As a relatively new (550 miles) owner of a Ducati 1100 Scrambler, I now see the advantages of watching videos made by riders with zero pre-conceptions about the bike they are reporting on (not reviewing). Andy's direct experience closely matches mine on the Scrambler -wonderful sound, plenty of power for it's intended use, great fun in the corners, gorgeous looks, serious vibrations and after a decent period riding, serious knee pain. I've watched half a dozen 1100 Scrambler reviews and have not seen those last two observations mentioned or even implied (and both can be corrected). Good on 'ya Andy.
Old video i know. But you can hear the dreaded front cylinder piston slap, very metallic. There is a Ducati service call to exchange the cylinder head and piston 👍
I’ll take your word for it. Thankfully it was a rental so it wasn’t my problem!! We did have 2 scrambler 800‘s that suddenly didn’t want to change gear on this trip though. Worrying!!
Thats the Garmin VIRB 360. Once you see the price and the faff involved with using the video, you might change your mind!! I for one am glad That i had to send it back after this trip!! Looks cool though! 😂
so for comparison, how long did it take for your knees to get sore on the Versys? I'm only 5'10" and it usually takes about 3 hours for my knees to remind me that the Versys doesn't have that much legroom. I also appreciate the brap factor of the Versys, especially when its resonating off canyon walls, I also have a two brothers exhaust on mine with basically no baffle (yay for living in a US state with lax noise standards). Coming down from Independence pass down into Aspen, CO was truly magical as your up against a rock wall for most of the ride down.
I'd say it was often perfectly timed with the need to pee and fuel up! So about 250km or 2.5 to 3hrs. Of course being a little less young, prancing about in the twisties mean less arse pain but more knee strain!
I believe that has the Pirelli MT60 RS tires, correct? How did you like them? I've considered them for my Versys, which has sport touring tires that are helpless on gravel roads I often find here in the mountains.
That sounds familiar. I was really surprised by them actually. I was chucking that thing into the bends with wild abandon, trying to keep up with an S1000R and the only times it lost traction was when I hit the brakes too hard and locked up the front wheel a couple of times! But even then it was just a little slip, under control and the show continued. Of course this was all in the dry. NO idea about wet and even less of a clue for the odd off road excursion!
rehis692000 I just bought myself today Monster 1100 (2009) with 95hp and it has wet weight just around 190kg, so I suppose it should be better bike for the rode than mt 09. I was choosing between mt-09, z 900 however was able to find monster in great condition for good money after first owner.
Great editing, commentary and scenery. Really is a very professional job. 👍 Also, honest comments about the bikes, rather than the usual journalist banal comments to ensure they get invited back.
That was a hoot, Andy, and we all know that loan/demo/hire bikes are the fastest, don't we. I actually thought that the BMW sounded better but I could sense that the Ducati may have been more 'alive'. But what a great opportunity to roadtest all these bikes in such stunning terrain. I've said it before: you are one lucky SOB! 👍
Oh yes they are!! In the flesh, the Ducati sounded much more raw than I think it comes across on the audio. The recorder was stuffed into my rucksack after all! :D It was a truly unbelievable opportunity Keith. Even if it is never repeated I'll still have been exceptionally lucky!
looks like a nice bike although doesnt seem very smooth.. love to get your take on some of the british retro's with the triumph 1200 scrambler coming out next year.. a good comparison ride would be great..good show
John Moore Yeah it certainly wasn’t smooth. Very unrefined and brash style. But for the ride it was perfect for smiles!! We’ll have to wait and see if I get a go on some more retros in the future.
What a blast! That Scrambler exhaust growl sounded awesome! It's shame that it was cramped after a bit, you seemed to have a fondness for it. Just curious, was it annoyingly "vibey" through the bars or pegs after while? Great video as always Andy.
It sid, didn't it! Just imagine hiw it sounded in the flesh! Very satisfying. And that with stock system! I didn't really have any trouble with the vibes tbh. They where definitely there, but from my experience, V-twins always seem to have a more friendly 'rounded' of vibration! (if that makes ANY sense!). So no issues with numb hands or arse.
After the recent RNineT fiasco, I started out concentrating on your gear shift technique and riding........ for all off 1 second before actually watching the video for the great content you produce! (any kind of comments/discussion/feedback gets the videos pushed/noticed on the RUclips algorithms doesn't it?) On a serious note though, great video Andy as always. Looked like you really got on well from and enjoyed the Scrambler from the off compared to the RNineT. Would you say it'd be a Sunday blast bike than an everyday bike for you?
Thanks mate. Good to see some people seeing the important stuff! 😂 We'll have to wait and see what vitriol this one attracts when it goes public! I definitely felt a lot more at home on the Ducati mate. It was instantly familiar feeling and a lot of fun to ride. I think touring on one wouldn't be too far fetched of an idea and as an every day bike too. It was a really tractible engine and Eas to throw around. So twisties OR traffic would be no trouble. I only got uncomfortable because of the total time riding and the slightly too tight pegs. But nothing some aftermarket parts and more frequent rest stops wouldn't fix to have that enjoyment level!
Andy Man at the Andy Man GP, showing off his impeccable cornering and tunnel brapping. That was sweet, Andy. The Ducati really looks like a nice bike. P.S. The big KTM adventure bikes would be right up your street, legwise.
Have you ridden the recent 1290 Adventure S or the 1090 Adventure S? They're pretty amazing bikes. And did you get a a chance to try out Likeable Rider's Super Duke GT? Or is increasing fame and age pushing you towards a GS with heated seats and a portable microwave? 😜
I watched this video two years ago and left a comment criticising the clocks, bars and the routing of the throttle cable. I have deleted it as my tastes appear to have changed. More recently I have watched several of your current videos and subscribed. I told you I was tenuously interested in a CB1000R in northern Thailand. But maybe this would suit me better. Punchy delivery, reliable engine [it's been around forever]. Instead of buying your CB1000R, could you have been tempted by a Scrambler 1100?
Sure! I did consider it. Eventually i decided that, although immense fun, the coarseness of the motor would be tiresome on longer tours. And considering that every tour for me starts and finishes with about 4 hours of motorway, the Honda was the clear winner in the refinement stakes. Also i just really liked the style of the CB over anything else out there right now. Retro enough to be cool, modern enough to be current and sporty enough to be fun!
@@AndyManCam I can see why you went with the CB. It is the best-looking bike there is. But just like the best-looking women, the best-looking bikes are not always the most fun. I'll let you know what I end up buying, Andy. Regards, Nick
Nice one sir. It's a Ducati thing is their gearboxes, clunky as hell, neutral has to found whilst moving. (I've got the Diavel ) But being 164cm, cramped is something I've never experienced on anything 😀
Cheers Robin. Certainly seems normal for the brand! 3 of the 4 scramblers actually had shifting problems of some kind during the day. 1 even had to go back down to the workshop for a timeout!
Yeah it seems low. But TBH when I rode it, I didn't know the specs and it felt like lots more. If anything it felt more spritely than the RnineT (Best watch out, the fanboys might find me here too!) despite 25 less ponies in the stall. The Torque is in a very useable place too. All midrange. My Versys 650 taught me that the numbers on paper and how the bike feels can be miles off from each other.
Thanks very much! It was hard not to enjoy it! SUCH a blast to ride!! And my first ever Ducati experience too. I had the Lasagne and a Tiramisu. Bellissimo!
How come? I used to believe I'd never get there either. When I first got my bike license, northern France was like an adventure to the other side of the world! But now I've been twice!
Power is subjective but the 86 HP is way less than the BMW at 110 HP. I’m not sure that is a fair comparison. Although 88 on such a light bike is ok I wouldn’t want to be out accelerated by a new Harley or any other 1100 for crap sake. Ducati really needs to do some homework in this engine.
You’re overlooking the other aspect of how the power feels, and that the delivery. Obviously much of it will be ‚louder=faster‘! But the delivery of the power on the Ducati is fat at the bottom and easy to use. Maybe on longer, smoother stretches, the Scrambler might have felt breathless and weak, but in these tight curves it was a delight.
Hard for me to say Jake. They were both tested by that awful surface on the roads of the Stelvio but I didn't really manage to think about it too carefully in the short time I had. Though I was instantly more confident on the Ducati. Read into that what you will!
Maybe in terms of feeling. Though I’d say that the scrambler is mich more of a pseudo-scrambler. Far more modern styling and no attempt to force chrome parts on where they serve no real purpose!!
Aah mate, I really feel for you having to ride that road again on yet another of those beautiful brand spankers bikes, in all your blingy brand spankers gear. You poor poor thing! :)
I agree, on paper. But in use, it certainly didn't feel underpowered. For low end grunt and tractability, it was great. Sure it lacked the rush of the S1000, but you didn't have to constantly keep the revs up to enjoy riding it. I had a Fazer 600 with 95hp, but this Ducati felt WAY more powerful because of how usable the power is.
Ah, the curse of the tall man. I feel your pain in the literal sense mate. Great video as always and insane jealousy is with me. Never been a Ducati man whatsoever but looks like a lot of fun.
Thanks mate. Yeah it's literally a pain being tall sometimes! I've never really been about the Ducati's either. I can appreciate them from afar, but never wanted a go on one. But the larger and less sporty offerings like this and the Diavel were the first to turn my head.
In the short space of time i had, absolutely! Though i couldn’t rule out the RnineT completely. Just seemed to need a bit more time to get used to its ‘nuances’!

Does it has a quickshifter? I didn't see you use the clutch.
I don’t think so. I think i was clutchless shifting.

Yes mate! It was fantastic fun!
great ride sir! got mine yesterday coming from an mt09 and i could say torque is livelier on this one in the midrange.
