  • Come meet a nice lady who when she's not moonlighting as a real life TV/movie star, runs lovely Bamboo Resort in Khanom (hotelier Miss Nadine was instrumental in capturing 'The Serpent' in real life... that's REAL IRL btw;) Then head up the mountains to Samet Chun waterfall in a very beautiful setting. Finally, tour Khanom Town and re-vist affable Miki, this time at his excellent Dusty Gecko Saloon & Deli. Hope you enjoy and take care all. STL

    Oh wow, I watched Serpent on BBC iplayer here in Malaysia & was on the edge of my SEAT entranced! Unbelievable true story. I still have a soft spot for The Beach movie because of the soundtrack & this is the 1st major production afaik since then. I spent a long time with Nadine when I was in Khanom to visit. She is a Thailand national treasure. If you guys are planning to travel by land to Koh Samui make sure you make a stop in Khanom at the Bamboo resort at least a night or two before you get there. It is really worth it. The area is unspoiled (unlike Koh Samui) and Nadine is an extraordinary host. And yes, if you watch the mini-series The Serpent you will gauge better how extraordinary Nadine really is and what she did.

    How did you miss Gary and Donna at CC Bar, they are there all the time! So funny seeing my hood “advertised!” Btw, if you kept going up that dirt track you turned around on it would just take you to The Blue Terrace in Nai Phrao, better to take the main road. Check out Hin Lat Waterfall next time, if you do the loop, you’ll go by our land on the return! Join the Good People of Khanom group on FB if you want to keep up with the goings-on around there.

    • @SideTripLife
      @SideTripLife  3 года назад

      I figured that track might end up around the Blue Terrace. Lovely place, just not a fan of de-foresting the hillside it sits on (ironically, now looks like an erosion danger to the place itself...) Will deffo check out Hin Lat and more too, thanks for the tip! Will also pop back to CC's soon and in future, swing by your glamping biz when opened.
      Thx also for the FB Group tip, tried joining but after 48 hrs no approval - was only going to say a hearty thanks to the wonderful community of Khanom (no self-promotions). But ah well. LOVE Khanom, both the locals and local expats remain some of the nicest I've come across.

    As usual, another great episode and series. Right up to your usual standards. Out of all the other Thailand RUclipsrs I watch, you are by far the best. Being that I have gone on side trips like these in Thailand, I have two questions. 1) You are traveling around on a motorbike, do you have a small suitcase that you use to travel on the bike or do you use a backpack? I have never rented a motorbike or car when on these side trips, but would consider doing so next time if alone instead of with someone as I have done in the past. 2) What app do you use to navigate around? Google maps? Or something else? Keep up the good work and thanks. John. Phoenix, Arizona (by way of NY)

    • @SideTripLife
      @SideTripLife  3 года назад

      TY John in Phoenix by way of NY! Small carry on suitcase + small backpack, both fit on a bike (suitcase squeezed in space between seat & steering column). Google maps + intuition (both somewhat fallible but always enjoy the journey;)

    • @baazooka86
      @baazooka86 3 года назад

      @@SideTripLife Thanks for the reply. When I based myself out of Pattaya, I brought one huge suitcase. While there, I bought a smaller suitcase online specifically for side trips. I had the suitcase delivered to my friends restaurant located on 2nd road between Soi 7 and Soi 8. I had to get my new suitcase up to my condo located in Cozy Beach. I had the restaurant workers there at Domicile (the name of the restaurant) strap the suitcase to my back using rope tied around my waist and tied to the back of the seat. lol Even the locals were amused at the sight of me as I drove down beach road and on up to Cozy Beach. I have a great picture of me on the bike with the suitcase strapped to me before I took off from Domicile. lol Cheers.

    Question is it possible to drive the 4 wheel atv's on the road as if you're using a scooter or is it not allowed? Would much prefer the 4 wheel for added stability since I've never driven a 2 wheel before

    • @SideTripLife
      @SideTripLife  Год назад

      ATV's are not 'legal' to drive on the road but many do and the local boys in brown turn a blind eye. Some even manage to register and plate as a 'farm' vehicle but no idea how they record a corresponding green/blue book (use ATV engine/chassis # I suppose?). Also over 50cc likely need a licence. Less than 50cc or electric equivalent no need though. Insurance is another issue. It's all good using it to nip round to the market etc, until it isn't (ie accident, injusring someone etc etc). More questions than answers I'm afraid. STL

    When Interpol finally got involved he and his girlfriend came to Teloch Bahan, Penang, and hung out (Hid out) at Mr. Lim's fisherman house with me. Every day I said I have to go into Penang to see if my wire transfer from the states came in. He said "I'll go with you" and every day for a week we would go to the bank. He announced that they were heading south to Singapore and left, three hours before a swarm of plainclothes cops showing up looking for him. That's when I found out who and what he was. I was so lucky the bank held onto my money for so long. I went back to Bangkok, and saw him on Patpong. He lied about where they were going. to left a false trail for the cops. I am lucky to be alive and writing this.

    • @SideTripLife
      @SideTripLife  3 года назад

      Unfortunately no place remains the same as years ago, despite how much we may wish it to. But fortunately Khanom is still a gem. The reality is that the Thai Govt is seeking to promote the entire coastal area further (ie: new coastal rd to Sichon etc, etc).
      --------
      Thai Govt/PRD News QUOTE:
      The “Riviera Thailand” project, which covers the west coast from Phetchaburi to Songkhla, highlights the beauty and luxury of the tourist attractions in the areas. The campaign is in line with the government policy of using tourism to distribute income to the locals and tackle social inequality.
      -------
      Actually, just by visiting now, or even years ago, one is/was in effect prompting further development (knowingly or not).
      The alternative is, designate the entire area a Ntnl park with no development permitted (but then have to find livelihoods for all the families who rely on visitors). Or, institute a no further development and no migrants +no visitors policy (or limit visitor #s & charge $$$$ per day ala Bhutan). Which should we choose?
      It's fine and of course natural to say "It was so much nicer when I visited back when..." but what might one propose as a realistic solution?
      As much as I too wish it could remain as is, or go back to how it was, going forward hopefully Khanom retains it's slow pace, idyllic seaside charm and wonderful sense of community.
