2024: This was one of my first videos I made 6 years ago, and it turns out the EasyCap is pretty terrible. I've been trying to make an updated capture video for a while now but haven't gotten around to making it. There are better videos on RUclips that exist than mine, until I get around to producing a new video.
Dude, VERY nice and professional video. This was more clear and concise that 99% of the adult instructional videos out there. Perfectly detailed where it needed to be. EXCELLENT job. And THANK YOU. You saved me $100's.
I can't agree with this comment more. Straight and to the point! OMG, please teach some of the adults how to create videos! Outstanding! You are going places!
The very first thing I thought of was “please don’t let this be some kid doing a tutorial” well, I was wrong! This kid was amazing! Clear precise directions! Well done 👍🏼
Kyle you are my freaking hero man!!!!! I have 8mm videos from 2000-2003 of my daughters when they were babies and had no idea how to convert them. I bought a similar converter here in Canada and followed your directions. A few things were different because I'm on a mac but I am so excited it worked. I panicked for a minute because there wasn't sound but I got it figured out. Your video was so clear and was done so well unlike many many many others out there! Thank you so so much!!!
Maybe someone else caught this, but I'll re-state it anyway as I just found this out the hard way. At 3:34 under the "Mixer" tab, make sure to turn BOTH the "Mic/Aux" AND "Desktop Audio" mics to the "off" position, and only have the "Video Capture Device" mic on. Otherwise any audio being played on your computer and any noise in the same room (people speaking, a television playing in the background, etc.) will end up in the digital conversion of the 8mm tape along with the original audio from the tape. I was wondering why I could hear audio from a current tennis match playing in the background of tapes of my young adult children from when they were toddlers. No, it wasn't some "Back To The Future" phenomenon, just me having all three mics turned on...
Note that the resolution suggested in this video may need to be changed according to your device. When I used 720×480 pixels as suggested by this video, some of my camera was cut off. Hence I changed the resolution to 720×576 in the OBS Studio source properties which fixed the issue. However, this may be different for everybody so definitely look into it. Besides this, this video was really helpful and easy to follow.
Exceptional video, Kyle! Thank you for the brief and clear instructions! You are AMAZING! Also, thank you for providing an inexpensive way to reformat priceless family videos into a modern medium. I'm now a subscriber, Kyle!
Dude....? You're like maybe 13 but you have better production than literally 90% of youtube. Better than adults who have money for high quality gear. The audio was good, your voice over was good, and the information was good. HOW? HOW DO YOU DO THIS AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE?!
I watched this video to learn how to digitize tapes from my childhood that have been sitting around the house for years. I’m super relieved that the footage will be preserved now if anything were to happen to the tapes and I can even show them to my future kids one day. Thank you so much!
Just wanted to say, that you are great. I have been watching videos for days trying to figure out how to get my video to come up and all I needed was this program. You are a life saver. Great job and your parents have to be super proud of you. I'm glad I ran up on your video. Thank you so, so , so much. Now I can capture 40 years of family videos and save them to my computer. I have subscribed to your channel.
Thank you!!! This is the best, most detailed, video on the subject! Now our family will be able to watch videos from 15-20 years ago, including video of loved ones that are no longer with us. PRICELESS!! Very good job young man!
Thank you for this. I was losing so much time trying to make my TVR honestech software to work but everything worked perfectly once I tried OBS studio. One of the most helpful tutorial I've seen in a long while. Subbed!
SOLUTION TO SOUND ISSUES - This is how I got sound to work on mine: - Right click on your Video Capture Device source and select Properties. - Scroll to the bottom of the options until you get to Audio Output Mode. - Try all 3 options. The one that worked for me was Output desktop audio (WaveOut) --> DirectSound also works, but then a thumping sound starts - Be sure to check Use custom audio device and select OEM (AV to USB2.0 in my case). Hope this helps!
dazcha tried your solution and every time I clicked on use custom audio source with anything but capture audio it turned the video signal black and showed nothing
I can't wait to get started on my tapes!! You are a PRO at presenting information and it was encouraging to me that there is a way to get my video memories saved digitally and that I can understand how to do it because you did a great job!
Good job, i have only 1 video of my mom and dad that have both passed, and now with your instructions i can make this into a digital copy and save it on my computer. While ill have to learn how, i can now edit that copy to make small videos and send to other family members ... So Thank You !!
Excellent video! You explained this process very well. This was very professional and a lot better than most "How To" videos on RUclips, especially considering it is a bit complex.
This is a great video well done on the tutorial I have about 20 of these tapes at two hours each and over a six month period I converted them to DVD with my Song DVD Recorder (live a VHS Recorder) then I took the DVD and converted it to a digital file. Once I had the file I cut each of the dates into separate files added a fade in and fade out and then converted them back to DVD with a menu as a Christmas Gift for my Father and Mother. Again this took about six months of time and was a blast to see all of the home movies from when I was growing up.
I'm so glad I came across this video! I bought the converter from the description of the video and it works great-- but only on my Windows XP computer. I tried and tried to get this to work on Windows 10 and it just refused despite my extensive troubleshooting. Thankfully I recently setup an older machine with a copy of XP and this product worked exactly as expected, plug and play. The software included with mine was updated from what was given to download here, but it worked just the same. Unfortunately OBS isn't compatible with XP, so I had to use the bundled software, but it's honestly been working fine for my needs. After I record the footage on the XP machine, I transfer it to a thumb drive and have been editing it on my main computer. With all that said, I'm really glad I came across this video! Thanks for the tutorial Kyle!
Great Job Kyle, appreciate your effort...Much more informative and clear than most instructionals out there...and no obnoxious youtube stock track instead of an actual persons voice..well done! alot of people who have purchased easycap thru amazon are very confused how to use it...i posted your video link in a comment.... maybe bump your numbers...aloha! thanks braddah!
That would have to have been the most easiest to follow video I have ever watched. You are an amazing kid and really know your stuff. Well done to you and thank you.
Kyle, you are amazing!!! Thank you for posting this video! You did an excellent job with your explanations. I’m planning on trying this and hopefully it will save us a lot of money!! Keep up the great work!
I wish I saw this comment a month ago before purchasing another seemingly identical USB converter that only seems to work with it's own proprietary software (CyberLink PowerDirector). It works but is clunky, doesn't allow for .mp4 files without upgrading, and wouldn't run in the background which prevented me from surfing YT during file conversions due to the audio always being heard. Kyle, you're a good man! Thanks!
Clever kid Kyle for making this video 5 years ago 😅 nice tutorial. I have some EasyCap devices from back in 2009 or 2010 and they were hopeless at capturing colour but maybe those will work with your drivers or the ones on the market now are more reputable. I have an old Hauppauge HD PVR which may do an equally decent job too however not sure whether it imports into OBS too good. I remember screen capturing the window of the software if I ever wanted to stream with OBS
Fantastic video dude. Very informative and clear. Good job. First time I've watched one of your vids and it was a very simple LIKE and SUB. I have managed to convert over 8 hours of VHS to digital now and many more to do. Thanks again.
I watched your video and bought your recommendations. You did more to help me preserve my home videos than I could have done on my own. Thanks for your great guide.
Well done Kyle, few years ago now, but, I am tasked with copying 8mm tapes of some deceased family members, real keepsake gems. I have done this before but thorough a Canopus device on a 2011 iMac, I have a fast PC now and MacMini, but I like the simplicity of the Easy Cap, cheers.
Hi, you definitely need the s-video output. Then you have separated chroma and luminance. That is the intention of a Hi8 Camera or recorder. So do not use the yellow plug for video but use the separate s-video cable. The usb capture has that connection. Chroma and luma separated gives more detail in the image and no interference in the colors. Try it!
Great video! This helped me save the only video recording I had of my daughter when she was only 1 year old. And, I agree with previous commenters. Your video was very professionally done! Kudos.
Wow, thanks Kyle. I've been thinking about this and wondering what kind of sorcery I would need to employ for this. I appreciate the step by step tutorial, I'm going to start the process today! Nice work, thanks much!
Some of the better options that Kyle mentions in the description might include these: Basic method - Sharp or Toshiba VHS VCR from the mid 1990s - Composite video cable (and audio cables) - Hauppauge USB-Live2 capture device, or IO Data GV-USB2 capture device, or ATI TV Wonder 600, or MiniDV camcorder with S-Video in and Firewire out Medium method - Super-VHS VCR (Panasonic and JVC were the main makers of these) - S-Video cable (and audio cables) - Panasonic ES10 or ES15 to be used in passthrough mode as a Line TBC - Hauppauge USB-Live2 capture device, or IO Data GV-USB2 capture device, or ATI TV Wonder 600, or MiniDV camcorder with S-Video in and Firewire out Advanced method - Super-VHS VCR with the built-in Line TBC feature - S-Video cable (and audio cables) - Frame TBC in the workflow (eg, DataVideo TBC-1000, AV Tool AVT-8710, Leitch DPS 575) - BrightEye 75 HD/SD Analog to SDI Converter with TBC/FS, or Singmai SM03, or AJA Kona LHi - PCI card with SDI input
Really great video!! I spent all day yesterday trying to convert my tapes, but the old software only converted them to .AVI (2 mins of video were 2.51 GB!!!) and then I finally found this and all my problems were solved! Thank you (:
I bought the device to convert the tapes last year it’s the same as yours and never got round to converting Thanks for this video as wasn’t looking forward to trying myself You made it look easy and you explained it very well Thank you
Wow! Thank you! I've been looking for a way to do this with old videos. I'm going to order the part and get started on it as soon as Amazon delivers it.
If the tapes were recorded in a Hi 8 camera it's recommended to use the S Video socket and lead, not the yellow composite connection as shown. The reason is the S Video connection was designed to handle the extra picture detail in Hi 8 recordings. The red and white audio connectors are fine for either Video 8 or Hi 8.
I got some old 8`s hanging around, PLUS I just got an old HI 8 Hitachi was wondering how to do it. Thanks for making it simple. Will be holding off till after the "HORROR DAYS 2024" basically be 2025. But hey the video lays out the first steps for me to be aligned to do so thanks again.
Thank you 🙏🏻 so very much !!! My daughter is 23 and I have 20 8mm tapes... your video/instructions are super 👏🏻 awesome. I’m very excited to try this ...thank you for all of your efforts...keep up the great tech work 🤙🏻
Hey Kyle! You're tutorial is awesome and I hope I can digitize all my videos :) My only suggestion would be to find a more reputable seller to link to for the EasyCap DC60. When I got my order, the dvd looked fake (a white dvd with a blue panda) rather than the yellow one with serial key shown on Amazon and your tutorial. Also, when I installed it, it installed ArcSoft ShowBiz.... we'll see how it goes!
I know this 8mm converter vid is a bit old but I really need some help. I have almost the same camera, only difference I notice is that it uses aux instead of RCA. So I bought a aux to RCA (triple threaded aux) and I can get audio, but no video. The cable and the converter itself is new. Then in OBS I can get things to pop up like in your video, it won't show the options for configure video nor will the configure crossbar pop up. If you could see this do you have any ideas what to do?
So I know im a bit late.....but,looking through this tutorial amazed me from what you have presented!Im surprised that you know one of this Old technology!keep it up!👏
Using RCA out for video gives you only medium-grade quality. It's better to buy on eBay a camcorder with a DV (digital) output AND a converter from that into USB (so your computer can understand the digital DV output, older Mac computers used to have a digital DV input (called "Firewire" or "IEEE 1394"), and if you have a way to add an extra card to your PC, you can still buy a Firewire card for peanuts). And now that you have a fully digital connection, you can use your preferred video editing program to capture the content: FinalCut, Adobe, etc. The above especially applies if your video tapes happen to be in a _native digital format_ like DV or D8. Then you can copy the videos without _any_ loss of quality using direct digital.
Great Video Kyle however I have a small problem... At 2.28 It doesn't show me anything in the device dropdown box apart from my HD webcam. Am I right in assuming that my connection is not being picked up by my windows pc.. Any suggestions would be great cheers Anton
I follow all the steps but have an issue: When I go to add the video capture device, "OEM Device" is not an option. I have installed the software from the EasyCap CD zip file link in the description. I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times. It shows my current cameras, but never the "OEM Device" - the only thing that I can think of that may be different is that my Sharp camcorder only has one out for the Audio/Video cable. It is a one male end that goes into the camera, and a yellow and red males that go into the TV or the EasyCap in this instance. Everything else is exactly step by step that I have followed. (I also get an error message every once in a while that says "Windows does not recognize the last USB device". I imagine there are multiple possibilities as to why this is not working, but I am just about done trying to figure it out.) Great video, I just wish I wasn't the only one having an apparent problem with such easy instructions.
Really good video. Straight forward and to the point. Just ordered a Sony Hi8 cam corder cause I've got some tapes I want to convert to digital. Exciting times and good memories. Save them before lost forever.
@@graceford2628 Have to be very careful to make sure the Playback function actually works on these cameras! I have the Sony CCD-TR7 and that is what gave out on the cam :(
Even though it's 2022 your vid is very handy, you've explained the setup very well and clear. I have the same converter and downloaded OBS, but somehow only half the screen comes up. I'll follow your steps this time I may have done something wrong thank you for the info!
The clearest and best video Ive seen explaining this. Big man, please help me out tho. I have a chromebook is there anyway I can get it running on there. Please answer back my man
Kyle, you are a master. SO well done and worked 1st time! Question, as you (or someone) indicated, the video files that this creates are HUGE. 7 gig for one, 2-hour home movie. Can you share tips on best ways to compress for storage in cloud and then de-compress for viewing (or other recommended method). Thanks again
Although it does seem like a lot 7 gigs for 2 hours is quiet amazing but if you right click on the file (for mac) it will say compress file and you can compress. I’m not sure if it works for windows but let me know
thank you for this video. I can finally show my brother our mother he doesnt remember from the old tapes i found. She died when he was a baby and has no memory of her and all i have is some old tapes that we cant connect to our modern tv so now i can save them on my pc and show him
Great video. Super understandable and straight to the point. I have the same camcorder that was used to record all sorts of stuff from the late 90s and early 2000s waiting to be converted.
Great instruction, Kyle! Would you please list the additional equipment that is need i.e. the names of the two cords, the app, and the other piece that you mentioned? Thank you!
Where did you provided the “ISO” and by the way I used the zip file in your description to do this, and I also did this with the disk included, neither let me open and install the drivers.

When are you making this video?
What is deinterlace in OBS please?
Is the updated video ready? 🤔

@@shamaalb2259 If I have understood it correctly, I think that is ok. I have the same on my Mac, both desktop audio options are disabled.
Another way to work around thus is to disable your mic and close or pause any videos playing in the background.

Dude. This is an excellent video. Helped me figure out how to convert my old tapes to digital. Thanks! Subscribed.
If the tapes were recorded in a Hi 8 camera it's recommended to use the S Video socket and lead, not the yellow composite connection as shown. The reason is the S Video connection was designed to handle the extra picture detail in Hi 8 recordings. The red and white audio connectors are fine for either Video 8 or Hi 8.
thank you so much for your help brotha! i appreciate everything you put into the making of this! i’m gonna get so much done thanks to you.
I’m very excited to try this ...thank you for all of your efforts...keep up the great tech work 🤙🏻
this video made it so easy to convert some very fond memories and show them again to my parents :) Thank you Kyle2000 !!
Thanks Kyle, this video kicks ass! Gonna use this for my mom's old films, thanks a bunch.
I need to find my Hi8 tapes and camcorder now. Great vid!
OMG dude thank you! My mom has HUNDREDS of hours of tape just sitting in our basement.
Easily one of the best instructional videos I have seen. Great job!!
So I know im a bit late.....but,looking through this tutorial amazed me from what you have presented!Im surprised that you know one of this Old technology!keep it up!👏
awesome video and the background music is a bop
this is literally the best video quick to the point and clear good job 👏🏽
I have over 50 8mm tapes to convert. Thank you very much Kyle.
Thanks kid. I swear I knew how to do this once upon a time, but i must be getting old.
Finally got a PC to do this on and it worked perfectly. Thank you so much :)
Fantastic job!! Best video I’ve watched on transferring videos. Extremely helpful!!!! Bright future for you for sure.
Thanks, Kyle! Well done! I learned everything I needed to know from your video alone.
Great video! Best one I saw about the converting process, goes through all of what I needed.
Thank you for the explanation and will to help :)
2022 and you still saving lives🤝🏾
Thanks. So much better then the other videos I watched on this. Direct and to the point. Thanks
Great Video Kyle however I have a small problem... At 2.28 It doesn't show me anything in the device dropdown box apart from my HD webcam. Am I right in assuming that my connection is not being picked up by my windows pc.. Any suggestions would be great cheers Anton
You forget to mention "Switch the computer on"
Amazing video! Didn't try it yet but it was very well explained and professional. Thank you.
Awesome vid buddy! This is going to make a GREAT christmas present!
I imagine there are multiple possibilities as to why this is not working, but I am just about done trying to figure it out.)
Great video, I just wish I wasn't the only one having an apparent problem with such easy instructions.
Really good video. Straight forward and to the point. Just ordered a Sony Hi8 cam corder cause I've got some tapes I want to convert to digital. Exciting times and good memories. Save them before lost forever.
Mr Japiapian oh wow. Where did you purchase. I’m in canada
Please answer back my man
Better than most of the adults explaining the same thing.
This kid is going places.
No problem.
Thanks Kyle, your instructions were very clear and useful!
To Kyle from another Kyle, thanks for this video man. Will be good to convert old family movies to digital.
You did an excellent job explaining it ! My compliments. Going to try it myself. Thanks for this video
Love that this came in my recommended. Awesome video.
Thanks from New Orleans Kyle. You are the man👍🏼☑️
Very well done video. I don't have my camera yet so I can't try it but I will definitely keep this video in mind when the time comes
Thanks!
