Test Drive (Accolade, 1987) [IBM, EGA]

A complete run through the IBM EGA version of the original Test Drive, developed by Distinctive Software and released by Accolade and Electronic Arts in 1987.
This is where road racing started on the PC platform. The game saw 2 sequels and several add-on disks before the series went into hibernation. Actually, part of the team went on to start the Need for Speed series during that time. Between 1997 and 2004, the series was rebooted and saw a whopping 13 new titles for Windows and various consoles. The second reboot came in 2006, when French developer Eden Games and Atari collaborated on Test Drive Unlimited, which added open-world driving and online elements. These latest Test Drive titles still stay true to the original concept: being "lifestyle simulations" more than just driving simulations. They try to give players the possibility to experience as realistically as possible not just the driving itself, but everything that goes with owning an expensive sports car.

Some of my earliest gaming memories are of this game. Just the sound track and sfx are ingrained somewhere deep down. The image of the dude in the shades and of the rear view shot at the end has always stuck with me.

I confirm that play on the keyboard is a bad idea. I just finished this game and it's hard to overtakes another cars, especially at high speed. I love to ride: Lotus, Lamborghini and Ferrari.

I remember playing this in all 4 colors (CGA) since it required inserting floppy that I didn't have for 16 colors (EGA). It took me some time switching from TD turning when you need to turn wheel back to what we now understand as normal steering :) BTW: Some time ago I tried playing it again and I have some problems with keyboard acting like I'm writing

Incredible! I had a Sinclair PC200 (8086 with floppy and CGA screen) and I used to own this game, keyboard as well! I t looked MUCH worse on CGA though, hahaha!

I do for most newer games, but for some of the older ones I use the keyboard as well. Analog controls were not always so great... it's the opposite in Test Drive though, it's almost impossible to play well using the keyboard!

I prefered Ferrari in this game. But many years ago some use Lamborgini (mightest car) too. My best 1 stage in Ferrari (1;49 min) - not analog joystick. Test Drive (1987). PC. Best 1 stage. Gameplay
