Bilal spoke openly to VladTV about his second album, Love for Sale, being stolen after he was finished recording everything, and having to start over. Bilal explained that it was a difficult time for him, and at one point he considered leaving the music industry, however, after seeing love from the fans for the bootlegged tracks, he was inspired to make more music.
During the conversation, Bilal spoke about working with J Dilla on songs before he passed, and why he thinks music in America is no longer about the art form. To hear more, hit the above clip. Развлечения

1st Born Second is up there with Baduizm, Mama’s Gun, Urban Hang Suite, Brown Sugar, Who is Jill Scott, etc. straight classic.
i agree 100%
Love for sale is better tho
I can agree with that
Most definitely
No one talks about this but the digital age really fucked up some of our best artist. You can tell this man was hurt about the album bootlegging.
Corey Taylor the world is forever changing .. if artist keep on putting stuff out , fans still going to purchase merch and show up for the concerts even if the record is leaked .. that actually makes it better for the fans who can’t wait to purchase / stream the official version when it comes out
Jame5 on the backhand it subtracts real artistry and a genuine experience like albums use to do. It's all superficial gain truthfully from who actually makes good music to who looks the most outrageous
It really did... It doesn't get talked about, because the fans don't see the pain in it. Artists speak on it all of the time
he literally lived thru the transition of analog cd to digital.. damn.. that must have been fucked.. i lived thru it too.. i make music, i always wanted to make my own cd.. but i did it late.. so now i give it away to friends in soundcloud and mediafire.. in alot of ways? its cool for independent artists.. to be able to share our music without paying to burn cds.. and have a whole band.. we can produce our own music now independently.. with ableton live.. so i love this era.. but it must have been fucked back in the late 90s early 2000s when it barely went down.. all that kazaa and napster era was probably fucked for alot of people who were expecting to sell albums..
I cut vinyl, tapes, cd's, this transition and lac of loyalty on behalf of "fans" kills most talent.
Bilal is one of the greatest ever. Incredible artist and singer
Agreed
I grew up with Bilal, his aunt Carol and he used to come to hang with us on weekends. then when he went to Del State and sung under Mr. Byrd but he was hanging with Chris and Wesley... I love Bilal, his is so talented and he writes
Love for sale would’ve been a classic! Hate that it never came out.
Dope Album
It still came out we just can’t stream it that’s all
It’s definitely on my iTunes
It really really really would have. Too many gems from that leaked album.
Bilal doesn’t get the credit he deserves.
MoneyOverFame Dude has so much range! Those who know, know
MoneyOverFame But that 2nd album Love For Sale album is Classic tho!..
One of the (if not) best male vocalist in the game!
Facts!
If he changed his name to _Bilal Oliver_ which is his real last name, then more people would notice him and it would be far easier to follow his work and news about him. He stuck with a generic name that gets lost in the shuffle.
damn, even unfinished 'love for sale' sounded amazing, can't imagine how it would have sounded if Dilla and Dre would be involved more into finishing it.
The Amazing Bilal! I have everything he’s ever put out (except the bootleg) and I’ve seen him in concert numerous times...it’s an experience!
“Who Are You?”
Legit one of the best vocalists and electric soul singers the last 20 years.
I hate that great artists like him & D’Angelo are not making music right now 😭😭
It doesn't pay to make real creations. Mass produced garbage is cheaper and easier.
this album was my first intro to bilals music. Still one of my favorite albums. Bilal is the Goat
That album Love 4 Sale was truly dope. I remember hearing it on myspace back in 2003. The project was so dope that I decided that I'm going to wait until it actually releases in stores. I waited 4yrs and it never came out so I was like eff it, I'm going to download it. LOL!
Bilal is not feeling Vlad.
Fish Bajan at all !!!!! 😂
Many don’t
Enough to have done the interview tho
Love for Sale is literally one of my favorite album! See you in DC next week!
Bilal's 1st Album was a masterpiece
is*
Love for sale album is a Masterpiece! Im glad i still have the album
Any Interview with Dilla is mentioned is a good interview for me
best concert you'll ever see is a Bilal show, one of the best albums of the decade is Airtight Willies Revenge
True Dat , New Jacks check him out!!!
Airtight Willie & Me is an Iceberg Slim book
Bilal has an album by the same name.
thanks Kitchen Jones gotta educate these youngins
No prob.
Bilal is by far one of the most underrated artist and I do mean artist of all time!!
Cultural Awareness moment: The "Another Dr Dre Production" stamp was paying homage to Soul Train and the gentleman who did the announcing for the show..the late great Mr Sid Mccoy. At the end of the show he would say "This is a Don Cornelius Production". Dre actually had Sid Mccoy himself do the Dr Dre vocal stamp at the end of a couple of other tracks. He did it about two or three times.
Just his personality and that may be true as well
You are right bro......and if VLAD was actually down he would've known this!
One of the songs is STR8 WEST COAST by KNOCTURNAL
So many dope artist got lost in the shuffle once the entire Neo-Soul movement phase died out its fk'ed up. A lot of very dope artist and music came from that period.
anthony plowden facts tho... That label was put on artists too fast imo. Their names were attached to the genre and once the genre faded, those artists were pushed to the back burner. Soul is soul...neo soul was just our generations spin on it.
it should have never died
WAAAYYY too MANYY *REAL* Artists to mention that got lost out there.. A LOT of them gave up as well...
He will always be one of my favorites!
Love Bilal
Love for sale is the best rnb album ever from any neo soul artist
Love 4 Sale was and IS classic music. He should put it out.
Bilal is one if the greatest entertainers ever!! I've seen him live several times and it was always the best ever!! His voice in impeccable 😍 ❤
such a talented guy!
Po' thang. I have a theory regarding bootlegging. I feel like the record labels secretly do that in order to sabotage artists. This will make the artist get fed up and leave. A similar thing curiously happened to Mya. Hell, you get tired. You done put in hella work for the shit to curiously end up leaking. Instead of being honest and just letting the artist go, they'd rather go around the mulberry bush. It's just bad for business. It's a shame too because this brotha can sing. Out of all those 2000's brothas, he was one of the best. Bilal, Anthony Hamilton, Glenn Lewis, Miss Jaheim were primo, vocally. Po' Bilal.
Second album was amazing the bootlegged version
highfived have to agree!.. It was Classic!..
it was so dope!
His best
Real talk vlad....thank you for asking those dilla questions #salute
One of the best
That soundbyte at the end of "Fast Lane" reminds Bilal of Soul Train becuz it is the late Don Cornelius saying it , LOL! #FunFact
No dis but it is not Don Cornelius. The Soul Train announcer on the song and the show was Sid McCoy
Bilal; he gives me strong Marvin Gaye vibes. The way he speaks, his whole countenance. I think Marvin Gayes spirit was regenerated into bilal.
Bilal and Ledisi did a concert in tribute to Curtis Mayfield. It is AWESOME!
A great modern soul singer 💯
Everyone on this social media has listened or went bilal concerts i performed and know da brotha damn good musican and soul playa
LOVE FOR SALE...DOPE ALBUM
I love Bilal music, I was 19 when his first album came out, I hate that I never brought his CD but I do love his singles, I'm going to purchase it off of Amazon.
The most amazing artist ever 🔥
Bilal is a legend def doesn’t get his respect, shout out to vlad too but he giving ppl interviews that y’all might have forgot about or never heard of if u young
Omg I'm here at 39 views....lemme come back when the comments get good...vlad if you see this good job on this interview..... (& I specifically meant this one)
I watched perform Love For Sale in ATL... in December like 2006 or 2007.
Check out bills first born album is A STRAIGHT CLASSIC
i think Vlad goes to Wikipedia to get his "facts."
I know right some of these interviews is painful to watch, need a new interviewer
Only use one engineer and wipe the session when done. Jay Z and Timbaland had one engineer for years.
How am I just now seeing this?
Now...i could WRITE songs for this brother right here.
Tremendously gifted.
The first time I heard of him was on Nightmare w/ Clipse.
That album is the shit!
I need that robe
Str8 west Coast by Knoc-Turn'al had that Dr. Dre signature
Second project was bananas
😥
Something to Hold on To and Hollywood are the most notable songs on that unreleased project.
E-Live Da God Get of my Hair and Sweet Sour bro
See this is what’s dope about it because every one got a different highlight. LOTS of ppl think “White Turns to Grey” was the “it” song on there. To me it was “All For Love”, and Make Me Over and Hands of Time (if it was mixed differently), others it was Get outta my hair….I’m just saying this album was GOOD period.
Love for sale is my favorite SOUL FUNK RN B album EVER 😩 EVEEEEEEERRRRRRUH 💔
I wish bilal would release that African rhythm joint with Dilla
It makes no sense to scrap a project just because it got leaked .. your true fans still going to buy the record and show up to concerts and purchase merch .. these artist be trippin
Jame5 with him its not about the money but the creative control issue that is reccurent within the entertainment industry. The people that really care about their craft care more about having control
Jame5 it's deeper than that... A bootleg for a gold artist like Bilal at a time like that was homicidal. People aren't gonna pay for what they are getting for free, and that hurt artists who needed to show that their numbers matched the buzz. Careers were broken when the digital age came under full strength
Love 4 Sale is the greatest soul album never released
I bet if he released the album in current day it’d still do numbers because people would support despite the past bootleg
Love for sale was a beast
The title doesn't match the content of the interview. He stated that be was bummed about the album getting dropped by interscope, but that it getting bootlegged and taking off regardless inspired him to keep making music in a fresh new way.
Watch Part 2: goo.gl/9NDBf6
Part 1: goo.gl/hfxLZL
Yo after all these years I feel really bad for getting this version bootleg. Bilal would have been crazy crazy successful if that album would have come out commercially. Not that he isn't already but more people would probably know who he is.
Dr dre left his stamp on STR8 WEST COAST by KNOCCTURNAL the wash soundtrack
I hate bullies and ppl who takes advantage of good hearted ppl and females REMEMBER God watching everything🇪🇪🇪🇨🇫🇯🇫🇴🇫🇲🇫🇮🇪🇷🇨🇼🇬🇩🇬🇦🇬🇮🇨🇺
yeah
What does the flags have to do with your statement?
it stand for something u wouldn't understand💯
Does anyone have this album???!!!
Get Tony Maiden and/or Bobby Watson of Rufus on here, Vlad
I'm actually smart and intelligent and the dead rip shawty low fuck rehab love u lil Cuz
The stolen album was incredible.
So Dilla and Dr Dre was gonna out the finishing touches on white turns to grey
Vlad the GOAT for asking about the song "fast lane'
'another drdre production' I always wondered about that .
How did it get bootlegged?
...Bilal is so over this shit.
Mike Epps
Bros a monster
21 Savage with Schooling, Soul, Spirit, Sophistication And Without facial tattoos?
i cant get past this stupid james harden in a hoodie commercial
.
So what they bootlegged it
You could've been getting paid off shows
D Wise This wasn't a concept when that happened to him... The digital bootleg was still a new threat, Amber nobody saw the advantage that could be taken of it. To be honest, the drill and mumble rappers are the first to truly profit from it. They put out music for free and get paid strictly for the shows... And what they would've been getting paid if they were a chart topper. In the beginning, artists and labels were in too much of a frenzy tryna figure how to stop it, instead of tryna figure out how it could be manipulated in their favor.
Ilu Ha-Binah El I feel you
But even Biggie said it himself on the rap documentary the show that the real money comes from doing shows
I would've just looked at the bootleg man as pub
And even Bilal started working with it even though he didn't understand it
All he said was it grew a life of it's own
Probably meaning he realized pub is pub the only one who loses out on bootlegs is really the record company not the artist
Why mike Epps quitting music
This dude is so monotone and sleepy sounding. Not chill, just almost sounds like he doesn't wanna be talking. Not hatin, never heard of him before I just enjoy watching vlad interviews
His name is Bilal & this is always his tone.
His Music Speaks for him. He's that dope of an Artist
Get familiar
Sam Music please do your research lol he’s literally a walking legend
Sam Music people that "know" about Bilal, KNOW, both amongst fans and within the industry (check out the countless features with Bilal, from Jay-Z to Beyonce to Common to Dilla to Erykah Badu to his close friend Robert Glasper (whom he's collabed with on majority of each other's albums from the beginning) etc etc. Well respected! He's a very introverted cat, but his musical prowess is fierce. RUclips any of his live performances as well
cant u see vlad just makin fun of this dude
Bilal has to have amazing stories but he’s so fucking dry it’s hard to watch these videos hoping he drags out a gem
DaS718 he a totally different person when he’s performing
DaS718 He has to be least charismatic artist I've ever listened to yet he is immensely talented.
Jimmy Watts have you ever seem him perform lol lol he’s one of the best lol your speaking nonsense
He’s so spaced out.
Unsubscribing... now you're putting lame ass rappers. Rap is dead.
old_school_4ever i don’t think anyone cares
he a singer from the early 2000s
old_school_4ever when did bilal ever rap?
Stop lying
