Maldini once said "If I have to make a tackle then I have already made a mistake". VVD has the same world class mentality .
His display tonight against Crystal Palace was absolutely immense.. He talked young Joe Gomez through the game .. and had Benteke in his back pocket... Monster performance...This guy is our next captain and a future Liverpool legend.. Of that i have no doubts whatsoever.. We'll be fending off big bids from Barca, Real and PSG soon..YNWA
as a defender myself, I used to rush and tackle while younger but know I learnt that you don't really need to tackle just to be there in the right moment at the right time ;)

Simon Forrest Hottest young defender now is Mathijs de Ligt...he will (in time) be even better than Big Virgil...they are our defensive duo in the Dutch team...hes only 18 but a beast..and a leader as well...youngest captain in Ajax historie...when he was 15 he already was as big as a senior player...check him out...if Liverpool or any club are able to sign him that would be the best signing they make in years.
He's been world class even as a 22 year old. Nowadays he's much better in positioning, so he doesn't fly in to tackles as much, and so people think he isn't as good because tackles look better. Really I think he is the best defender in the prem, at least top 3. Others like Alderweireld and Vertongen play with a very sound team, whereas Van Dijk single-handedly turned an okay defense into a great one. Even Lovren and Gomez look really good next to him.
I dont understand how he didnt end up at Barca or Madrid or whatever after Celtic, how did no one go for him except for Southhampton? Surely he didnt pick Southhampton over a top club? I mean its good for us now, this way he went to Liverpool and fixed our defensive issues, but still...its weird
The answer is a combination of technology, data, and scouting. Southampton use a proprietary scouting model software aka secret black box computer that maintains a database of players and tracks their own statistics in addition to the usual metrics. At any one time, they are always able to find a replacement for any of their first team players should they have to move a player on. Their secret black box has a record of unearthing gems. Van Dijk is only one of many hidden gems that were found with this piece of technology. There are youtube videos of their secret black box if you want to know more.

I know that they have lost a lot of gems with the likes of Van Dijk, Nathaniel Clyne, Luke Shaw, Lovren, Jose Fonte, Lallana, Tadic, Mané etc.. but Southampton's transfer business this summer wasn't great so what's their excuse for not finding more hidden gems? The same goes for Leicester with finding N'Golo Kanté and then replaced him with Nampalys Mendy who was nowhere near the same level as Kanté.
your right it is weird but the reason is obviosly none of them though that he was good enough, scouts are a joke any scout worth his salt should have been able to tell her way good enough, our manager at the time ronny deila actually tipped city I'm sure it was and he bassi Clyde told them to sign him and they still didn't go for it
