Here's a remake of my song, Jórsalanám, written and performed by me in Old Norse. It’s the first song I wrote that became quite popular. The song details the events of the Siege of Jerusalem in 1099 from the perspective of a Scandinavian crusader - people from all over Europe responded to the call of Pope Urban II, with varying degrees of success. Marching through Anatolia and Syria, taking lands as they went, the Crusaders reached Jerusalem and, after a hard won siege, captured the city, instituting the Kingdom of Jerusalem. You might notice that the intonation is a little different in this remake to the original, and, among other things, that’s because I used to basically ignore the initial stress that should be placed on Old Norse words. I’ve also improved the lyrics in some places. The name of the song, Jórsalanám, literally means "The Taking of Jerusalem". My intention is exclusively to teach history and languages through song. I do not condone, endorse or seek to glorify violence. I do not own any of the artworks in this video and all credit goes to the original artists. Hope you enjoy the song. I've come up with an English version that can be sung. Slightly adjusted from the translation given here.
I'll try to lay it out here
Four full winters since the pope's decree
We all pledged to join the crusade
We have taken up the holy cross
And Rideth to Jerusalem
Turk'y and Syr'ia drenched in Christ'ian blood
Antioch rests in the hands of Christ
Past Acre's walls and Bethlehem we ride
Jerusalem awaits our spears!
The city rises from the horizon
Crusaders forward, march to the fight!
Encircle now those towering walls and
block out any escape
Raymond and his Franks hold Mount Zion
At Steven's gate, their lines are formed
Godfrey marches towards the Flower Gate and
Tancred from Bethlehem!
Now we do battle with the Saracens
On burning sands the slain now lie
It matters not if we fail to return
We fight before the holy cross
Many thought all hope had been lost
The land was hard, there was no food
In heavy mail beneath burning sun the
desert spells certain death
Iftikhar, governor of Jerusalem
Calls for aid from Egypt's fleet.
Thousands march from the deserts south
and cowards in our ranks flee
Peter had a vision of Adhemar
And led us up the olive mount
Barefoot all the warriors made their way
To pray and seek god's will
Bitter words gave way to prayer
The Christians all reconciled
A holy power shone from the sky
March, Christmen forth! Heaven 'waits you!
From the sea, to our aid came
a great host with timber and stone
Men from Genoa and England
Helped build our siege engines
Three long days, the battle raged on
From Mount Zion to the north wall
Catapults spat their rains of missiles
Down came the Saracen's walls
Then Godfrey and his Lotharingjamen
Charged across the flower bridge
Their tide of swords swept into the keep
And drove the Saracens out
Godfrey was chosen to be the king
But Jesus' crown he would not take
Instead he took the title Defender of
the holy Sepulchre
Now we guard from the egyptian host
Al-Afdal marches with his men
To battle rides Godfrey and Robert
With his host of Flemish knights
Ten thousand crusaders raised their swords
At dawn upon the plain of
Ascalon in the darkness
The foe was blinded by god
Then Christ's men struck beneath the cross
With sword and bow, the foe was forced back
The Saracens broke in fear
And were expelled from the land
Now our holy oath has been fulfilled
The bells ring out in Christ's tomb
Over the Sepulchre of our dear lord
All glory be to god!
Amazing! Thinking about a HD remake of your Old Norse Palästinalied?
Hell yeah

Þakka þér fyrir!
Amazing
Another excellent remake! Will your song on st Olaf get a remake? Also can you tell us when your last few songs will be on Spotify?
Love this, DEUS VULT! 💪🏻✝️
If someone played + sang this for me at a campfire I would probably become his loyal friend forever
This is amazing! I am a huge fan of these remakes. I know it's technically the same song, but is there any chance of a remake of the Latin version as well? This one is of course perfect, but the Latin one is very dear to my heart as well.
I'll probably remake the Latin one too eventually :-)
Can I slow down+reverb your song, ad shots from "Kingdom of Heaven" as my new video? I can assure you that I will give credits to your work
@@Polish_Orthodox_Knight of course! I'd love to see it when you're done
@@SkaldBard Thank you for permission!😁
I'll let you know as soon as it's made
Nice remake! Definitely has a different sound and style from the initial version.
What is the harp being played in this recording? A Clairsach?
Thanks, man! It's an Irish 10 string lyre
@@SkaldBard Awesome! Is it modern or does it have ancient/medieval origins?
@@iberius9937ancient origins, the precursor of the more complex Irish harp :-)
can you make a HD remake of canute the great
😍😍😍
Fuck yes
Relevant now more than ever. Denmark, Norway, Sweden, what is happening to you? Wake up. Also nice remake, sounds good.
Christ is king!
Can you make this remake in Latin too? I would love it too much ❤️🔥
I wonder whether Mr. Skaldic Bard could write a song about Magna Carta Libertatum and Stephen Langton?
When is the remake of the Latin version coming?
Will the remake be on Apple Music?
Eventually, yep!
@@SkaldBard Thank you! This is amazing :)
This feels like me, since I'm an ex Norse Pagan turned aspiring Catholic (family is forcing me to be Baptist :/).
That must be difficult for you, my friend, but keep the faith. I pray your family will come around
@@SkaldBard It is hard, and I appreciate the prayers. I also appreciate ,y lack of memory since I've mentioned my pagan past a lot now. XD
Not quite Jorsalaljod, but it sure as shit will do.
@@NorwegianSedevacantist ;-)
Good trench crusade music...
This song inspired me to play Denmark in Medieval 2 TW and conquer North Africa. 😅
God's holy warriors
Stop cooking sir... stop cooking...
Do you think you could do a song in ancient Egyptian?
Hah, honestly, probably not -- but that would be pretty awesome
