Here's a remake of my song, Jórsalanám, written and performed by me in Old Norse. It’s the first song I wrote that became quite popular.
The song details the events of the Siege of Jerusalem in 1099 from the perspective of a Scandinavian crusader - people from all over Europe responded to the call of Pope Urban II, with varying degrees of success. Marching through Anatolia and Syria, taking lands as they went, the Crusaders reached Jerusalem and, after a hard won siege, captured the city, instituting the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
You might notice that the intonation is a little different in this remake to the original, and, among other things, that’s because I used to basically ignore the initial stress that should be placed on Old Norse words. I’ve also improved the lyrics in some places.
The name of the song, Jórsalanám, literally means "The Taking of Jerusalem".
My intention is exclusively to teach history and languages through song. I do not condone, endorse or seek to glorify violence. I do not own any of the artworks in this video and all credit goes to the original artists.
Hope you enjoy the song. Please leave a comment, like and subscribe if you did! You can also support the channel by donating if you’d like to buymeacoffee.com/theskaldicbard. Many thanks for your kindness and support as always!
    Lyrics:
    Fjórum vetrum eptir hvǫtun Páfa,
    Kváðumsk allir fylgja vilja.
    Tekit hǫfum á oss krossinn.
    Ríðum nú til Jórsala.
Serk- ok Sýrland eru rekin kristnu blóði,
    Antíokkía er í hendi Krists.
Um Akrsborg ok Brauðshús fǫrum vér,
    Jórsalir brodda bíða!
    Upp skýtr borg ór himinjǫðri.
    Jórsalafarar, vér gǫngum fram.
    Skipizk nú umhverfis múrana,
    Dyttið þér borgarhliðin.
    Ráðmundr ok Frakkar skipa nú
    Síonarfjall ok hlið Stefáns.
    Guðfreðr gengr at Blómahliði,
    ok Þakkráðr ór Brauðshúsi
Nú heyjum vér bardaga við Serki!
    Valr liggr á sandi heitum.
    Varðar engu um vára aptrkomu.
    Berjumsk vér til sigrs krossins.
    Mǫrgum þótti fyrir ván komit.
Landit var skarpt ok matland illt.
    Í brynju þungri at sumarmagni
    eyðimǫrk bana veitir.
    Iftikar Jórsalavaldr heitir
    á Egiptafólkit ok skip.
    Þúsundir manna bifask fyrir sunnan.
    Flugu svá menn þreklausir.
    Pétri presti sýndisk Auðmarr.
    Kvað drengi at pílagrímsferð
    upp eptir Viðsmjǫrsviðarfjalli.
    Berfœttir gengum allir.
    Sárorð viku fyrir bœnum.
    Kristnir til sætta komu.
    Fengum þá himinkrapt helgan.
    Fram, Kristmenn, fram á himinvanga.
    Ór sjávargǫtu at liði
    kominn nú er herr Englanna
    ásamt mǫnnum Genúu ór.
    Þeir stein ok timbr bera.
    Liðu þrír dagar hvassar orrustu.
    Ór Síonarfjalli ok á norðrmúr
fell skothrið dag ok nótt, ok skotvagnar
    niðr kastalann brutu.
    Þá hlupu Guðfreðr ok Loþahringjamenn
    yfir brú Blómahliðsins.
Í mækis á tóku þeir hǫllina
    ok ráku Serki ór borg.
Guðfreðr valinn var til konungs, en
    kórónu Jésú vildi hann ei.
    Var hann svá kallaðr verndari
    hinnar helgu grafar.
    Nú verjum vér borg Egiptafólki
    Sjalfr gengr Al Afdal valdr
    Til orrostu ganga þeir Guðfreðr
    með Hróðbjarti Flæmingja
    Tíu þúsundir Jórsalafara,
    þeir at árum degi brugðu
    á Askalonarvǫllum sverðum.
    Fjándum dimmt varð fyrir augum.
Þá lǫgðu Kristmenn sverðum at þeim
    ok bogum undir merki krossins.
    Serkjunum skaut skelk í bringu
    ok reknir urðu ór landi.
Efnt hǫfum vér eið váran heilaga.
    Aptr hljóð klukkna heyrisk
á helgu grǫf Dróttins várs góða.

This song echoes the Norwegian crusade of 1107, led by king Sigurd the Crusader of Norway who sailed down to Gibraltar and all the way to Jerusalem winning every battle along the way and establishing the lordship of Sidon at the end. It was the first crusade personally led by a European king and set the trend for future national crusades. As a Scandinavian I'm proud of my ancestors, especially continuing on in viking spirit even during the crusades as zealous Christians.

I've come up with an English version that can be sung. Slightly adjusted from the translation given here.
I'll try to lay it out here
Four full winters since the pope's decree
We all pledged to join the crusade
We have taken up the holy cross
    And Rideth to Jerusalem
    Turk'y and Syr'ia drenched in Christ'ian blood
Antioch rests in the hands of Christ
Past Acre's walls and Bethlehem we ride
    Jerusalem awaits our spears!
The city rises from the horizon
Crusaders forward, march to the fight!
Encircle now those towering walls and
    block out any escape
Raymond and his Franks hold Mount Zion
At Steven's gate, their lines are formed
Godfrey marches towards the Flower Gate and
    Tancred from Bethlehem!
Now we do battle with the Saracens
On burning sands the slain now lie
It matters not if we fail to return
We fight before the holy cross
Many thought all hope had been lost
The land was hard, there was no food
In heavy mail beneath burning sun the
    desert spells certain death
    Iftikhar, governor of Jerusalem
Calls for aid from Egypt's fleet.
Thousands march from the deserts south
and cowards in our ranks flee
Peter had a vision of Adhemar
And led us up the olive mount
Barefoot all the warriors made their way
To pray and seek god's will
Bitter words gave way to prayer
    The Christians all reconciled
A holy power shone from the sky
March, Christmen forth! Heaven 'waits you!
From the sea, to our aid came
a great host with timber and stone
    Men from Genoa and England
    Helped build our siege engines
Three long days, the battle raged on
From Mount Zion to the north wall
Catapults spat their rains of missiles
    Down came the Saracen's walls
    Then Godfrey and his Lotharingjamen
    Charged across the flower bridge
Their tide of swords swept into the keep
    And drove the Saracens out
Godfrey was chosen to be the king
But Jesus' crown he would not take
Instead he took the title Defender of
    the holy Sepulchre
Now we guard from the egyptian host
    Al-Afdal marches with his men
To battle rides Godfrey and Robert
With his host of Flemish knights
Ten thousand crusaders raised their swords
At dawn upon the plain of
    Ascalon in the darkness
The foe was blinded by god
Then Christ's men struck beneath the cross
With sword and bow, the foe was forced back
    The Saracens broke in fear
And were expelled from the land
Now our holy oath has been fulfilled
The bells ring out in Christ's tomb
Over the Sepulchre of our dear lord
    All glory be to god!
