms I was thinking it would work pretty well for heat consistency. Might have to try that this year. Thanks for the reply.
What brand of canner do you use? It looks heavy duty..
It’s an All American. Not sure where Saundra bought the first one but found the second one on Craigslist.
That’s a nice gerstner you got… wouldn’t leave it outside
Are these grocery store green beans?
Yep. Got the right beside the chicken, pork and eggs wet but at the grocery. 🤣
I guess I let my green beans go too long. They don’t look skinny like yours. Mine are fat and lumpy :(

You keep saying breaking and it's called snapping
bean breaking
A social gathering at which bean pods are broken into short lengths for drying or canning.
There's more than one term for it
