- In the summer of 2008, iconic surfer and former Pipe Master Rob Machado flew to Indonesia to experience a different kind of surf trip. A journey that would take him way beyond his comfort zone, to the point where he could finally be alone with his thoughts, his desires and the empty perfection of an unnamed Indian Ocean reef. What did he discover? You never stop dreaming. Even when they come true.
What a cool adventure to catch on video
Man I would just like to say, truly amazing :)
I'm not that good with my words but I found robs journey life realigning :)
Travel the far east.
The next wave we ride is much better from japan
One of the great surfers in this world highly underrated a truly great example of flow and timing the best ever.
Wow. Much more than a surf movie. "It's hard to evolve as a person when your life is constantly under the microscope. It's important to disappear sometimes." Great insights combined with cheesy humor. The Indonesian tribe at the end, made me appreciate the social unity of those people, where everybody has your back, versus the solitary existence of Rob Machado who represents the west, where it's basically every man for himself. I mean, you could die like a dog homeless on the street and nobody would really care.
What surf board bag is that 😆 that bag is a mvp
I am in the same head space and although it sounds like he is depressed I think he gets so much pleasure from being alone. I to love being alone Surfing. People around me takes so much energy from me I’m exhausted. Alone I’m in paradise and the surf is pure bliss
Actually... he really is depressed. His wife had just left him and he was going through a very tough time.
Yep It’s was confirmed he was going through rock bottom whilst filming this.
everyone shut up. If you really understood surfing and proffesionals you would know their just laid back and chill not stoned or depressed so just calm down. I live close to Rob and hes one of the coolest dudes ive ever met
You need to get out more.
Then you're a pretty lucky man sir. And you should ignore some yt comments.
Well im a laidback surfer and im stoned on weed all day and i go through periods of depression. Also addicted to heroin for 5 years.
I need this magic backpack! So small but it carries a tent, short trousers, jeans, thee pot, guitar, a t-shirt, a bottle of water and loads of cash...........Man is this guy depressed or what, traveling should make u happy. But he is sure one of the best surfers on the planet.
“I just wana go surfing. Just looking for wavves man” - best line so far
5:08 what a merciless drop in from Kelly hahaha
All I need is a cool buzz and some tasty waves and I'm fine.
i dunno man one glass of wine im done
Really wish you would not post my video without permission. Could you please remove.
Who gives a shit! It was made 10 year's a go.. move on.
Rob is so smooth on a wave it's serene.... also, he's not an "ugly America tourist". He truly got to know the villagers, helped them dig a well, and played soccer with them. He came across as kind all the time. Thanks for sharing the journey.
Hey that's my bike.. lol
Good Herbs and Epic Waves. What more could a surfer ask for ?!
Currently going through shit too, I've found surfing to be my only solace. This film puts a lot of shit into perspective.
really inspiring, thanks for sharing!!! peace
one of the best barrel riders and all round chilled dude
He acts like chicken joe from surfs up in this movie lol
Sour grapes robin hood
What is awesome about Rob is he is doing what most including me won't do. Experiencing life at a totally higher level, touching in with his inter peace.
checking it out from Iraqi Kurdistan one fine evening
The best by far since Endless Summer.. at 72 make me remember those days, and I cry.
Come on let's get back in the water.. ito am72
Rob is such a great surfer that he deserved a world title. Had he won the title, it would have spared us this adolescent movie. This movie was more selfish than surfing. Rock stars…
How does he manage to have a guitar when he's not carrying one?
post-celebrity surf-depression, Miki Dora did'nt get out of it and turned it into a way of life
That island with the villagers was Sumba, in East Nusa Tenggara province 🤙
i love it. could see this every day!
just selling a dream
"The Drifter" the sab story of living the dream... Hey Rob, quit whining.

And it’s a 5’2” Biscuit 🤙
Rob’s kids have to be so proud of him when they watch the kind of stuff he did/does. Great legacy!
On those Sunda Islands may be he will meet the spirit of Joseph Conrad.
"As enjoyable as it was, I still had a vision of my quest”
hahahaha yes!

Goddamn… No ‘AC’. That’s a hard life.
Shark fin soup is expensive, there used to be a lot of sharks in Indo, shark fishing is the reason you hardly see them any more.
not complainin' when in the lineup.
Watching this has made me wholeheartedly humbled. What a sick story.

How is something like this filmed?
A lot of it was staged. The taxi driver for example, wasn't a real one. They paid a real taxi driver and borrowed his cab for a short while. Also when his bike broke down, in reality lots of people kept stoping and offering to help so they had to keep telling them to go away. A bit pointless to do this in that way in my opinion.
@@floydpitt7590 How did you find these things out?
@@gleaningthescriptures5897 It's pretty obvious really; for eg in the film Rob throws his mobile phone down on the ground. Apart from the fact no surfer (especially Rob) would litter like this, the camera films it ringing later on and when he's 'alone' in his tent he's still being filmed- it's pretty much all all 'Hollywood smoke and mirrors' unfortunately. Also there is an interview with Rob where he himself says this. Can't remember which one it is at the moment. I'll find it and send it to you.
@@gleaningthescriptures5897 Apologies. It was a written interview he did. The interviewer says - ''I have so many favourite scenes: the taxi ride, for one, when the driver scrapes green from his nose with a long nail, then willfully inspects it. That stuff was absolutely incredible''. Rob replies- ''He used to be D.Hump’s assistant, First. We threw him in a shirt, grabbed some guy’s taxi, paid him off, we both had mics, and then we just started driving around the block with the camera mounted on the hood. He killed it. There were moments when I just started laughing, like, dude, stop it already! You’re killing me, man! It’s so Indonesian how he scrapes the green and then inspects it, without fear of censure, without embarrassment.(Laughs) Totally! He totally fit the whole mould. He jumped in there, pulled out his little ciggies, his cloves, and he was lighting em off, he became a taxi driver! “Hey, where you from? You like massage, good massage!”
And, when you say, “Put the air con on, man,” and he replies: “Fucking hot!” Fucking hot! ''I know! They have the ability to say, “Oh yeah, there was a bombing right here five years ago, but it’s cool, we’ve moved on, here we go.” It’s an amazing attribute and you have to hand it to em. A lot of the times, we’d be filming stuff, I’d be pushing my motorcycle in the rice fields, and constantly people would stop, the Balinese, to try and help fix my bike. I’d be, like, no , no it’s okay, and I’d try to explain that we were making a movie that there’s guys over there with long lenses. They’d say, no, no, no and try and push my bike with me. Even if it was obvious they were in a hurry to get somewhere it was irrelevant. They live in the moment. “Wait, we gotta help this guy! He’s here! It’s now!” That’s the beauty of the Indonesian''. Derek Rielly.
@@floydpitt7590 Thanks floyd. I figured that was how. Another thing that is beyond my figuring is the scenes where Rob is getting off the bus: do they have a guy there with a camera waiting at the stop? Do they ask the bus driver, once they get to the sto, to back up and do the stop again after the filmer gets off? And the helping out at the town. Was that something they happened across, or pre-planned that they would help out at that town? Those are the things I was wondering about.
either this guy is just stoned to the bone all the time or needs to get treatment for his obviously major depressions...
Ya growing up with everything given to you, parents who stand beside you during everything you do, and an attitude like your too cool...he's no Dora.
Rob let me say that if you weren´t an excellent surfer nobody would stop to speak with you. I think your thoughts are not so different from anyone. Enjoy the life you had because is far more easy than many of us have to deal with every day.
matias lopez llovet lol u sound depressed mate
Matias, I agree-- Not as enlightening of a message as Rob seems to be trying to put forth.
Although, this is in his relative youth, so I cannot speak to his mindset presently.
Irregardless, the message of travel, introspection, and open-minded search ultimately supercedes these criticisms of juvenility, and that, I can respect.
@Scott Adam , irregardless, I still stand by my point ; )
great doc
thx rob
