"'Bones' is a song that attempts to move from the death of the past into a brighter future. When we recorded this song, we were chasing a feeling- we wanted to capture the audio version of what a dream would sound like. For the music video we had the same aim. Driving my friend's old ‘47 Ford Ranch Wagon down the deserted streets of my hometown in the middle of the night was surreal. Dreamlike. I found myself transported back to the same blurry eyed heartache that inspired the song." - Jon Foreman

We met the bones of us in our old backyard... I believe he is talking about going back to the past and the "us" is him and his younger self. He really didn't dig up bones in a literal sense, but just basically digging up the memories of his past. He's trying to figure out this war within him and what he's fighting for. Then he figures out that he's really fighting for himself but most of all, fighting for his younger self. The clock keeps moving forward but he's still living in the past as he sees himself smiling back at him from old photographs. How innocent he was back then before this war started, before he became who he is today.
He's fighting against his own memories, the bones of his past. He's fighting for his younger self and the love he has for his younger self.
That's what this song means to me.
My whole life I have fought for my younger self and have been fighting a gruesome war, trying to figure out what I've been fighting for.

This is beautiful and honestly I think it is what this song is about. At first I thought it might be about a relationship (and perhaps maybe part of it could be) but I think this battle with the self makes the most sense and would be in true Switchfoot fashion.

Cried watching this. I can so relate. Just returned from a funeral where I didn't want to go because I didn't want to see some of the people. Turned out to be a healing moment. Now I want to reconcile with some people I threw away. So good.

This song the words hit close to me.. 2015 was the last time I saw my son my grandkids.. We had words and I left slamming the door.. I still haven’t seen him my grandkids. Wow I got tears in my eyes 🥺 they say you grow out of the music you liked when you were younger but my appreciation for their art has only grown with time. This song is so lovely, and the music video really captures the day dream they were after. Exquisite.
I'm thinking the car is a Ford product of the 1957-1959 vintage.
Such a deep song, like all of Jon Foreman's songs, an artistic, acoustically wonderful, and profoundly deep.
