about the ranger class: i finally read laserllama's ranger. its a homebrew rework of the class by someone named laserllama. if you like the class, please, look it up. its everything i and many other people wanted out of the ranger. even the subclasses, like the horizon walker, were touched on. its amazing.
I'm glad Ranger has good subclasses. I think a good DM being willing to "play along" and let you use your 'toys' definitely helps, but that's a given for ALL classes.
Just finished a campaign where I played a Horizon Walker and let me tell you that Distant Strike is on of the best features in the game bar none. The mobility is second to none and lets you become the greatest kite 5e can make. If you have a sword and crossbow combo (like I did), it means you can teleport in to make melee strikes and then teleport *away* from your enemy to make a ranged attack, then run away with impunity. I know YMBA labeled it a fault of the subclass that it favors both focus fire and spread damage, but I think the versatility is this class's greatest strength. You're a planar wanderer, moving through a myriad of different lands with different creatures. You need to be prepared for everything. Planar Warrior lets you focus fire big hulking elementals when you need to, and Distant Strike lets you plow through hordes of undead. Being able to do both and switch your entire combat style on the fly is so incredibly valuable and not many other classes/subclasses let you do that. Flying enemy? Distant Strike teleport upwards to vantage points and take potshots with a ranged weapon. Wave Combat? Distant Strike blink through the crowd as a walking AOE. Your extra mobility from base ranger abilities and access to Haste along with proficiency in every weapon means you can be a melee fighter, a kite, or a ranged attacker whenever you want. In my campaign, being able to choose between kiting and darting into melee saved my character's life more times than I can count. Adapting to the flow of combat was so much fun and made this subclass worth playing.
You could have some fun roleplay opportunities having this one run into a Fey Wanderer Ranger. Sharing stories, getting a friendly rivalry going, or even getting a personal nemesis.
Perfect timing. Gearing up for a planescape campaign where one of my characters is going to be a horizon walker/monk multiclass. ( Monk subclass undecided, we're starting at lvl 5 so 3 lvls ranger 2 lvls monk)
When I run games for a Horizon Walker I swap a few things around. For starters, I beg them to use a rework of ranger I made that replaces hunter's mark, favored creature types, and favored terrains with the mana colors from Magic the Gathering. At levels 1, 6, 14, 20, and when they pick their subclass, they pick one color of mana from white, blue, black, red, green, or colorless. Their mana pick gives them their int mod in languages, advantage on dex, int, and wis checks tied to anything tied to their mana colors, one additional damage die on weapon attacks against creatures tied to their mana colors, and overland tavel buffs. When it comes to the Horizon Walker itself, I make it so planar warrior deals the bonus damage once each turn and only eats up a bonus action if you want to turn all your damage into force damage until your next turn. This brings the class in line with the Tasha's classes. I also switch the level 7 and 11 subclass features and make the Etherealness feature just give a full casting of the spell rather than a nerfed 6-second version. The main thing I give them is portal routes. Horizon Walkers know a number of paths to take through multiple portals equal to their Int score. Each route will take the ranger through a series of 6 to 10 portals, but they all end at different key locations. For a primer on what that may look like, read the Jim Butcher Dresden Files book "Changes" or go watch the 90s Sat am cartoon Mighty Max. In each setting, I give each Ranger conclave safe houses and training camps. For most Rangers, these places let the Ranger restock and update their maps at the cost of letting the conclave map guy copy all the PC Ranger's maps. For Horizon Walkers, the map guy takes in and gives out portal locations and known portal routes.
_"Jim Butcher Dresden Files book "Changes""_ Going through a portal in the FBI building and winding up in basically the Wild Hunt's dining hall was one of the funniest moments in that book.
Every time he accidentally ran into the Goblin King was funny. He spends like 8 books worried about opening portals in unknown locations. Then he gets his mom's memory stone, and he knows it's only 6 portals and 40 meters of walking to get from Chicago to the central American jungle pyramids where the vampire lords are holding their death ritual. The portal mechanic in the old Mighty Max cartoon worked pretty much the same way. Max got his magic portal hat and every episode was a Horizon Walker style adventure. The only hard to get through portals were the entrance and exit portals to the underdark lava zone the main bad guy was stuck in for the first half of the series. The one portal down to hell was fine, but to leave hell they had to ride something down a river of lava and fall over a lavafall, jumping at just the right moment to hit the only exit portal in hell. That portal dumped them out next to Ayers Rock in the Australian outback where someone would inevitably joke about the nearest portal being a ten mile walk away. After tier two or so I'll just tell Horizon Walkers in an unknown location to roll a d10 and see how many portals they are away from Sigil. They found the portal in Sigil that drops them within a mile of their home base at the end of tier one. I'll reserve one route they have to take regularly that still has a ten mile walk towards the end. Realistically, if the party has a Horizon Walker, that's the fast travel route they are getting all the perks from instead of getting their own Airship or Spaceship. It's that big of a campaign shaping decision that is up to the players.
This subclass with the Giff race is my all time favorite character. Pair the HW's teleportation with the Giff's ability to forgo reloading firearms, makes for a Spicy Space Hippo
I have an Oath of the Watcher Paladin 8 who went Horizon Walker Ranger, mostly for pure flavor, but they synergize so well together and it is a lot of fun to play!
Interesting. I think it's the worst one by far mechanically 30ft limit on Planar Warrior means you're more or less stuck in melee and you can't use Polearm Master, Crossbow Expert, Great Weapon Master or even dual wield. Also it means you can't use it and Hunter's Mark, Zephyr Strike, Ensnaring Strike, Searing Smite, or any of the other amazing Ranger Bonus Action spells Misty Step sounds nice, but then it shuts off your 3rd and 7th level features because it eats up the same Bonus Action Also the 3rd and 7th level features can't be used on the same turn And Haste competes with Conjure Animals for your 3rd level slots and concentration while being utterly inferior to it in every way. (Also it actively harms you in terms of number of attacks until round 3)
The idea that they're not only interdimensional park rangers, they're interdimensional MIB? They're my second favorite group of rangers right behind the Drakewarden
Imagine as a fun character story quirk that you are a horizon walker (HW for short) that has no control of when and/or where you end up walking plane jumping too. Now you are stuck that plane until you kick out every outsider who is not supposed to be there so you can just get back to your home chill... Well until this random hole opens up and sucks you in again. Story short: There you are one Saturday night just chilling like a boss and is about fall asleep. Then suddenly a black whirlwind like hole opens up right above you that sucks you in like kurby and the next thing you know you are face first in the mud outside some random tavern on a different damn plane. Worst part is that this is not the first time it happens. It always seems to happen just as you are finally setting in to this new plane after the previous job was done. No warnings, no goodbye to the friends and/or family you made. To them you just dissappear out of their lives and yourself has no idea of this. Imagine how awkward it would be if you suddenly came back to a plane you left. For them it could have been years while for you it was just last Thursday. 🤣
yep sums it up prefect, lots of really fun features that just don't quite synergize but still fun to play. I just wish Distant Strike had a "or after" in it's wording,

Love this series! I assume you're waiting for the 2024 Player's Handbook to fully release before covering the new/tweaked subclasses? I'd love to see how some of these topics you've covered before would be revised or recontextualised with the new rules.
Realistically, Two-Weapon Fighting is actually the worst fighting style a Horizon Walker could have: Horizon Walkers have to use their Planar Warrior EVERY turn to keep up the extra damage, meaning they can't use their bonus action for the off-handed attack. Also, your third attack from Distant Strike has to be aimed at a third creature. Still pretty good, especially with the teleport ability, though the Hunter can do similar between its two multiattack features and technically can even double back to hit one guy twice. For being the "base" subclass of a criminally underpowered class, Hunter is surprisingly good.
The lack of focus makes sense. What if a pack of small animals came from another plane. Being able to do one big hit doesn't really matter. One big animal, spreading your attacks makes no sense. The movement could be useful in the sense of hunting them down, or positioning themselves so they have an advantage position. They need to be prepared for numerous situations which fits perfectly.
I still think Vanish and Hide in Plain Sight should be swapped but other then that this may be the most interesting of all the Ranger subclasses to me aside from Drakewarden
That's the thing, though, it's _not._ Aragon could actually tell where the orcs were and what direction they ran. Literally all Primeval Awareness does is answer the question *"Are any of these seven creature types within a mile of you, Y/N?"* Crucially, by RAW, it doesn't say anything about how many there are, or even what direction they're in. And it's actually worse if you're in your favored terrain and the range is 6 miles. You could stand in Pasadena, activate Primeval Awareness, and if there's any of those creatures (whether it's a single nesting pseudodragon or a massive horde of demons) in the Greater Los Angeles area...all the info you would get is "yes!" That's why Horizon Walker is a good workaround, since Detect Portal at least has a chance of telling you where the creature(s) might be.
Sorry, sitting here with my mind blown that Horizon Walker actually makes Primeval Awareness _worth_ something. It's not completely redemptive, since there's a ton of things you can detect with PA that _aren't_ directly planar in origin (aberrations, dragons, and undead are notably Material), but it's still an incredible non-DM fiat patch on that worthless feature. Though really, if I were to fix it more as a DM, I'd probably give the "6 miles in your favored terrain" treatment to Detect Portal, and make it so an anomalous number of creatures hang out near planar portals (undead near Shadowfell/Negative Energy portals, dragons near related elemental portals, etc.).

Never liked the theme of this class from both 3.5 or 5E. Just didn't seem interesting to me. Not bad compared to Monster Hunter, but not great either. Just decent for being a plane jumper or investigator type of character
The overall problem with the Subclass is the Rangers inherent need to some form of concentration effect. If wizards wanted to fix this class the best suggestion would be to remove concentration from some of the ranger spells or give a class feature that let us have two effects active at the same time. That simple addition would sky-rocket the Rangers' usefulness in the campaign and make it so they're no longer the butt of every Dnd class meme out there
rangers are strong enough, You guys just cant read, they are better then fighters paladins rogues barbarians monks They have an amazing spell list (conjure animals, entangle, plant growth, good berry, conjure woodland beings for chwingas) especially with spellcasters being better then martials, spellcasting is busted, and the paladin spell list is okay, but they are locked into melee and melee is worse to be in then ranged you look at a few features and "ranger bad"
I understand that much. The problem though is that ranger's power creep far too slowly throughout a campaign and they have too many spells effects that either require concentration or take up one of their many bonus actions to do. In the horizon walkers case it's not as bad but the other subclasses can feel really underpowered because of it.
I don't get why you bring up two weapon fighting? This subclass is very much a bow subclass since the bonus action is needed for the bonus damage. With how many subclasses and species getting teleports this subclass loses some of its uniqueness. And with bows falling behind in 5.24 it's hard to keep up with scimitars.

IMO, this is the best ranger subclass. It's thematic and has great abilities.

How to play in 5e-2024?
Horizon Wlaker???
Never liked the theme of this class from both 3.5 or 5E. Just didn't seem interesting to me. Not bad compared to Monster Hunter, but not great either. Just decent for being a plane jumper or investigator type of character
The overall problem with the Subclass is the Rangers inherent need to some form of concentration effect. If wizards wanted to fix this class the best suggestion would be to remove concentration from some of the ranger spells or give a class feature that let us have two effects active at the same time.
That simple addition would sky-rocket the Rangers' usefulness in the campaign and make it so they're no longer the butt of every Dnd class meme out there
rangers are strong enough, You guys just cant read, they are better then

paladins
rogues
barbarians
monks
They have an amazing spell list (conjure animals, entangle, plant growth, good berry, conjure woodland beings for chwingas) especially with spellcasters being better then martials, spellcasting is busted, and the paladin spell list is okay, but they are locked into melee and melee is worse to be in then ranged

I understand that much. The problem though is that ranger's power creep far too slowly throughout a campaign and they have too many spells effects that either require concentration or take up one of their many bonus actions to do. In the horizon walkers case it's not as bad but the other subclasses can feel really underpowered because of it.

I don't get why you bring up two weapon fighting? This subclass is very much a bow subclass since the bonus action is needed for the bonus damage. With how many subclasses and species getting teleports this subclass loses some of its uniqueness. And with bows falling behind in 5.24 it's hard to keep up with scimitars.
The worst Ranger
A Ranger who is WAY too specific and doesnt give enough reward for any other scenarios
