My new favorite Dark Academia book is "If we were Villians". It is so beautifully written and even though I didn't really care about the main plot, it was a 5/5 star for me 🥰
I would say dark academia for me means the dark side of knowledge/intelligence/academia. Either exploring the things people do for knowledge and pushing the boundaries, or how academia affects human interactions. That's just my take on it. I don't think it has to be in a school
Some of those I would say are "what a character would read in a dark academia setting" just for me: I get the vibe the setting doesn't have to be a school but something like it. Like, hunger games...in my head, has the same force proximity, dorm/close quarters, having to better yourself in some way energy. But HG is dystopian and def not DA but like, that energy? Maybe its a matter of what you want IN your DA stories? Because I'm sure some people will only want a school setting... interesting stuff
I think Academia pretty much implies that it happens in a school setting. Otherwise it would be dark fantasy/romance/etc
