Ok, I have seen this argument flung around a couple times, so I feel the need to say something: Lets not get on the level of reality deprivation of some localizers. At least(!) half the jokes in japanese media is simple sexism. If you have been to Japan, a statement like yours would not be possible (yes, I lived, studied and worked in Japan). It is the culture and you may like or not like it, thats up to the individual. Sexism as it is, is viewd different in Japan than the societal west - its not exactly positive, but it is not comparable to Europe and north america.
However, its not the job of anyone but the media producers in Japan to change this and it should not happen on the basis of some overly loud people that dont even play those games in the first place.
Please just keep the argument and the discussion real and not slide into absurdity like the vocal a-hats.

@@Randleray Yes, and? Who cares. Sorry, when you have a problem with that - don't consume anime or japanese media. And you wanna know an even more crazy truth about japanese media? The most sexist stuff comes from WOMEN! Not from men. Because also in Japan men often don't have the courage for it - but a woman can get scarve-free. And many of them are proud of their jobs. Do you think the seiyuus who voices visual novels with much moaning are ashamed? No they aren't. Do you think Mami Kawada or KOTOKO were ashamed about the games they sang the openings for? No, they weren't. In fact, many of them demanded these jobs. Because imagine that: Also women can be huge perverts - and unlike in western culture they are allowed to be it in Japanese culture, as long as they don't sell themselves on the street.

Pom pixelation is essentailly a labor rights issue and market manipulation, the unionized actors don't want uncensored genitals in because that would push the common denominator and standard. It's the same in construction, if you dont HAVE to wear hard hats, every building is just built as cheap as they can without investment into safety gear.
Drawn pom competes with live-action and it has been shown that if you allow certain things, they will just dodge the issue with something like tentacles going after 8-year-olds.

That is why people love Japanese stuff so much, because of the Japanese culture they are interested in. If they want US stuff, they should not get them from Japan, nor force other countries into making them as the said stuff is already available in the US. Nobody goes to a Chinese restaurant for hamburgers as he would go there for Chinese food instead. People also support accurate language translating to ensure the intent is the same in a different language, and sex dimorphism is the acceptable realism in fantasy as the characters are still fictional. to be fair- you go to a chinese restaurant for 'americanized' chinese food, which is changed to be more appealing to a 'western' audience, while still holding respect for the actual history behind the food- most restaurants don't carry the more 'controversial' parts of their cuisine, you won't typically find dog on the menu, your meal won't include pig's feet, sheep's p*nis, Stinky Tofu, or virgin boy eggs.
this however, is different from Localizations, because they are cutting out the parts they know will not sell, or are simply illegal in the area- they are not trying to convince you that what you *really* want is Kung Pao impossible chicken, sweet and sour beyond meat pork, and cruelty free wonton soup, which is essentially what localizers do- they take out what makes something authentic to make it more palatable to themselves alone, disregarding how it hurts the dish itself.

You would realize that financially, we have already lost to the elites, and they are already set to translate their wealth into power so whatever remaining wealth they have will never be taken away from them, and they might have achieved 50-75% of that goal.. That Japan Times article, which discusses Bandai Namco's localisation, still keeps making headlines. One needs to be reminded that Bandai Namco has been listed on the ESG Index for quite a few years now. This isn't surprising, but it's sad nonetheless. Bandai Namco will have to learn the hard way. Does anybody remember the logo change a couple of years ago, where Bandai Namco admitted that they're commiting to ESG? Woke localisers are the low level henchmen of these ESG investors. Sega will learn the hard way, too.
Despite being of two minds here in regards to A.I., I can't wait for the day these woke localisers get fired and blacklisted from the entire Japanese entertainment industry. These localisers had it coming and I enjoy seeing them squirm and cry, as translations will be less contaminated with western woke ideology. However, the quality of translations will (temporarily) dip, as they will partially lack a certain human touch. There's also a danger that certain (political) biases can also be programmed and integrated into A.I.. Model professional translators can definitely use A.I. as an additional tool to assist them. It's a double-edge sword. Maybe publishers and foreign distributors need to hire Japanese natives who are good to fluent in various foreign languages. Of course, these Japanese native translators would need to be trained and vetted, in order to perform for and represent theses publishers and foreign distributors like model professionals. Translators in the mould of Studio Khara's Dan Kanemitsu or similar come to mind. But I digress.
It’s time to return to the days where translations were never done during the development or production of certain products, but to do translations after the completion of the original (Japanese language) version as it was the way things were done in the past. The tried, tested and successfully proven. Translating Japanese I.P.s under Japanese norms never ever hurt or harmed foreign or domestic users, customers, etc. in any way, due to historical, religious or cultural differences. The Japanese historical, religious or cultural differences are what made and still make Japanese I.P.s successful in the first place. Domestic audiences and fanbases are the lifeblood of every successful I.P.. Foreign audiences and fanbases are a bonus though.
This global / modern audience these wokies talk about doesn't exist, due to audiences never ever being a monolith. Additionally, this moral abstinence wokies love to preach is a hoax, as all they do is classic projection, gaslighting, crybullying and tokenism, which is the bigotry of low expectations and internalised and externalised istophobia of the highest order. Wokies are the embodiment of anti-marketing. This toning down of sexiness of characters is also uncalled for. It's obvious that sexiness always sells and that fan service is customer service, always.
As for those so-called "Global Standards", they aren't what they claim to be. All they are doing is refering to generic lowest common denominator nonsense. I would call such mediocrity "Wooden Spoon Standards". During the 1980s and 1990s, developers and producers had way more creative freedom. This "Wild West" during the 1980s and 1990s were and still are the real global standards. Having full creative freedom and completely ignoring so-called "sensibilities" is the real Global Standard and thus the benchmark and an infinitely growing pinnacle of excellence. Why? Because developers and producers during the 1980s and 1990s were in constant competition with one another. This competition of ideas only encourages people to strive to evolve and better oneself. Again, striving for excellence in quality, creativity, evolution, satisfying cumtomers and fans, etc. is the real Global Standard.
Foreign fans of Japanese I.P.s want translations to be faithful to the original with the creator’s original vision intact, uncut, unedited and uncensored. The same thing goes for the Japanese historical, religious or cultural differences that are included and embedded. That’s what also makes Japanese I.P.s stand out.
This xenophobia and racism against Japan needs to stop. It's time that this ESG Ponzi Scheme gets exposed for what it is.

They won't. Japan has followed all western trends, it just takes a lot longer for it to happen. It was only a matter of time after anime and manga skyrocketed in popularity outside of Japan. Because Japanese culture is very adherent to institutions, they are especially susceptible to influence by corporations in the West that translate or distribute their games outside of Japan, and they also are heavily influenced by western news outlets, reviewers, blogs, and so on. And because westerners want those games, even if they've been mistranslated or Americanized, they sell well, well enough for those Japanese execs to believe that what the West is doing is a good thing. Expect Japan to turn into a hyper-microcosm of what has happened in the west in the coming years, probably just in time for the West to fully escape that poison, and Japan's culture and products will fall into decline. What needs to happen is boycotts!
Sadly US/English mainstream media endorses this behavior because they too suffer from brain rot, so you won't see them reporting on this as vigilantly as they should hence casual gamers don't know what has been changed.
Compare that to what German games media did 20-30 years ago when games were censored for the German market, a game being censored was always being brought up and talked about extensively. The result was people not buying or importing US/UK versions instead and it hurt sales so much that some games skipped the German market entirely and on the flip side publishers were happy about advertising an uncensored product when it got through the ratings.

It was literally like a week ago that someone said that my point that the AI translations wouldn't solve anything because the people curating them would be just as likely to be woke and was told, "No, it's fine because they can do the AI in Japan" and I elaborated. I said, "If Crunchyroll or whatever big company in charge of distribution to the West demands they greenlight the translation it'd be more practical to put the current localizers ruining translations in charge of that."
It's cynical but the fans only have so much sway. A lot of companies are too small to publish overseas so they'll license their property out to a company like NISA or XSeed and will generally have to play ball. The ones that are big enough to have overseas publishing networks don't care. To put it bluntly, in order for it to have an impact the cost of lost sales due to boycotting need to surpass the impact that would be had If a large distributor refuses to release a project they don't have control over, and I don't think that such a thing WILL happen. And for shareholders there will be the defense who insist that it has nothing to do with the translation and is entirely due to something like "bad marketing."

Japanese games and anime are popular not only because they have distinctly Japanese things, but also because it does stuff western media doesn't. There's actually a lot of Japanese games and media which are doing character tropes and plots that Hollywood used to do in the 1950s-1990s. But Hollywood have deemed those things bad and cancelled them. So of course if someone wants to have something like the old Batman cartoon or a movie like Back to the Future, Hollywood isn't making anything like that anymore. But you can find an anime or video game equivalent.
The issue is, the localizers are part of (or trying to get into) the Hollywood crowd. And so they tow the Hollywood line, censoring and sabotaging Japanese media to "bring it in line with western values." Basically, localization is a form of control. It has been since the 1980s and before. They just are finally being called out on it because we have the internet and we can look up what's been altered. Back in the 1980s and 90s, it was a lot harder to find the original version and learn what was altered so they had more control over it.

At some cases, you can even contact the developer and be like 'Hey, I want to change this little visual aspect so it works better for their culture.' So, you have a little bit more control over what the player is going to experience..."_*
Let me ask a question. Why do people like the "Yakuza" games? It is *_because_* of how overtly Japanese they are. It is something could never be developed on western shores and is not like anything western audiences have grown accustomed to for many years. And if you so much as inject political messages into it, then you just lost all of your loyal, diehard fans who loved how unique the game was.

That's exactly why I think AI is the only way out. The core problem lies at the corporations who produce the IP, not just the localizers. They only ever saw the backlashes online and thought this is exactly what users want while it could be very far from the truth. If people can run good enough machine translations locally that, with AI, can even understand nuances, it acts as checks and balances to those corporations and localizers and force them to react, while also reaching coverage beyond typical fan translations.

you say that, but I bet people could make a mod pack that alters the voice lines to fit a more original source material for games using AI voice overs for those parts (as well as text). For example; a game from the edo period comes out and the wokelizers/corpwokes add in political pandering, an AI mod pack could theoretically alter the dialogue to fit within that time period, and stay consistent (given the human modder assists in this re-writing) throughout the story, effectively changing the story to fit that time period and the general concept of the game.

What's even more ironic is that 4kids at least had the excuse of appealing (albeit in an out-of-touch fashion) towards..... well, it's in their name. In contrast, these current year localizers are working with media most commonly aimed at teens and young adults, people who should be mature enough to handle extreme content (and if they can't, they should also be mature enough to simply choose not to watch). But nope, certain types of content have to be toned down because they, the localizers, say so, and they, the localizers, just arbitrarily think that you, the audience, are incapable of handling the very same type of content that the original Japanese audience were able to handle just fine.

One thing to consider is the Japanese mindset. This is a collectivist society, at least socially.
The localizers have a pre-established relationship and in Japan they seek to please and expect these activists to be of a like minded mindset.
Here's the thing, if you see something you don't like.
    1. Contact the original dev or publisher directly, tell them your complaint, be very clear as it is going to a person that doesn't speak your language.
    2. Boycott the manga or game, permanently. It takes time to make a dent this way. So for example, you're paying for CR subscription, mot only do you cancel the subscription nut you also don't watch with ads earlier
