Don't try to slam the tail in as soon as you touch down. Being a low wing taildragger, you want to keep the tail flying, so you maintain rudder authority, because as you lower it, the fuselage and wings will obscure it. Then, as you are stable on the centerline, slowly set the tail down and use a bit of differntial braking to keep centered.

    • @AvAngel

you can land it both ways... on wheel, and 3 point, admittedly i forced it down a bit there with limted runway.

Graceful, poise and elegance. As good as the Beaver? Apples and oranges... I love the Beaver and I love the Dak for different reasons. The DC-3 delivers on what she is, a lovely old transport. From start to shutdown and all points in between one 'manages' the aircraft. A vintage experience. I take your point about the texturing but I can live with that. Oh and the take off trim. I have one gripe - the default pilot view is exactly in the wrong place. Wonderful review as ever xxx

Almost all the RUclipsrs had the DC3 run amok on touchdown. For me too! However, after much trial and error, I found reducing the propeller to idle as it touches down helps a lot. So on touchdown, prop idle, throttle idle then pulsing the brakes to prevent tipover. Im not sure if its 'standard procedure', but it definitely works on this model.

I was hoping you'd review the DC3. I always learn from your videos. It certainly takes some practice to successfully fly this thing. If you get too slow at low altitude you're finished! Stalls are absolutely brutal with no hope of recovery (for me at least). I do like it a lot though, once you've managed to get into the air and get a good feel for it its really nice to fly. I'm still working on my bouncy landings, and now that you've shown how its done I can't wait to get back at it. Thanks for being there for me :)

Another bangin' video, Thumbs up given. I wish youtube would add a "Loved" button instead of just the Like and Dislike. One note, my Dad is a former DC3 driver (3500+ hrs) and he always preached that you never (emphasis on the NEVER) 3 point land a real world DC3, the tail wheel was not designed to take it.

Perhaps more importantly than the strength of the tailwheel is at that angle of attack the tail/rudder effectively becomes blanked out by the wing and you'll lose rudder authority. There are a few real life videos available of DC3 crashes because of this phenomenon.

Retrofit??? My whole world view just came crashing down around me. I thought that you of all people, having clearly been a 1930's Alaskan mail pilot in a past life, would've gone for the classic 😂
If you have separate throttle controls (and pedals) you should set the tailwheel steering angle to 180 (castering) and taxi using differential brakes and thrust (and propwash over the rudder). I suppose at some point I'll want to fly again, but for now I'm having a blast just trying to taxi straight with crosswinds. My 6-lever setup has finally paid off.

    • @jasonwebb71

No, I don't believe there is one. On the Classic, the heading is set on the Sperry AP, and it seems like they replaced the Sperry in the Retrofit, but never added a modern HSI with a heading bug. Seems like a big oversight to me. I can use my mapped hat switch to set heading for the AP, but I have to guess what it's actually reading and just make tiny heading changes.

Failure to do so result in the wing lifting off first in ground effect - leaving the tail blanked off in disturbed air, loss of tail authority and a tip stall. see here -ruclips.net/user/shortsJq_CgAiuk7s . I can live with it though, as I love the DC-3 and it's the only option in MSFS, but both the Beech 18 and Boeing 247 have much better cockpits. They set the standard that I was hoping to see with this DC-3.

You don't start the engine with the mixer full. You'll damage or start an engine fire. You leave it low and once you start the engine, look down, and the mixer will be moved up automatically. I'm not a pilot but another youtube reviewer was corrected by a real DC-3 pilot. Also, check your weight balance before start. It's not balanced so I correct this before I fly. It's a challenge to fly and especially after takeoff as I flipped it many times before I figured it out.

(We did have 30 ft of flames forward from the Carbi one day when the Capt put the mixture forward early - kept turning & all OK)
Your right with taxing - to make a turn, tail wheel lock off, some outside engine & brakes if needed & half way through the turn close the throttle & apply inside turn engine to stop the turn then tail wheel lock on.
On T/off - T/o power -82 kts (V2) lift off & g ear up (2 levers - the Spade lock near Cpt seat & gear handle up F/o side - METO power - 300 ft Climb power.

      * The old Good approach good landing - bad approach bad landing applies to the DC3 & a bad landing in the real thing makes a really big bounce - I mentioned slight forward stick on touchdown if needed before.
( If you do a really bad landing & there are still Pax on board, walk down the Isle AFTER the Captain & point his way) :o)
      * Set-up a constant approach like you would in all Airline Aircraft on an ILS without going to fine pitch just leave the power holding around 90 kts (mph?) & back to V2 speed 82 kts, close the throttles & Prop Pitch full fine in case of go around with only a slight flair needed.

@@billolgaau Thanks for the reply would be very interested to know when you do try it because you should know if it's realistic or not.
I struggled to keep it on the runway after touch down despite full rudder inputs and tail wheel locked.

@@Lonsome1223Once you touched down on the main wheels you did have to use the Rudder if it was gusty but once the tail was down with Tail Lock in no problem.
All of us trainees came from single engine fixed gear aircraft in those days (When Pontius was a Pilot) & we had no problems flying it, was docile & apart from finding out where the ground was from the proverbial two story building - taxing was another story
I have found over the years with FSX & MSFS the Rudder for me always seems too sensitive.
I will get onto finishing setting up my controls today & get this thing flying (Classic model only without the modern stuff) with ctrl + E starts as published procedures are alien to me.

Just flew the Classic with mod for the first time today out of Coffs Harbour YCFS were I learnt to fly, instructed & flew in there with the DC3.
It was very good doing circuits, very impressed.
Steady approach with cruise Prop setting, 95 mph over the fence, close the throttle & then Pitch fine just before the slight flare.
Taxiing was another matter as the Rudder acts as "Nose Wheel Stearing" & independ Engines didn't make much difference.
(Forgive me if I repeat myself as I get lots of questions)

Nice for a new msfs narration voice, too many pansie, nerdy, lip smacking, mouthbreathing poodlewalkers. You speak very nice, a bit fast, but ya know your stuff. Thanks for this channel.

The cockpit-sound is unfortunatly not that good. The plane flies great but landing this thing is just totally unrealistic. No matter if you get gentle rudderinputs or short hard ones, in some cases it gets totally uncontrollable. I had the luck to fly such an old lady on the FO-Seat and we never gave so much rudderinputs during rollout even with a little crosswind. In the FS its totally crap as soon as you have 5+ kts crosswind. There is still some things to fix
