I think the Splatoon 3 edition works a lot better than the other versions - the joy cons have a super unique gradient design, and the "random sticker collection" is a pretty big part of the game's art style.
I was talking about this with my buddy. The regular Switch can’t really do too many good special editions because it’s just a nearly bezel-less screen and joycons (which you can buy different colors of! You can only really change the back and the dock. The Switch Lite, however, has more opportunity. The gold Zelda one. Ugh

They’re supposed to look like the inkling/octoling tentacles with the white backing and texture. But I digress, I’m sure it’s just my bias showing because I love Splatoon.

The switch doesn’t have a startup sound, music or eshop music and it just feels so lifeless in comparison.
The Switch from a design perspective is a boring machine and possibly Nintendo's most boring machine to date. As a home console it lacks the fun features like Mii, background music, etc.. It seems as time goes on after the Wii U/3DS era, there is just less and less content being offered. The menu design is empty and boring compared to the Gamecube, Wii and Wii U. Other modern game console UI are also very boring (PS5/Series). As a handheld it lacks the fun features like Streetpass, minigames, camera, notes, etc.. There was really nothing new and fun to offer with the Switch hardware and software. The menu design is bland and sterile compared to the iconic design style of the DS, and the 3D and sound-interactive effects of the 3DS menu. The primary colour theme and overall layout make it feel like a children's whiteboard (i.e. it's kinda lame), except there is no paint/notepad application to be found. I'd love to see a Scott video about Console Colour Association. Like how 3DS and Switch are associated with the colour Red, and Wii U decided to have a Light Blue era, Playstation is this darker blue but sometimes a dark Grey (PS3) while Wii was a lighter grey but also White, Game Boy Color was Yellow, Game Boy Advance and Gamecube were Purple etc etc.

Switch special editions feel like what Nintendo did with the Wii U special -editions- edition, which was to basically slap some stickers on the main controller.
Scott, I love ya, man. Your videos are just always so enjoyable. I have a Tears of the Kingdom OLED and I do like it. I’m considering getting the Zelda Switch Lite. Just to keep with my Zelda theme.
The Splatoon OLED Switch looks really good with the unique Joycon colors, they even have a different back color(transparent white with icons edged in) and the back also looks neat. The Zelda OLED is also quite pretty, though I don't really like the color choice of gold/green for the left one, they should have gone with grey instead. The Dock is really beautiful with the Zelda one with the etched in Tri-Force.
I never really liked the new special editions until I needed an upgrade from a switch from launch that was beginning to show its age. I upgraded to the oled mario switch & I absolutely love it since it's not only an oled model & it kinda matches with my sharp twin famicom turbo, except that famicom is slightly orange.
Only the red ones are cool since they actually changed the dock and console colors. But especially on thebold Switch model it really bugs me they didn't bother color matchint the massive bezel with the rest of it so it sticks out even more than usual. Thankfully the Switch Lite doesn't make that same mistake
I genuinely contemplated getting a special edition when I had saved up enough to get my oled but the only ones available were SC/VI, ToTK, and Mario Red and I didn't want the red back to the main switch body in case of colour clashes with new joycons and neither of the others really caught my eye. I would have loved the red dock tho.
hopefully we'll get some fun next gen special editions when we get round to it. A bit late for the switch to start planning anything crazy at this point, apart from the Zelda switch lite, but I am questioning as to why they only did it as the limited version of the console and not the one with the dock, easily a missed opportunity there.
I always found the joycons only getting the design on the front being super awkward looking. And the back of the switch staying black (except on the Pokémon S&V)
Nintendo needs to take a page out of Sonys book with the PS5 plates Like when Spiderman 2 was coming out, they released a special edition but also let you buy the plates and controller separately
1:35 I ended up getting this one because it was pretty cheap 2nd hand and it's a special edition which i much prefer, but I do think they could've spiced it up with like making the switch itself like partly blue as well to not make the red so monotonous, and like a M marking on the switch itself and the dock. I really hope they up their special edition game for their upcoming console, because a special edition is one I'd want to get instead of the basic edition that's going to be relatively bland looking. If it were up to me, we'd have the return of the Funtastics!
"It's a Smash Bros design. And I like Smash Bros. So I want this Switch." As someone who tracked down the Japan-only Dragon Quest XI Switch console, I understand this. It does follow the same template Scott criticized of black dock with a logo, sticker-like engravings on the back, and unique joy-cons. And the seller I bought it from didn't have the special version of the DQXI game case that it originally came with. But I like Dragon Quest and I really wanted the console, and I'm happy to have it in my collection.
I so would have bought the Mario Wonder switch OLED if they made the front frame surrounding the screen red too, like the Bowser Fury one. It feels so weird looking when half of the console just isnt red for no reason
i think it's because nintendo believes only adults buy their normal nintendo switch and dont want people to realise it's a games console they play Kid games like Mario on
The Pokémon OLED is actually kinda cool. The back has a ton of vibrant, colorful Pokémon stickers. It's sorta like bumper sticker vibes which fits with the road-trip theme of the game pretty well. I like it way more than the boring etchings that blend in
Some of them do one thing right like the dock design, but fall short with everything else. personally i think the best of these are the recent zelda oled and the splatoon versions.
Imagine a world where we have special edition Switch docks with unique molds, like the Nintendo 64 that had a massive plastic Pikachu stickin out of its head. I thought for sure that’s the direction they’d take with these back in the day. I thought they’d have unique joycon molds too honestly….
The Switch doesn’t have good special editions because of their multiple accessories and SKUs which makes having a special edition pointless, when it was the Wii/Wii U and 3DS, you can have many variations of the overall console design!
Me realizing there was a missed opportunity for an all gold Switch during the release of Tears of the Kingdom but as things stand, it would have probably just had been some gold trim of Link on the black Switch dock.
I have the Splatoon 3 one, and I really like it. I agree they could have gone further with it, especially on the back of the system. But the joy-con are awesome (they're more than just unique colors), and while the design of the dock is relatively simple, the white really looks good with the bright colors of the joy-con. The only miss for me is the back of the system.
I got the Mario Odyssey Switch. The only thing they did was make the controllers red. I did get a themed Odyssey case with it, so that's something, I guess.
On my 39th birthday, Nintendo released the Smash Bros Switch bundle and the Diablo one. I got the Smash Bros Switch right there. My son was born just a couple hours before so I got the system for him (when older obviously) and he’s getting it either this or next year.
Another thing about these special editions is also the fact that, if they only have the joycons of a particular color(s) and they drift/break/get lost and you're forced to change them, then it's not that special anymore. My Switch for exemple is the Super Mario Odyssey one (A version without the case no less). My left joycon drifted and I really couldn't fix it honestly, so I threw it away in favor of another one, the blue one. I still have my right neon red joycon, but it's drifting as well and alone it's also less special. It looks more like the classic red and blue Switch than the Odyssey one

Switch special editions feel like what Nintendo did with the Wii U special -editions- edition, which was to basically slap some stickers on the main controller.
Wouldn't you when discussing Nintendo Switch special editions?
he is
i read this at 3 am and words cannot describe how much this made me laugh
Nintendo needs to take a page out of Sonys book with the PS5 plates
Like when Spiderman 2 was coming out, they released a special edition but also let you buy the plates and controller separately
Then it’s hardly a special edition, it’s just adding to a list of glorified stickers you can put on your console
A good special edition gives you the game it’s representing.
Love it when I get to see Scott but it’s in his Stash and instead of his hands I get to see his body language
I never thought I'd see the day Mr Stash would colab with Scott The Woz
1:35 I ended up getting this one because it was pretty cheap 2nd hand and it's a special edition which i much prefer, but I do think they could've spiced it up with like making the switch itself like partly blue as well to not make the red so monotonous, and like a M marking on the switch itself and the dock.
I really hope they up their special edition game for their upcoming console, because a special edition is one I'd want to get instead of the basic edition that's going to be relatively bland looking. If it were up to me, we'd have the return of the Funtastics!
"It's a Smash Bros design. And I like Smash Bros. So I want this Switch."
As someone who tracked down the Japan-only Dragon Quest XI Switch console, I understand this.
Somewhere out there, BeatEmUps is sweating furiously.
How nice of Scott the Woz to take over for Scott’s stash this episode!
I so would have bought the Mario Wonder switch OLED if they made the front frame surrounding the screen red too, like the Bowser Fury one. It feels so weird looking when half of the console just isnt red for no reason
Where is the rug 😮
The rug Stash Guy had, it really tied the video together, did it not?
i think it's because nintendo believes only adults buy their normal nintendo switch and dont want people to realise it's a games console they play Kid games like Mario on
I had the yoshi ds lite when I was young and I miss that so much
The Pokémon OLED is actually kinda cool. The back has a ton of vibrant, colorful Pokémon stickers. It's sorta like bumper sticker vibes which fits with the road-trip theme of the game pretty well. I like it way more than the boring etchings that blend in
The zelda 1 is beautiful scott
Some of them do one thing right like the dock design, but fall short with everything else. personally i think the best of these are the recent zelda oled and the splatoon versions.
Imagine a world where we have special edition Switch docks with unique molds, like the Nintendo 64 that had a massive plastic Pikachu stickin out of its head. I thought for sure that’s the direction they’d take with these back in the day. I thought they’d have unique joycon molds too honestly….
I completely forgot the Pokeball controller. It was crazy at the time, you would throw an actual Pokeball when you played the game.
I like the red ones a lot. I like subtlety. The mix of blue in the OG Switch is cool and the hidden coins on the OLED are neat.
I feel like Scott had a couple of drinks before he starts pressing the record button to this video
Justin, if you're seeing this, you're the goat and we'd love to see an update in your switch journey
I was kinda hoping him to talk about the insanely good looking joycons on the splatoon 3 ones, amazing
12:25 spot on, I miss the 3ds/2ds + their XL counterparts in their prime man
Thank you for the new vid, now I can finally do the dishes
It’s funny how each one he had so many negative things to say but they looked so clean and cool 😂
