If one of the main selling points is perfection of finish, then you'd surely expect quite a drop. You really don't want scratches on a GS, certainly not someone else's.
People will complain either way. Either Rolex prices are too high and hard to get or it can be too undervalued and too available. Same is for any other brand. There are some GS models that have gone up but they were more limited models. Other still available in the store, why would they?
It's because fundamentally, Rolex is a marketing company not a technical watchmaking company. They're core competence is building a perception of social status. That's why technical excellence by grand Seiko doesn't matter.
All this brand equity bs: call it what it is: snob value. I’ve got far more time for Seiko as a company than Rolex. They make extremely reliable time pieces that look good at all price points. I’m interested in engineering quality not marketing.
Without question GS is superbly made and highest quality. But the designs are at best derivative and boring. I also find the oddly Gothic looking GS logo, weird and incongruous.
Perhaps they should create a waiting list?

It's strange that Rolex should have this status - their production is huge, so it's hardly as if the supply is limited.

Absolutely…

is it something as simple as sharing the name with a cheap ass watch tarnishing its percieved value?

However stunning the watches, I have to agree ref logo. Very strange.
