  • Cottonwood Area and Fisherman’s point was none stop action. With school out for Veterans Day, we decided to take the kids for a morning run at San Luis Reservoir.
We got to the lake around 8am and started trolling by the small dam in Cottonwood bay. There were several boats and shore anglers before we got there (I guess people do read my reports 😬). So, I stuck to the outskirt in 60’ of water. Trolling the Tackle Builders Atlas Rigs, it was back to back hookups. As soon as we’d hookup, I’d hand the rod to the kids and I’m already setting up another rod and dropping the Atlas Rig to the right depth. So we’d have our rigs in the target zone at all time.
We had several singles with a few doubles in the mix but always a hookup or two on each pass. It wore the kids out fast with 15 fish in an hour. So I took them back to the RV to stay with mom.
I had a few hours left before heading back so I explored the west side of the lake before Lone Oak Bay but not much going on there. Then I hit the Basalt area and just like the Cottonwood area, it was back to back hookups. Crazy action.
I trolled the Atlas Rigs in front of Fisherman’s Point and stayed 10-20’ off the bottom. Stripers would come up to check out the rigs and chase the umbrella rigs. Each school you’ll get a strike or hookup. There were also several boaters in the area but they were only targeting the shallows. Didn’t see any pull up fish.
We ended the day by noon with 30+ stripers to 22”. Didn’t really matter what color Atlas Rigs, you just need to be at the right depth and they’ll come up to check out the rigs. Talked to several boaters at the ramp before heading home and most said they either skunked or had a slow day.
Now you know FAm. Go get em!

Nice I was at the launch when you set your bout off with trolling motor. Very slow for us fishing minnows and top water. How fast do you troll with the rigs?

When the wind starts howling at San Luis, it’s like ocean fishing.
