- Mantra is a snare and Ableton live loop performed by Andrew Eldridge.
Listen with headphones or a great set of speakers for best audio.
Doug Bush is one of the most respected percussion teachers/artists in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex area. I commissioned him to write a snare drum solo in 2019 because of the way Doug’s writing blends both the traditional rudimental and modern concert styles into a unique and fresh approach to performance. Doug’s musical interests are also quite similar to mine. We both love electronic music and are passionate about finger drumming styles through midi controllers. After the premiere of the first snare solo, I knew without a doubt Doug could compose a unique solo that blends his approach to the snare drum with live looping. After a few calls, we officially set this specific commission in stone in May 2020.
He sent me the piece in November 2020. The folders contained 18 individual samples that I loaded into an Ableton drum rack. Only four of the samples are played into a loop. The remaining 14 samples are all played individually at specific times in the music. When I could devote more of my time to it, I sent him a proof-of-concept video in January 2021 that showed the piece was possible in Ableton. I know Doug plans to release this in two forms: one as an audio track accompaniment and the second with the individual samples so others can recreate the live loop aspect.
“Mantra” was given the official world premiere on my faculty percussion recital at the University of Texas at Arlington on 2 March 2021. I was so happy to have Doug in attendance at the event.
I hope you enjoy!

Doug writes, “Mantra was inspired by a wide range of interests converging together to make one cohesive experience. Influences range from Tigran Hamasyan to Venetian Snares to Jojo Mayer to Esoteric Mantra Buddhism.
The form of the piece is intended to simulate a session of meditation. The opening rhythmic motif in groupings of eleven represents the consistent breathing patterns in the first stages of meditation. The middle of the piece departs from the rigid pattern-based structure and allows for a flow of dynamically expressive and varied rhythmic ideas to represent the deepest state of meditation. In the conclusion, the open ideas slowly become more structured returning to familiar rhythmic motifs with a new perspective. Like in meditation the goal is to end more enlightened than we began.”
