- It's happening all across the United States, in big cities and small towns, in liberal and conservative places of government ... people's cars and homes are being broken into, and in many occurrences, the perpetrators of those crimes are young children as young as age 10. The outcry from people, victims and non-victims, is growing.
Most recently, in Washington, DC, a 13-year-old, Karon Blake, was shot and killed by a resident who alleged that Blake was breaking into cars between 3am and 4am. There was a community meeting where people called for the shooter to be named, arrested, and prosecuted, and there were loud voices shouting "justice for Karon." Then came the voices asking, where was Karon's parents? Why was a 13-year-old out at 3am and 4am? There were calls to hold the parents accountable.
Sarita Curtis is a parent who had a 13-year-old son that was out at 3am and 4am breaking into and stealing cars - going on joy rides. In one incident, Sarita recognized her son in a stolen vehicle, and when he noticed that she saw him, he led her on a car chase.
In this episode of The Offshoot, Curtis, in a very open and vulnerable conversation, tells us where she was when her son was breaking into and stealing cars during his teenage years - between the ages of 12 and 18. Curtis, in great detail, tells us what she was doing when her son was getting influenced by others. And Curtis tells us if parents should be held accountable for the criminal misconducts of their children. It's a conversation about real people in real, everyday life situations.
Dad's need to be involved with these youth. Both girls and boys. A man's influence is paramount.
My heart goes out to this lady. But thank God she has preservered. It will also help if the District brought back rec centers.
Thanks for the mother sharing her story. It provides a different view of the effect juvenile crime has on the family.
Noo.. Why was this 13 year old OUT at 4 a.m?
The society as a whole is going to have to change if we want to truly develop better people. We have a society that glorifies bad behavior thru media.
DC has plenty of programs. Rec centers. Getting the kids to stay in the programs as this parent stated is the issue. How do we get them off the corner away from those violent video games. Gangster Rap is not helping our kids thinking also. While this mother was trying hard the rest of the community where there was no parent accountability that allowed the kid to stay in his mess with out consequences is the issue. We as a people need to start looking at how we are raising our kids. What we allow them to do at a young age that leads to older behaviors. Just one man thought who was a single parent. O ye. Fathers stop running it is your responsibility too. And for real, for young men you have a bigger responsibility then moms. It's very difficult for moms to show him how to be a real man. We need to stop looking to our elected officials for help. It's on us as a people.
@terrygoings3726 Terry, you said it correctly. I totally agree with you on that.
Yes, programs don't raise kids. Parents raise kids.
I'm so confused as to why we keep harping on the parents when the statistic have already revealed 54% of the children who are being born have neither a father or a mother that they are being raised by. Keron Blake had been in foster care since he was five years old. What part of "these kids don't have any Parents" don't you understand. The main program they need is one that encourages these people to STOP having kids they refuse to take care of. FYI, I am a single mother who "raised" her son in DC.
@FUCKTHESYSTEM70 I looked it up and I think what you are talking about is the % of BC born outside of marriage which is 74%. Being born out of wedlock is different from being raised in foster care or by someone other than one of your two parents. I was surprised at the high percentages. Things have changed. Be blessed.
She is right they need more programs and the stuff they took out of the schools they need to put it back in the schools. They need to learn of this and they writing skills. It's is so wrong the way they do things and take them way . They think DC doesn't need it all we need is building's and the kids don't need to learn. What's this world coming to.
No excuses! And your right 1000%. So I’m not going to argue about that. These kids have a lot going on mentally, emotionally, and physically. Some of the kids my son was with needed food to eat, clothes to wear and the list goes on. Some of these household don’t have two parent household because of certain situations that is beyond the child’s control. The teachers are with our children more than we are and they see and hear things that he/she may not display at home. So this is where the village comes in and we work together when the missing piece isn’t there. Life can’t stop because one parent isn’t there the other has to move on. But it will definitely do a child more harm mentally. So putting in programs and staff not activities that will assist these kids with life everyday situation is important overall. They all love money well on the job training, how to save, how to express your anger, trade etc are the classes and workshops that use to be in the schools. Armstrong had accounting well how about those that would like to work in the banking industry to be able to take these classes for free. Receive certification by 12th grade, work part-time in the bank. And by the time they graduate full time employees. Not every parent nor child can afford college. But if there interested in other types of job lets get them going. Then help us help them. As for the dad and/or mom being in their life not all children are lucky to have both parents. Some are Blessed by the one they have.
DC has close boys and girls clubs in all wards. We hear about teenage crime from the mayor, yet we don't hear anything about combating the issue by offering programs to at least take them off the streets.
Sure, the school system has cut programs like civics, home economics, and even physical education. Then we have the parents who are working trying to survive and can't put in the time with their kids like they want to. Then we also have the parents who just don't take the time period.
@Isiah Fleming you know I was thinking the same thing. The Boys and Girls club would be a great start for these kids. The school took out the programs that can help prepare them for life. These kids can do nothing.
@FUCKTHESYSTEM70 everyone is not fortunate enough to have a mother or father sometimes. So sometimes others have to step in to help these kids.
We can’t keep trying to say it’s the dads or the parents when there ain’t nothing for nobody to prevent these issues. Everyone wants to point fingers but nobody is doing anything much for not only these kids but their parents and community too.
I’m here and I see it and feel it too.
If it takes a village?
This hood mentality ain’t building no villages and gentrification ain’t helping either butt… they can do better that what is here now.
Wow
As a compliment to the host. He has pretty teeth. I'm all about pretty teeth like mine as well.
