  • For Great Plains Native Americans, Buffalo have meant everything. But in the late 1800s, US government hunted the buffalo almost to the extinction to primarily weaken the North American Natives. In this video, Oglala Lakota women talk about their connection to the buffalo today.

    I am black, but I love the heck out of Native Americans and their culture. I have visited Oglala reservation and Crazy Horse monument in South Dakota, the Pima Indian reservation in AZ etc. When ever I travel to any state, I also ensure to visit these wonderful people. I only wish they would come out more.

      I pass out this flyer of truth
      Helping people at the command of the Creator
      Most people are Gods incarnate, becoming humans

      I'm Irish and Scots,and I support this completely. I'm living in Michigan, born and raised here, and I never experienced racism being thrown at Native Americans until I moved away from Detroit. It was bad enough being around racists that maligned Black people, then I realized that racism was much bigger than I imagined.

    As a Oglala Lakota man I have the utmost respect for our women It is sickening to see men of all races and women make comments such as they have. No shame in what they say or how they act, our women and the buffalo are beautiful and tunkasilas (gods) for all you non natives, gift to earth. And personally as a Lakota man I know none of you men who gawk at our women would stand face to face with me and survive. All these women are beautiful and strong to me such as out way of life. Ignorance is prevalent in all colors of man and I pray for you all and hope the people who have disrespected these beautiful women never meet one of them face to face. I respect all those with good things to say and to those who don't we are still here you didn't kill us all and we will survive and live as we are meant to.

    While my many travels in USA and Canada, where I had so many relatives, I met so many natives of different tribes.
    I spent a lots of time with them and they gave me so many thoughts about the nature, living with that nature and respect for the animals.
    One time I hit back from a moose hunt to Lac la Hache, where my relatives were waiting for me and I gave a lift for two natives from Prince George to Williams Lake.
    As a thank you they invitet me to stay for some days. I took this and one the last day theire medicin man invited me for some time in his house. He told me things in my life he could not know about.
    Eventually he gave me my totem - the raven.
    Since that experience I think, that has opened my view wider to understand the relationship between animals, nature and my being on the earth.

      Hailey Hocken I don't know about you, Hailey, but I have not done anything bad to the Lakota, but they have to me. I don't want to hear about the 4 values: generosity, courage, respect and wisdom because they are not truly followed. Any organization gets corrupt and that includes tribes.

    • @HaileyHocken
      @HaileyHocken 9 лет назад +1

      Merlyn Schutterle If you don't want to hear about it, don't watch the video and don't go on my profile, it is as simple as that. I don't need ignorant and rude comments from people who don't want to understand, and from people who no matter how hard you try to make understand, just won't because they don't want to and have closed their minds. And no, I have not personally wronged a Lakota, nor have any EVER wronged me, but I know for sure some of our ancestors have wronged these people and I PERSONALLY CHOSE,fully within my rights, to express how I feel and to unlike the rest of the world "who did nothing to them personally", I have chosen to set out and make it my DUTY as a world citizen to try and start make amends and try to help fix some of the horrific things some of my ancestors DID DO "personally" to them... Things that still haven't been made right to this day. It is people with that mentality "I didn't do anything personally" that contribute to these people never getting the help they fully deserve and given back what is rightfully theirs. And side note, if you do your research they didn't sound like they ever were corrupt to me at all(Although any race, or group of anything, CAN have individuals who don't look out for the best interests of others)- they lived in harmony among themselves, the planet and all living beings on it, (something we could all learn)- that is until the Europeans and such came along and tried to corrupt THEM and destroy something so beautiful but yet something others with closed minds could never understand. They didn't ask for that, they didn't ask to be treated horribly, to have their lands taken, their homes destroyed,etc. And they certainly didn't need to share with the Europeans and everyone who came over , & I think a lot people fail to realize that, and fail to realize that hey, we probably wouldn't be here if they weren't so nice. I think they deserve a lot more respect than what is given to them. I will no longer reply to any more of your comments, so please don't bother commenting anymore, I just don't have time for such ignorance. I am who I am, I believe what I believe and that is evident. Don't bother trying to change people just because they aren't like you. There is no need to spread anger or hate, just don't look at things you don't like, no need to be rude to those who do and no need to be rude towards the kind people who made this and shared their beliefs.
      AND PS;
      I was referring to everyone who has not helped the Aboriginals , and instead and over the course of TOO many years has stood by and done nothing. "everything we've done", means anyone who has not helped, anyone who has stood by and done nothing...

    The insight and perspectives shared by these women shows the type of philosophies we need to improve life on this planet. At one time, all peoples on the planet were, like these women and many other people from Native cultures, more aware of their connections to other life and the natural world. Unfortunately, those essential ideas have too often been replaced by beliefs that are disconnected from nature and many people suffer because of this.

    When I was about 10 yrs old I went to the closest thing to a Pow Wow, North Hollywood Ca ever had. We ate Buffalo meat, delicious. I won the raffle and got a big turquoise necklace, which I gave to my mother. I was always envious of anyone who was native American and often dreamt that I was. Later when DNA tests became available I discovered the truth and that I am 15% native, through my father's side in New Mexico. My ancestry is located for centuries around Taos Pueblo. Peace to you and best of success in restoring the Buffalo
