In very fancy restaurants where this is served, the waiter will “flambé” it (set it alight) at the table. Of course you need the alcohol for that and it soon burns out. so does the flame. I still remember that in a New Orleans restaurant when I was a little girl. So exciting!
I always love it when the team get to try new foods. it's delightful to see them try to figure out what's in the dish, and then work out how to make their own version with ingredients available locally.

I've had bananas foster a few times in the past when I was a teenager. Tried it for the first time at a steakhouse for my 15th birthday. The waiter would flambé the rum and pour it over the ice cream and bananas. It burns off the alcohol but leaves in that unique flavor. Very good dessert.
the vast majority. different rums have different flavors and quality. what is usually used is a dark rum made from molasses aged in heavily charred barrels which gives not only the color but deep flavor
I love how they all drop their spoons when the presenter says it has rum in it ! 😛 raeen especially looks worried. Then they commence eating when he says they left out that part 😊
I assume Raeen doesn't drink...but his abrupt reaction of putting down the spoon of something he was massively enjoying eating a moment before and just hitting stunned disbelief was kinda funny. 😅🤣😅
I don't know if they are Muslim, but if they are, alcohol is haram. It's similar to how some foods aren't kosher in Judaism. Forbidden by religion. However, the alcohol cooks out, so it shouldn't be haram, I wouldn't think.
the ice cream is added to the dish after the bananas are cooked and put on the dish. the rum infuses the banana with flavor. you don't set fire to the dish with the ice cream out since the intese heat would melt the ice cream
True. Bananas Flambé would have to be done before the ice cream is added but would work fine. Typically the alcohol is added to the to the sauce as it cooks and the alcohol is burned out in that way.
@@SA-hf3fu not all of the alcohol. the vast majority is but someone who shouldn't drink for health, or personal or religious reasons should avoid the version using alcohol.

i used to make Bananas Foster at home about once every couple of months, and almost every year for my daughters when it was their birthday. it is so inexpensive and easy to make, i never understood why people consider it a "fancy" or luxury dessert. bananas, butter, vanilla, sugar, molasses, and rum. (and of course a decent ice cream to serve it on.) i have also made variants of this as well. mango peach pear apple pineapple i could go on for hours. 7:21 and now Babu mentions the different fruits. i like how his mind operates.
Have they had "nice cream"? It is bananas, frozen, and then whipped. Can add anything you wish, but instead of the sugary ice cream, the body of it, is mashed bananas.
When lit flambé as it Should be, the alcohol is burned off,& the flame extinguishes itself when there is no more fuel(alcohol),& it just leaves an extra layer of a unique flavor to a dish generally only served in high dollar restaurants, but many Do make it at home. Any Other variations is Not considered to be, or called the same name.
I love Babu! He is so adventurous and has an open mind. I know that they don’t usually partake (alcohol) however, he understands that a little bit in the recipe will not make him drink it every day. I enjoy his spirit - although he is the “elder” he always believes that there is something new he can learn. It’s nice that the host always tell them the entire recipe even when changes have to be made for cultural/personal/religious reasons.
It's hard to find this in a restaurant anymore, it's delicious. It can be made with a flame sauce (alcohol) that is ignited at the table and then the flame goes out.
Wish they would have shared the recipe and/or the actual ingredients in it with them. That way they would know it wasn't made with chocolate, and they could use their jaggery in the recipe
When cooking with alcoholic beverages the alcohol burns off leaving the flavour behind. So it is okay to use just have to make sure its in the cooking process and not added in raw
I consider myself a foodie, but I must trust their opinion, as due to having to take numerous potassium 'banana flavored" doses well recovering from a lung transplant, I cannot stomach banana/banana flavoring in a sweet form. Makes me gag. That being said, I am quite happy they enjoyed it :)
Babu, when the alcohol is cooked it loses its ability to make you high. When it is cooked with high heat the alcohol is burned off and you are left with just the really great flavor.
Just an idea but I think it would be fun to have these guys try all kinds of traditional American Halloween treats such as Snickers, Reeces, milky way etc.
If he thinks this bananas and ice cream dish is weird, imagine what he'd think of a banana split! ;) Raw banana sliced the long way down the middle in a bowl with ice cream scoops down the middle [often several different flavors, like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, etc.], whipped cream, chopped nuts, sauces (chocolate, butterscotch, caramel), maraschino cherries, pineapple chunks, shredded coconut, etc., etc. His mind would be blown I tell you! Blown! ;)
Bananas Foster is actually pretty easy to make, I think. The sauce is what, basically butter, sugar, cinnamon and maybe a little vanilla, cooked together into a cinnamon/sugar sauce, the bananas are grilled or fried, and the sauce is placed over top, or maybe they're sauteed in it? And then it's plated and a scoop or two of ice cream are added. And it's ready to go. Fairly straightforward one you know the recipe and steps. :)
And, while a little alcohol [rum] might be added in some recipes, the alcohol generally evaporates and "cooks out," leaving just the sugar / flavor of the rum, but basically none of the alcohol.
I'm pretty sure they actually already did banana splits on this show, but it was Sarru and Amin (who btw have an amazing chemistry together on camera) tasting it, and they both loved it.
It's ok, guys...even if it was made with a teaspoon or 2 of rum, it burns off in the cooking process. It leaves a flavor behind, but nothing that can harm you. Even little kids can eat it. However, even without the rum it is still delicious! That "sauce" is just a little butter, brown sugar and cinnamon.
The alcohol is set on fire after adding it to the pan. This burns the alcohol content from the dish leaving the flavor of the alcohol behind. You cannot become intoxicated from this. ♡
It's a shame you had to skip the rum. That makes it for me! Is it that these gentlemen don't drink alcohol at all? I've seen them look nervous about it before, but didn't get the impression that it was completely off the menu.
