So passionate, and sensitive. At the same time soft and raw, but still authentic. Only MJ can do that. And that "HEAAAAAAART". One of the best vocal performances ever. Yet the very end was always my favorite.
"You Are Not Alone" was the first single ever to debut at #1 on billboard top 100. Getting these MJ tracks and being able to do something that many only dream of? I know it, you know it, and everybody watching knows it, YOU my friend are one lucky person!
I'm pretty speechless. I knew it was intricate, and a work of a bona fide musical genius. But the accuracy is crazy, despite it being basically a bunch of stacked live takes. Whoever produced this is the best there is. Wow. The ad libs alone are worth a Grammy😅.
The way he does the stack multi-vocal for the chorus is a clever wordplay as the song is called You are not alone but the verses is just the solo vocal. Plus according to R Kelly when he wrote it he couldn't believe how Michael made it so much better in reality and it taught him alot in songwriting and production.
not just Michael's genius but also his crew Bruce Swedien, Matt Forger and co. Best person to get great insites into the studio sessions and the arrangements is Brad Sundberg. Luv your vids . . The best voice in the world, not only because of the tones it uses, it's how it uses, I've never seen anything like it. There are many wonderful singers, but they should play like this with their voice, never seen, or heard rather. And there you can see that high note that comes and that I only use in that song, because of his style of music he only went up to that note that time, but we see that he could even more than what almost all his songs showed. It was born to change music, it's clear. King of Music, Thank you for this video. Songs of album invencible?
It's also great to hear how Michael has continued to develop vocally over the years. Amazing singer! There will be no more 2nd Michael Jackson!! Thank you Chris for keeping Michael's talent alive with your respectful videos!
So excited to see this! Wow you know he was special just by hearing his music but experiencing his genius with these isolated vocals is mind blowing. Adding in those percussive breaths and doubling others was surprising. Gives permission to be playful and creative with editing. Great job Chris 👏 Your childlike joy and wonderment adds so much to these videos too.
YANA is the reason I fell in love with Michael and his music back in 1995 ❤ This one and Earth Song were my absolute favorites. Tears come into my eyes whenever I hear these two. And now I can hear all the vocals separately and get to learn Michael's genius because of you. Thank you so much, Chris! 🙏🏻 Really appreciate your work! And to see your enthusiasm, just like a cute child giggling 😊 I love it! You made my day with this. ❤
Brilliant! Thanks for gifting us this MJ music in this context! Would love to see this done with his song Childhood. Another incredible vocal performance
It was R Kelly, the guy who sits in Jail☠️. But what interests me is the instrumental part at 3:45 of this masterpiece. To me it sounds like the entire universe opened to all of us
Michael's ad libs towards the end just take you to church. If you a Michael fan you know what am talking about. Oh and Michael has been know to nail a song on the first take so it wouldn't us.
It was so lovely to hear Micheal's voice range and how dynamic it is!. Would love to hear one of Micheals unrealease song as a multitracks e.g. Al capone. Always looking forward to the deep dives you do on Micheal. Keep them coming! 😊❤😊🎉🎉😊😊
a lot of it comes from vocal warmup and being free, then having the know how to blend, bend, and all those things with texture. Oh but wow, how similar his doubling is, how precise. Bruce Swedien, most peace be upon him, said he could even double his vibrato perfectly, so impressive to hear it in isolation. These harmonies are more gold than Liberian Girl, well maybe.
The present part of history is such a great time in mj career every song is different and has such a big sound, thank you Chris for giving me a even more deeper appreciation of how great he was in the studio.
Yes, I like the live Ben, mostly on Triumph tour. As for kid MJ singing, I have to lower the volume of my earphones, he had such power in his voice. My new favorite is Big Boy, 9 yrs old MJ.
My guess for the breathy-hiccupy track added separately is this: they cut it out first thinking they want a "clean cut" of the singing then MJ probably changed his mind and decided it belongs there to keep it raw and emotional so they edited it back. It's never been my favourite song but his performance is just excellent every time
@@samiam2003You can separate an artist from the person. Say what you want about R Kelly and his transgressions in his personal life but there isn't denying his insane talent as a songwriter and as an overall R&B artist.
Wow. This is SUCH a good song to break down and analyze. Chris seems super impressed by each part. It even feels good just hearing and appreciating the individual parts. Thank you!
I believe at that "big note" section, they removed those 2 background ad-libs " I am here with you " in the final mix. I dont recall hearing those 2 on the album. Love the out of breath reaction at the end of that note. Shows his human side :)
The sound that came out my mouth while listening to the climax of the song is something I'm not proud of but it just expresses how in awe I am by his exceptional vocal performance 😭😭. What a brilliant vocalist.
Really enjoy watching these vids… and this vocal arrangement in particular is a favorite of mine, especially the modulation part. Those vocals sound like a million dollars 💸💫 keep going sir Liepe. Thank you.
I actually think that those two long notes towards the end of the songs are the demo version vs. the final one. You don't hear this ‘off mix‘ of these two in the official public version, even when you listen to it closely. However, the demo version available here on youtube has that softer line finishing with ‘‘don't you believe in me‘‘ instead of the passionate, rough one. I heard one of his producers telling a story in an interview about how MJ was dissatisfied with this big, expressive line, so he just went there and re-sang it as a last step, when the song was all done. I believe they gave you the vocals of both: the demo + this final vocal line. That's why it's doubled there.
That's cool. This is the first time I've seen his and generally similar projects by top pop artists. So thank you very much for sharing this with us. It helps to rethink the approach to recording vocals.
I could listen to those ad libs at the end on loop! MJ was such a genius and his voice was heavenly ❤ Also, the MJ breakdowns are my favourite keep them coming!
This was amazing to watch/listen to! Thanks for going through each component. I never knew the amount of work that goes in to create this! Appreciate the time you took to walk through this!
Ho wow ! I've never listened to this song like this, without the instruments. Just the voices... Thanks for the video. Could you do one on the song “we've had enough” by Michael Jackson too please?
Hi Chris, I have a question, and that question is could you do an in-depth video about Michael Jackson as a vocalist that covers his entire career and wherein you highlight and discuss just how amazing he is as a vocalist? I'm asking because I've been watching your MJ videos for a long time and you seem to be one of the few who truly understands Michael as a vocalist and who doesn't downplay or have bias against him for not being an Aretha Franklin or Whitney Houston style singer/belter (in short, you smartly realize that there's more than one way to be a vocalist). Likewise, I'm also asking because I've seen people trying to downplay Michael's vocals quite a bit as of late and/or saying that he was only a good vocalist as a child. I love this video BTW!😄
That’s an old argument but I used to hear that too. I think people have been smartening up the last 5 or so years. Songs like Keep the Faith, Earth Song, We’ve had Enough and this one are really showing people he could SING.
omg, his voice unravels me in the most polite way possible.. but to the bone.. with no return. I think the reason for dividing the breathing rhythm track and the main track in some parts in this song is that he wanted the collision this time.. yes, as you said he usually does both of those things at the same time, but here the collision is created between the main voice being free in holding the notes.. and breathing track keeping punctuations and making the long notes to be more rhythmic..both exits in two channels at the same time, then colliding...the flow of the long notes swelling over the edges.. and the edges created with breathing track.. even though you almost can't tell the difference.. but it would be different if in this song he would do both at the same time.. the long flowy watery notes would not be able to spill over... as he would have to interupt them, if doing both in one track in one go.. now he can indulge in the long ones, drive them home gently and count on another layer holding the container for this water.. i do not know who's idea that was.... but.. who knows.. he was a master of details after all... more you disect him.. more you understand the intricacy of his musical brain.. i always remember how people working with him say he was always telling them to find new sounds.. i am sure he would treat his voice and how he could use it in the same manner.. him to himself: find me some new sounds Michael.. what can i twist and turn etc.. in my voice to get another type of sounding out if it..
