As a man who just built my off grid home in San Felipe, Baja, you continue to be an inspiration. I'm learning the ropes of solar management, water management and am about to launch into gardening. Being 100% off grid and debt free is a feeling very few people will ever know. I know I don't have to tell you, but it's amazing. Thanks for your great channel. Adorable dogs btw.... 🙂
I have not traveled to Mexico in over ten years as we are told its become to dangerous, after watching your channel I suspect it's much safer than the media tells us. I miss the slower pace of life and the friendly people there and the beautiful beaches.
I can honestly say that I feel as safe here as I did in Canada, and in some ways, I feel even safer! Thank you for allowing me to shift your perspective a little bit. The slower pace of life, friendly people & beautiful beaches are definitely all here & all as beautiful as ever.
Veda, you share so much wonderful information. I thought I would share with you. I have been following an amazing organic gardener who lives in Australia. Morag Gamble. She also gardens with very hot dry conditions. I hope you can take a look at her videos. She has an easy way of preparing areas for planting, using newspapers and straw to conserve moisture loss and amend the soil. I appreciate you so much and wanted to share some goodness with you. Brenda in Oregon ❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much for your kind words Brenda, and thank you for thinking of me, I'll definitely check her out. I'm going to do another gardening video soon, hopefully I can incorporate some of her tips in it. 💖
Congratulations for making the move! I wish you the best in your endeavors. I'm available for consulting if need be, although depending where you are I'm not sure how helpful I'll be able to be. You know where to find me in any event, cheers!
Another thing we did for our rooftop tinaco was build an enclosure around/above it, to protect it from high winds (after we had a half full tinaco blown off the roof) and from UV rays which, as you know, are brutal for plastic.
I like your property! You have created a beautiful comfortable home. Try to use mulch in your flower beds and all your trees. Doing this you probably only have to water once weekly. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for tuning in, and for sharing the reminder of the importance of mulch! I've used it, but as you know it sort of disintegrates over time & needs to be replaced. I'll get on that sooner than later, thanks!
Awesome video as usual! I felt like it was to short! Lol Seriously I didn't want it to end! Love what you are doing my Sky Lady! High point for me was you saving water and this goes way back to my grandmother's house that saved all the Grey water, bath, washing, ect,to water the yard, plants. Thanks again for sharing!!
We have both a 10,000 L cistern (completely underground) and a 55,000 L cistern (partially underground) made of solid volcanic rock, as we live in an earthquake-prone zone south of Mexico City, and cinder block cisterns are more likely to develop small cracks which will then leak. We do clean the cisterns regularly, so we know there are no rotting iguanas in them! 😅 The metal cover is big enough for a person to go down into the cistern, and clean out any buildup of mud and debris (passing buckets to someone up top). We also collect the rainwater from our rooftops and upper floor terraces into our large cistern. The first rains of the season go into a barrel (as they will have the build up of dust from the dry season), then it switches to going into the cistern. But before going into the cistern, it’s filtered through a small tinaco with “tezontle” (another kind of small volcanic rock abundant in our region). Then it goes through another in-line washable filter, and finally into the cistern. We’re going to build one more cistern, because our goal is to have the rainwater be enough to get us through the dry season. Currently we still have to buy a few “pipas de agua” (water truck), although we only pay the equivalent of US$45/10,000 L, compared to your $75! We also reuse our grey water for watering.
I feel living in Baja Mexico off-grid you get freedom & security of self-sufficiency and connection with nature and the environment The value of independence A simpler, more fulfilling lifestyle you always make great videos A++ I hope you speak a little bit of Spanish on your next video that will be very cool hasta luego Amiga 😎
I have been meaning to throw in a little Spanish si!! Then I start recording & totally forget lol, it will happen though. I'm about 5 minutes from the beach. They're lovely yes, with whales & sea turtles and all. Not the softest sand, and not all of them are swimmable but it's all good of course!
I totally enjoyed your video and very informative Since you have hot and humid summers, you may want to check into solar powered systems that absorb water from air and give you purified water.
That's funny, I had to go out and look in our underground tinaca after watching this. There is a steel trap door on top that I could climb in or out of, periodically I lean over and look down in there with a headlamp. It's got some leaf debris and dirt in there but I don't see any mold or algae. I believe the blue sealant paint in there is some kind of anti microbial. I know that a few years ago I was trying to fish a scorpion out from under the trap door without getting stung and it fell into a full tank and crawled on the bottom until it drowned, oh well! We don't drink the water but I'm pretty sure we could, it's good well water and far superior to the city water here which is brackish, awful to bathe with and ruins your plumbing fixtures. We rinse with it when brushing our teeth and no problema. It's 12,000 liters, when I get it filled I usually throw a cup or two of Cloralex bleach into it.
I love that you went out & checked your own situation lol, that's great. A trap door that you can peak into is a good idea. I threw bleach in my last delivery of water but realized after a bit it was bleaching my hair, and since the sun's already doing that every day I didn't want any more of that, so now I've switched to get half deliveries, just 5000L, so the water turns over more often, requiring less treatment, or at least that's my thinking & my hope. I confess I don't know where my trucked water comes from. Next delivery I'm going to find out! Good call with the anti microbial paint too, was that pool paint do you think?
I am so very impressed with your knowledge and am curious if you are some kind of engineer? My husband is and his mind works like yours is why I asked. Also, what are those supplements on your kitchen counter? And are you vegetarian? Your way of living is such an inspiration. Love your respect for the land & nature. Merry Christmas to you!

Surprisingly they don't seem to be. I've never seen one anyway, maybe they're super stealthy, hard to say.
