- In this video essay, I look at how the theatrical cut of "Rocky V" fails, the Director's Cut soars, and give you my own personal re-write of the movie, fleshing out the characters even further.
LET'S GET SLY TO SEE THIS VID!!!!!
1. Tweet @TheSlyStallone and include a link to this video! ( • Rocky V (1990) Ain't T... )
2. LET'S GET THE WORKPRINT/DIRECTOR'S CUT OF THIS FILM SOMEHOW RELEASED ON 4K BLU-RAY!
I keep coming back to this vid because your Rocky impressions. I get a good laugh every time. Spot on. Great stuff, man!
Hans Korn yes especially the Robert faces are Killin me. I love me some Sage Stallone but I am nearly soda out of my nose on his expressions! especially@11:02.his WTF face is Killin it
EXCELLENT tone in his voice when he does Rocky!! Spot on is right!
It's okay, Paulie.
I really love ALL his voices. His Rocky is great, but his ability to do supporting characters is funnier to me because you don't hear people doing those characters.
Where can I view the work print version?
his rocky voice is so accurate
One thing I like about Rocky V is that they made Rocky weaker, instead of adding an even stronger opponent.
It wouldn't make sense to have an opponent that is stronger than Ivan Drago.
So dragging him down to a lower level is brilliant.
Same thing in Rocky VI/Rocky Balboa.
He's old now and can't keep up with the new guys, but still gives it his all.
I couldn't take it seriously for losing all.his money. That ruined the immersion to me. Still doesn't make sense .
@greg garner yes. Look at Tyson
@Shannon Daniels yeah, seemed like the accountant was a crook that a real lawyer would have saved him. And why on earth would someone that rich not pay taxes or have his mortage paid.
bottom line is he fought in an alley people were expecting unboxing match nothing this guy mentioned would have made this piece of crap movie good or even that much more watchable. I watched a few pieces of the director's cut and to be perfectly honest with you I think it makes the movie kind of worse and some aspects and kind of better than others but the bottom line is rocking needed to be in the ring. people were expecting a boxing match instead they got this
Imagine if Gunn destroys drago for the world title after drago loses the eye of the tiger after his loss to Rocky. Then we would respect Gunn as a monster Mike Tyson type. Especially if mike Tyson was Tommy Gunn. I do like Tommy Morrison’s performance but getting Mike Tyson would be insane and gives a real life feel with his relationship with George Washington duke.
This guy's impressions are spot on. I planned to watch for 5 minutes and couldn't turn it off. He is 100% right on theatrical vs work print.
Other than his kid aging 10 years while rocky was in Russia, it was a good movie
rrrrramone ha ha, that’s a really good point, I’ve only just noticed that 😂😂
It's cause he wanted his actual so to play the part
He jumped ages between all the movies
@@Thunda1986 but the timeline between 5 and Rocky Balboa is different. its like real time. Yet He came straight straight from the USSR and his kid is now 14 ? And thats the least thing wrong with this movie
Did you not notice that he went to the Soviet Union and came back from a country called Russia?
Now I gotta watch the director's cut.
Not that I've been able to find.
It’s not as good as the theatrical. What’s everyone saying it’s better for?
Where can you find it?
@@richardmoores because its different
You got to think sly will let it out on Blu Ray one day
For me, Rocky V is one of the best movies in the franchise... Really deep and beautiful
you do drugs 😂
@@brandonvandine1695 Hi, it's me. I remember I did this comment trying to troll someone... FINALLY 4 years later it paid off, THANKS 😂
I really agree!!
I agree... 4 is my favorite; and then 5!!!
Rocky 5 is like sex. Even when it's bad, it's still pretty good.
That’s the best thing I read all year
Lol
And I cried after it
Curt Christensen I'm sorry you had to go through that.
we should lobby to get the work print out
11:32 best tommy gunn impression ever
I don't care what everyone says, I love Rocky V. I always have, and I always will.
S&S Pictures I Agree! Me too! I was a extra in rocky balboa
Why do you think Creed was fucking shit?
where/when?
+S&S wrote: *"I love Rocky V. I always have, and I always will"* - I have been telling people for years how good V was in comparison to its bottom-shelf status, and all of that without ever hearing about or viewing the working cut.
Same
The Mickey speech, Adrian and him in the dressing room post fight, When he gets the bad news in the doctors office, Adrians speech to him in the street and the song measure of a man. Not the best Rocky but i loved it all the same.
This vid should be called Rocky V workprint isnt that bad
Rocky V has by far the best acting of the five films in my opinion. I think a lot of people didn’t like it because it reverted back to the old formula of the first two movies where it wasn’t really about the fight, it was more about the characters. The film was highly character driven and the dialogue scenes were the true “fight scenes” throughout.
Your Rocky and Paulie impersonations got me ROFLMAO!! Spot on dude!! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Great synopsis btw; I totally agree that the alternative fight scene between Rocky and Tommy was way better. It’s noteworthy that Sly originally wrote that Rocky would die after the fight.
The Tommy one😅
I love this film. I always saw Tommy Gunn as Rocky's Bizarro.
+Jorel Blu so do i i don't understand why people hate it.
Tommy Gunn is basically evil Rocky
nuclear man
"How you doin Mick?" I got goosebumps too man.
I started screaming when he started jumping on Paulie lol. I always like Rocky V, came out when I was 10. I've been raising my son by myself since he was 8 months old. He is now 7 and I remember he wanted to see the Rocky statue at the Philadelphia Art Museum because he loves all 7 films. When we sat at the top of the Rocky steps that song by Elton John "Measure of a Man" played in my head as we just looked at the Philadelphia skyline. The movie and song is just symbolic to me and my relationship with my son and how the movie reflected Rocky's relationship to his son and how at the end you see them in the same spot bonding again with each other. Sly really showed us more then a boxing film with these epic movies.
I like that, man!
Sure, it is "more than boxing". Had it not been more than that, it couldn't have had this huge fan base for decades. Not that huge number of people are into boxing. There are so many other boxing movies, none this popular. Rocky saga is about determination, perseverance, fortitude, forbearance, morality. Now I'm even skipping fight scenes after watching them many times, but never get tired to watch the rest.
He's one of those people who doesn't understand that Paulie's one of those people who's never going to change. Rocky's just that good of a person that he would remain friends with the man, also he is his brother-in-law
These impressions are perfect 😂
Your impression of Duke has me rolling!! "Apollo proud"!!!
This is outstanding.
11:29 I'm crying, your impressions are hilarious! Excellent review, I've seen so many tidbits of the workprint version through various sources. I hope that one day it's easily obtainable.
Started watching the rocky films for the first time and I really don’t get the hate 5 gets. I felt it brought back the franchise down to it’s roots from the first two films. Plus it really showed what makes rocky such a great person and fighter as he could have easily have ended up like tommy if he cast aside and gave up on mickey and Adrian. I enjoy 5 more than 3 and 4 honestly.
Rocky Balboa brought the franchise back to its roots. Hopefully, you watched that one. You would see what I mean.
I like your analysis of all that! ... 4 is my favorite; and then 5!!!
Started watching the Director's cut of the film and so far I have to agree, just the first 10 minutes alone are way better than what we saw in theaters.
Where do u watch it?
Chris Stuckman brought me here.
well that makes us 2
Emg me 3
+Echo Does Things Make us 4
Ako din.
yup
First time I watched Rocky V about 8 years ago, I didn't understand all the hate it got. I thought it was pretty damn enjoyable! Then about 3 minutes into this video, I realised I've only ever seen the Director's Cut. I'm so glad I unknowingly made that decision.
Will Hobson HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET THE DIRECTOR'S CUT? I want one!
Tweek Tweak Search - Watch Rocky V directors cut
lol liar
Will Hobson same
The directors cut was on TV soooo.........
I’m a Rocky fan to the core. I’ve always loved all six. Man you definitely got me wanting to go watch the directors cut now. I got the first 5 on dvd box set, and all six on blue ray box set. I’ve can’t say I’ve ever paid any attention to the directors cut. Your impersonations were dead on. you have me crying allthrough the video. Great stuff man.
I don't know how many different versions of this movie there is. I watched Rocky V on Netflix and it had some of the things you mentioned from the workprint as well as stuff from the theatrical release. But I agree, the movie is not THAT bad. It was enjoyable
Great Rocky and Paulie impressions.
Yeah, I only ever saw this when we played it at the cinema my family ran, and I remember scenes he's saying were only in the work-print. Might've been that we got a cut of the film released in the UK that was closer to the original work-print.
This video is nothing short of fantastic because of the insight into Rocky V and the franchise as a whole. It makes me appreciate and admire the Rocky franchise more. Top marks. If only this Director's Cut is available for the masses.
You can watch it online
Rocky V is one of my favorites, after the first Rocky & Rocky III!! By the way you do a great Tommy Gunn impression, great video!!
I have a traditions of rewatching all the Rocky films during Christmas each year myself
I can't believe you didn't touch on the closing credits (I assume they weren't in the workprint). It was a perfect way to end what had been planned to be the end of the Rocky series. The montage of stills telling the whole Rocky story from all 5 films while "Measure of a Man" plays- it's one of the best endings ever.
Wow... I like your analysis of all that... I thought I was the only one who gave great attention to that!!!
I’ve always had a pretty soft spot for Rocky V, especially the scene of his memory of Micky in the gym - always brings a tear to my eye!
Btw, you do pretty good impressions of all the characters 😂
I know... where does this guy pull it from?!
Sent here by Chris Stuckmann. Pretty good analysis, I'll sub.
well now i know why i loved rocky 5 and everyone said it was the worst. i grew up with the directors cut DVD and didn't even know it! thanks for the validation that this is a good movie haha
The film was good. I think ppl just didn't like it cause it was a bit different . Rocky fans seem to prefer the exact formula being stuck to.
incorrect rocky 111 was different a d especially 4 people love it but this was a piece of shit
Yep I remember enjoying this as a kid. I will make sure i rewatch when i get the chance.
It was also coming after III and IV, it made all the flaws seem twice as bad.
Imo had Rocky 5 been about the 3rd fight between him an Apollo. Would’ve been damn perfect.
I always loved Rocky 5 ... felt it was nicely done with a unique ending ... that fight on the street was epic!!
Dude you sound like Chris Pratt. When I was listening to the first 5 minutes I kept seeing Star Lord trying to convince rocket or even stark about how Rocky 5 is a great movie
Your Stallone impression is life.
I Agree "Rocky V" and the Directors cut is a great movie. People should give it another try. Also Great Video!
Where do you watch the director’s cut
"My rings outside.." That shit still gives me goosebumps
*Rocky V is one the most underrated movie in history.*
Including Halloween 3 Season Of the Witch
I woodlark say underrated. More like overly hated. It’s still the worst of the series but that doesn’t make it a bad or unenjoyable film.
@@connorgolden4 Exactly!
Halloween 3 upset me so much...at first. Then I saw it as a stand alone movie and was really entertained by it.
Firstly, I'm just a Rocky fan, and grew up with the saga, so I kinda really love em all. If I had to choose my least favorite, I guess V would be it. But, I just watched the workprint of the final fight from Rocky V, and if it's any indication of the rest of it, then you're absolutely right. The scene with Mickey up by the train railing was epic, and I'm glad you didn't spoil it for the rest of us, because 35 years after Clubber killed Mickey (yes) it was awesome to have one final inspirational message from him. I definitely plan on watching the entire workprint, and I'm glad I stumbled upon your breakdown. Oh by the way, your Tommy Gunn impression is flawless. LOL
The Rocky movies are my favorites! So cool to see that Matthew published this video just at my birthday!
I always liked this movie , “my ring is outside”
99% with you. No Easy Way Out scene was amazing i have no idea why you even dogged it.
+RUdigitized haha
No easy way out is awesome and one of the best moments of the series for me
agreed
I love how general the lyrics are. It could apply to anything.
It kinda made the movie longer
The rocky impressions are amazing omg
I agree with you. It could be so much better.
Like every couple months I return to this video and it's just baffling how well put together it is. You did a stellar job.
this one kinda sucks too; i need to remake it
I know... I had to keep it saved for future reference (which is not something I would usually do)! .. It was done so well!!!
@@MATTDALOR1AN Well please, let me know when you do! ... And by the way, with the way you brought up how George Washington Duke's speech was, and how he made you wanna fight, and the way you impersonated it so well (and yet, so funny), I'm surprised at how you did not do the same thing with how he convinced Tommy to fight Rocky... that speech made me wanna fight Rocky!!!
I definitely loved all rocky's. I dont understand why people didnt like it. I always felt it was a perfect way to continue on that was realistic
EXACTLY
Ppl just mad there was no training montage and final fight but like really the story in my opinion is even better than rocky 4 which was kinda the same washed out story other than the fact apollo died
Sweet Jebus! That Tommy Gunn impression was spot on!!
Good video. I've always loved Rocky V so it's nice to hear someone else say it doesn't suck for a change.
Nice vid, I saw the extended cut and I was pleased. However, I do love the flashback sequence of Rock and Mick in the theatrical version, really sweet and emotional scene.
You made an excellent point on how hard it is to write sequels. Your example of the Jaws series was the best example of the series of films you named off.
Rocky V is my second favorite Rocky movie after Rocky Balboa. So for a long time, it was my number one. I don't get why all the hate. I loved it. In Rocky Balboa, Rocky gives a speech to his son in which he says life is about keeping moving forward. Rocky V is the best example of how Rocky learned that lesson. Plus the old lion VS young lion theme really speaks to me.
I loved watching this video. The impressions of various characters in this movie were awesome.
And I agree about the Nickelback syndrome. BTW, I came from Chris' Channel.
Rocky 5 is the movie that I love to rewatch!
Sent by Chris Stuckmann. Really good analysis of Rocky V. Changed my opinion. How can I see the work print version???
Zachary Killen Here :) www.dailymotion.com/video/x15esp9
Your impressions are on point and make it much more enjoyable
Rocky Balboa, heavyweight world champ, can't find any work? No commercials or sponsors? He didnt make atleast enough money selling his things to live in a decent house in a decent neighborhood?
They touched on that in the 2nd film, he isn't good at acting or commercials, and he is hard to promote/sponsor if he can't do that. As well, even if he did manage to secure sponsors or commercial residuals, Paulie mismanaged his funds, which is why he has to move to the old neighbourhood.
Sawyer K he could hardly read
Leon spinks is a janitor
@@NoobZxReviewZ but he does commercials and reads in rocky 3
@@crashcarter8944 wouldn't stop Paulie from mismanaging Rocky's money unless someone knocks sense into Paulie
I’m glad I’m not the only one that likes Rocky V
Wellll..... wwwheen you come up like I diiid . Mumbles!! 😂 🤣🤣😂
We so desperately need a remastered version of the Workprint of "ROCKY V".
its true
Rocky V is my third favourite in the franchise, I like the plot being about how brain damaged Rocky is that he has to quit boxing and how he trains another boxer but neglects his son in the process.
I think it had a great end to the franchise. So what he doesn't win the title and his fortune back, he had his family, his respect and his health and that made him a winner in his own right.
He never really lost his title. . .
Correct he just bowed out of Boxing.
Spot on, how ever over time you may legally have to forefeit title but we all know who the real champ is !!!
And that is why Tommy Gunn was looked down on because he fought a paper champion.
These Rocky impressions are on point!
Rocky 5 is a better film now, than it was when it was released.
I love all 6 rocky films
I loved this vid, hope I can find that director's cut so I too can enjoy it and holy shit dude your impressions are amazingly hilarious
GREAT Rocky tone in your voice! I laughed outloud! " Try knocking me down.....my ring's outside!" That was classic!! I love the ROCKY SAGA! 5 was good, very good emotionally! Mickey's parts in here were very touching! Hey ya' I am 54 now and remember well my 13th birthday in May of 1976 going to see " ROCKY " ....(2 is my perdonal favorite!)....*
Just saw you with Stuckmann and then watched this. I've only seen Rocky 6 and Creed, and although I don't remember 6 too well, I really enjoyed Creed. Now my friend who loves the Rocky series wants to show me all of them. Except 5. I never knew why unti now lol I'll have to show him this and then see about getting a hold of the work-print. Anyway, great vid, I subbed and can't wait to see more!
Honestly ? Today I watched EVERY Rocky movie without stopping at all, and 5 was amazing. People are just frustrated with the street fight, but the symbolism of this movie is uncanny.
Wait Rocky V was bad I loved it!
20 minutes in and had to stop to say thanks! Life-long Rocky fan and this video is a dream come true for me! Can't wait to show Big Olly! :)
Dude, love this video. Great video done, PLEASE MAKE MORE!
The impressions in this video are golden hahahaha
rocky 5 was great... i loved it. it was just sad because rocky was broke and the mickey speech scene was heartbreakin that made it look bad because it made people feel sad. thats it.
perfect analysis. After watching this video i've come to understand that Rocky V failed because it's a family drama.
Rocky 5 was good actually
TacticalPower88 I wouldn’t say good but it is better than people give it credit for
Terrible
John Watterson wasn’t terrible just can’t compete with the other films in the series
It was good and sad
Rocky V always been my favorite.
Good video my man. Subbed.
Thanks for recommending me this film 3 years later,RUclips. Not sure if you're still peeping the comments, but your Sly impersonation is hilarious!
are you kidding me? All YT does is notify me abut this video! Thanks!!
I hope Shout! Factory re-realeses this movie with the work print scenes intact so it can shine a whole new light on the movie.
One of the most underrated rocky videos
It may be the least liked movie in the series but, it definitely had the funniest Rocky Balboa lines. Still cracks me up whenever I watch it.
Holy shit you NAILED that Tommy Gunn impression.
i always liked rocky V. and boy the moment when rocky shows tommy gunn whos boss on the streets.. pricesless and gives me goosebumps everytime. silvester stallone is the best
Good review.
I loved rocky 5 since i saw it in 1991. I still love it and its my favourite rocky. Very underrated movie. Great scenes, dialogue and climatic street fight. Stallone did a great job.
Apollo was Rockys Bestfriend MICKY was like the DAD he never had
Man, your Rocky impressions are cool
This was a amazing video and that voice acting was on point!
Jesus you deserve more views and subscribers..
Thanks for leading me to this vid Chris Stuckmann. Great to watch.
Although I agree with some points Matt made, the Rocky franchise is my favourite of all movie franchises... yes, even V. I've always liked it just how it is, but now I'd love to see the Director's Cut. Rocky Rules. Great work Matt. Thanks Chris.
Rocky V, is a very awesome movie, & has a very powerful meaning, which Family is 1st, & is EVERYTHING. Rocky understood about how much Family is so important after Adrian is pleading, & telling Rocky in the streets, ( Adrian saying to Rocky ) Your loosing US.
My dad, never had a relationship with me, & was always busy with everyone else, & I always had to fight to get time with my dad no matter who was around, so I relate with the movie with Rocky V very well. Its a real film about getting Family back together, & not just about fighting. The scenes with Sage, & Sylvester Stallone was a real purpose through out the film being Father & Son being Home Team Together. Mickey was like a father figure to Rocky from Rocky 1,2,3, when Mickey dies in Rocky 3, it tore Rocky Up, & Always has, the loss of Mickey, effected Rocky, from Rocky 3 to Creed.
I Say Again Rocky V is All About Returning to you Roots, & what matters most is N Life Family. Adrian, Robert, Mickey, & even Apollo was Rocky's inner Circle. Rocky's Family.
Rocky's flashbacks of Mickey in Rocky V was a clear way of showing how Mickey was a Father figure to Rocky, & it was not just about fighting in the ring, but also living in Real Life outside of the Ring to. Mickey Loved Rocky, Mickey clearly says that in Rocky V when Rocky see's, himself, & Mickey in a flash back in ring together in Mighty Mick's Old Gym.
Later in Rocky V, Rocky having been knocked down in the street in front of Mighty Mick's Gym, Rocky is looking up, & then see's a vision of Mickey at the top of the city train rail tracks, & Mickey Tells Rocky I did not hear no bell, then Mickey says to Rocky while Rocky is laying down in the street by Mighty Micks Gym, Mickey says to Rocky Get Up, there's 1 more round, & Mickey tell Rocky Get Up You S*n of B*tch Because Mickey Love's You.
Rocky gets up after being yet inspired by Mickey no twice in Rocky V, then finishes off Tommy Gunn.
Rocky V, is a very emotional Movie, & being able to relate to that kind of movie, in your Real Life living, then you will be able to grasp Rocky V with Real Understanding, & what Rocky V is Really is All About. ( Family, Family, Family, ).
I give Rocky V an 8.5 out of a 10. I have it on VHS Tape, The DVD Versions, The Blu ray Versions, & its worth every penny. ( Yo Rocky It's All About Family. )
Everyone Listen the song called The Measure of A Man By (Elton John ).
That songs really tells everything about Rocky V. Rocky V Rocks N All Aspects of being a Awesome Movie with true meaning.
I'm really happy you made this video. Thanks to you I watched Rocky V and it isn't bad, it's good.
Rocky V was written for a Philadelphia audience. If you haven't lived here you won't get the film.
Ray Gordon Teaches Chess
- i just visited philly for the rocky sites. whats it like living there?
i don't think i'd fit in in philadelphia
I think just cities in general but I agree
Thank you. I've always thought Rocky 5 was better than it was given credit for
Dammit Matt! I'm trying to read and I'm hooked on this!
This guys impressions of Tommy & Stallone are ON POINT lmao 😂
goddamit this was the first movie i ever saw in the movie theater and i chose it over kindergarden cop....AND I DONT REGRET IT!! WOTTA RIDE!! WOTTA GLORIOUS MAGNIFICENT RIDE TO THE GRITTY INNER CITY THAT WAS!!! GO FOR IT!!!
Wow. Yup I finally found the workprint, and it's not only not bad, it's actually quite good. I wish, they'd have released this version. Everything about it is better.
I do not hate Rocky V.......I actually LOVE it. It tosses out the formula and manages to get Rocky back to his roots. Introduces the brain damage....a thing forgotten in subsequent films. To me, the worst of the Rocky films was #4....which was a music video instead of a film. It really copied the formula set forth in #3 (characters dies, Rocky faces his foe for redemption). Rocky V had real heart.
Wow... I can't believe you think that... but it was funny at the same time!!!
I love these long movie review / analysis. So much better than the other five minutes movie review
