  • Overnight in tipi. I use amadou from the tinder fungus to make flint and steel tinder for fire lightning. Make a tripod with a branch as rope for cooking. Make a table from logs by drilling holes and using wedges, no rope. I also enjoy some fish over campfire and the fact that the permanent bushcraft cramp is starting to be well established. Open the full video description for more information.
This is part 5. All episodes can you see here • Highlights from a summ...

    Day: 10°C (50°F)
    Night: 8°C (46,4°F)
Location: Sapmi - the land of the Sami people in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Clean and remote classic northern wilderness. Fresh water rivers. Pine, spruce and birch forrest. Mountains, bears, wolves, eagles, reindeers etc. No wildlife is giving campers problems. I can't give you any information about my location, only that I am somewhere in Sapmi. A few questions:
    1. How did you make the tinder?
By boiling the "amadou" layer from the "tinder fungus" in about 50/50% wood ashes and water for about 1 hour. Amadou is a layer next to the outside hard shell on the fungus. All hard wood ashes can be used, but birch ashes should be some of the most ideal. You can cut off the amadou or you can, like I do in the video, make the fungus softer by boiling and separate it by hitting and or pulling. You can use green or dry tinder fungus - just try to avoid the rotten once (the one I use in the video is close to be to rotten). I can't tell you why it works - but it makes the amadou a hundred times easier to use for fire lightning. In my area of the word have tinder fungus been used as the main tinder long before the viking age and way after the vikings. The tinder I made in the video will be enough for lighting a few hundred campfires. "Tinder fungus" is a specific fungus growing on hardwood trees and very common in my part of the world. other names for the fungus is "Horse's Hoof Fungus", "Fomes fomentarius" and "Hoof Fungus".
    2. Is the water safe to drink?
Yes. Almost all water in Sapmi can you drink straight from the source. All from remote locations. It comes from the near by mountains - meltwater.

This is how a lot people enjoyed nature and perfected skills and hobbies before cell phones! I remember my grandpa doing these things and it was fantastic. Like fishing using a trout line, using a net and respecting tools of everyday survival created used by our hands, and appreciating everything. You set the stage for a revolution, are a role model as to how to respect those things again. Who knows, one day soon we may depend on them again.

Intelligence, skill, patience, mastery and art as well as respect for the nature, simplicity and beauty. You bring us so much happiness. Thank you. I loved to know about "amadou as tinder". I also love to know why things work, which took me to investigate what the heck is amadou and tinder ( my language is Spanish), and I found a great video by Cimbrer Brushcraft about it. I love to know that cider woods have all these chemicals that are used for explosives and therefore using ashes from them impregnates the fungus with ignitible properties and that is why it works so well.

Rune has such a calm and relaxed manner when doing things that I often find I have to re-watch some things because it's so enjoyable to just watch that I get drawn in and just enjoy seeing things develop and unfold. I've never seen anyone process amadou like that before, particularly the pounding/flattening part. I can see some real advantages to doing that. It seems so obvious after the fact, but something I had never thought of. Thanks for sharing another great adventure with us!

    Salve Rune,
a German research team has dealt with the historical tinder finds (conventional tinder from the Trama layer of tinder fungus growing on dead beech). A Tinder Knocker from the Sauerland makes the tinder for hobby. He cooks the tinder sponge (or chaga) material, dries and knocks it flat, but then he nitrates these cloths with ammonia (1000 after Christ with horse / cattle urine). This chemical serves as a fire accelerator. It works great. Greetings from the low mountain range. Alexander
Alexander

Another well done, enjoyable video. Thank you for your time and effort brother!
Maybe an 'impolite' subject, but we, as a people, have lived so long with modern plumbing that many (most?) people have never gone to the bathroom outside. I have had camping companions that went 3-5 days, holding it in because they were afraid/didn't know how to use 'Nature's bathroom'
I was lucky enough to have some mentors show me a number of different ways. Urinating isn't too much problem, even for women, but doing a bowel movement can be an issue. Obviously humans have been doing it the old fashioned way longer than the new way :) (how quickly we can lose the old skills. There is a Ray Mears' video where he spends time with a remote primitive tribe in South America. They have to walk 2 days to get to a place where they can buy matches. Ray asked them to show him the way the tribe Used to make fire? They couldn't do it. A couple had an idea, but couldn't pull it off. Ray had to re-teach them... Even though they are primitive and walk 2 days to get matches...)
Back to bowel movements.... I find squatting, torso leaning over knees works OK. Pull pants just below knees, and spread knees to keep tension on the pants to keep them off the ground and out of the path of any effluvia. . .
A farmer showed me about standing, back to a tree, about 12"-18" away and leaning/sitting back, its sort of like sitting down, with the tree against your back, holding you up. Do the pants/tension thing as before.
Your ejecta goes straight down, ending in a neat pile at the base of the tree. .
    Do you bury, or not?
near a camp, if you don't bury or something else, small pests can get in your shit and then go through the rest of your shit in camp. Mixing things you probably don't want mixed...
With the tree, or squatting, you can dig hole first, do your business, then bury it quick and easy. Although you have to have good aim when doing the squatting method. . .
The one thing I haven't figured out (and every environment will be different) is what to use to 'clean up'.
even if you are going out for a month or so, it is easy to have enough TP to take care of your needs. But what if TP isn't available? Do you local materials that work? A wad of lichen?
In one or two countries in Africa (Uganda?...Kenya?...) they have a bush they call the 'toilet paper bush" and the leaves of this tree to wipe with. My wife ordered some seeds and grew some in the yard. (we are in the Caribbean) and it would certainly work, just not my favorite choice, but Glad to Have It in and emergency... :)

Thanks. I have never brought along toiled paper on trips, but no problem if people I travel with do so, but I just squad free standing and use moss or leafs - usually moss. I am always so remote that I never dig any holes.
