The last climb is called the Schaffer Trail, it was built back in the 40's&50"s as the area around Moab is rich in Uranium. My friends uncle built the road. Most of the backcountry roads in the area were for Uranium mining and exploration. Lots of great native American history in the area also. Good Fun! Thanks Connor & Ian. Cheers!
Originally a livestock trail I think. We went down that in a 2wd rental car when my wife "navigated" on a vacation. Got extra scary when we had to pass someone going up hill!
I unexpectedly lost my Father two weeks ago. He was British, but immigrated from the London area to the Moab area as a teenager. He loved the geology and how different it was than the UK. Seeing your reactions to the majesty of the landscape made me feel like I got a glimpse of what it would have been like for him. That felt extremely meaningful and perfectly timed, thanks for sharing!
Being from Utah this was fun to watch. I have been ridding all over this area for 35 years. The camera does not capture how spectacular it really is. That last climb is truly a grind. I have done it multiple times. First rule is never go off road in the rain. The mud is worse than anything you have ever experienced. The first day I thought oh no dont go.
Incredible place!! I was truly blown away. Would LOVE to come back and explore for longer. Hope we did your local loops justice! Thanks for watching, Conor 😊
Also a Utahn bikepacker! I thought they were doing the full kokopelli route on gravel bikes in the mud and was convinced they wouldn’t make it. Luckily it seems they did a modified gravel route and it looked like a blast!
Never change your idea of a good time, Conor. The wildest stories and the best adventures come from getting into situations you wouldn't want to be in, but then getting out of them in fair condition. I'd go on a crazy ride with you any day.
I absolutely LOVE fat tire bike cycling and bike packing in the Idaho's Arco Desert, which is very similar but less people. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO CONNOR!
That desert peanut butter mud is making me nostalgic for desert cycling. Thank you very much GCN! YES, getting double digit speed, even in kilometers per hour, sometimes felt crazy fast on desert rides. I deeply appreciate this video.
Don't know if RUclips offers a type of BAFTA or ACADEMY award for presentations, but if they did, this would absolutely be a winner. I'll be watching this over and over again for some time. Thanks, GCN, Conor and Ian.
@@conordunne1 Agree, the edit of this "episode" has a different feel than other gcn production. Not complaining about earlier edits, but this was more cinematic
Shaffer Canyon climb is truly majestic! I did the White Rim Trail a couple of years ago and having to ride up Shaffer at the end of an already grueling day was one of the most challenging and rewarding cycling experiences of my life. Well done!
I'm a Utah resident and an employee for one of the US Public Land Services. Not only was I happy to see places that I've thoroughly enjoyed riding in, but I was very happy to be able to tell that y'all obeyed the law and didn't take any drone footage in Canyonlands National Park. It's a shame you couldn't get an exemption. Drone footage on White Rim's Schafer Climb would really show how unreal that climb is.
Connor and Ian. so great that you enjoyed Utah--my home state after I first visited Moab 35 years ago! I know some of the roads you traveled and your response to seeing that amazing terrain is so much like mine after my first trip--"another planet" is as close as words can capture it. Bummer about the rain, which of course is rare in that part of the world, but you both handled it very and then got the big payoff of those Utah sunny skies. This is an amazing place to live! Thanks again for sharing your adventure.
Another Utah local commenting here :). So cool to see some of the incredible country getting some screen time. I hope Conner was able to go visit Arches National Park as well while he was in the area. Also, Dead Horse Point State Park has some pretty fun mountain bike trails right by the visitor center, for anyone who is thinking of checking it out. Lastly, it's really true that a camera falls so short of capturing what it's like in that red cliff country. It takes my breath away every time I visit. I'm glad Connor got to experience it and share it with GCN viewers.
I crossed through this region on a mountain bike trip. I'd ride the local trails for a couple of days and go to the next town by car. The beauty just blew me away. I never expected the desert to be cinematographic. Dead Horse Point is jaw dropping. The best bike trip of my life.
I took the train out and hiked Zion, Canyonlands, Black Canyon of the Gunnison and more again last year. Loved it! What Mother Nature and Father Time have made!
First Arizona now Utah. Thank you GCN for showcasing the some of best that the United States has to offer. Our land is vast and varied. The birthplace of protected land (Teddy Roosevelt established the national parks as a way to enjoy and untouch the land) which is now globally recognized and adopted. Keep coming back to the USA we love that our country being showcased!
Love seeing the West Slope and Utah Canyon country get some recognition! The cycling out here is the best of any place I've ever lived. I think I'm here for life.
Conor picking the most appropriate bike brand name for this trip did not go unnoticed by me. It's the small details. But wow, what a place to ride. Another GCN filming masterpiece.
And thanks to Iam Boswell for reminding me that I do have at least one thing in common with a Tour de France winner - I can't ride no-handed very well either.
Unreal to have Connor on his long adventures like the days of GCN+. Really well done footage and great production. These videos every so often are really an upgrade to the channel on RUclips. We know they are hard to make and can’t do it often, but keep them coming regularly.
Very much like a GCN+ doc and I love it! I asked Conor what was his favorite place to film was, during the Wednesday group ride recently, and he said this trip. I can really see why.
Okay so how on Earth are you going to top this next year. What an epic ride. It could have been a longer video. I could have sat through another hour of this. Loved it.
As a native of Utah, I get down to Moab fairly often and always go with the full-suspension mountain bike but maybe a gravel biking trip should be the next adventure. But I think I will skip the clay mud; unforgiving stuff. The Wahoo Elemnt Ace head unit seems like an invaluable tool for a long and remote ride like that. Thank you for another great GCN video. Utah Rocks! Please come again!
This is incredible! Such a banger, and the bromance is so strong here. What an incredible trip to do with your mate, totally chill and mature vibes. You guys are the best !
As we say here in Utah - BeaUTAHful!! Epic adventure! I’ve done parts of it many times and always a blast! Well, except the concrete/clay/mud that is exactly how Ian described it! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this. As a Colorado cyclist, this really made my heart warm. You guys did great pushing through the rough stuff. Glad you didn't get any bad lightning or hail.
I've done the Kokapelli Trail on my mountain bike and done many vacations to Colorado/Utah. The scenery is truly amazing. Well done on the cinematography, which seriously rivals that of the old John Wayne movies.
Stunning. Epic. All those sorts of words apply. Especially if it doesn't rain. Nice to see this side of Ian Boswell. Conor certainly can plan a dramatic ride. I'm a fan of him, and especially his tribute bike he rode at Dirty K because I had Specialized Rock Combo in the day. Well done, lads.
I was just thinking after his last video that I'd love to see Conor on another of these trips. What great timing. Edit: What an absolute masterpiece of a video. It really made me yearn for a trip like that from somewhere deep inside. I always feel that memories can never be captured better than your own eyes, but you guys did an absolute banger of a job capturing yours and sharing it. One day I'd love to do a trip like that.
Thank you - that's super cool to hear!! Watching this back made me want to go riding with a tent too!!! Love rides like this! Cheers for watching Conor
These are my favorite GCN videos. This one in particular is great, being from New Mexico its sick watching Conor experience the terrain that I ride all the time.
Thanks Conor , Ian , and crew ! Yes , it's a beautiful place ! I've done one ride out there , and I am planning more . The problem I had was water !! Be well , thanks again , safe travels home
Yep! Always carry more water than you think you need. Enjoy drinking water you brought with you at the finish line than risk dehydration, which has been fatal to some mountain bikers in rides like that in the Southwest.
Welcome to Utah! It was fun seeing roads I’ve ridden or drove on with my family! I’m glad you had a great time! Keep doing bikepacking trips! I really enjoy them, because I would like to do them soon. Cheers

Wow, it seems like a great trip! Anytime you can ride out in the far West of the country, it is definitely a blessing. Probably MUCH better than riding on the eastern side of the Mississippi.
Loved watching you guys struggle. We had MTB's this past year and it was dry but still tough. You guys doing it fully loaded just shows you are the real deal, as most of us already know. Great video.
I’m so glad that you made the trip to our great western desert mountains! The lure of these beautiful places has endured throughout the years, and I moved back to the mountains of west Texas in 2007: one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
