I have this track system, but I don't have the ability to remove the front trim so easily. It is wood trim that may even be behind the other parts of the window sill - all oak. The back is also trapped in aluminum framing. Are there other options in removing and replacing, without taking all of the trim off?

When you lock the shoe, the point of the "knife" should be turned toward the inside of the house. When you tilt the sash back into the closed position, this will unlock the knife lock shoe. You'll want to lower the shoes so that they sit a few inches from the bottom of the window. This will leave you enough space to install the sash.
