I forgot about using air to cool down the metal. The tip of making and using those metal brackets is pretty neat. Thanks for another informative video.
Glad to help
Good tips about the PPE. The only thing I would do different .Is when I'm using my cut off wheel .I wear my leather welding jacket snaped up.
The way I learned to do plug welds is to start just at the top outside of the hole, strike the arc, then spiral down in and around to do the whole thing in one swoop. If you practice that first on some scraps you'll get the hang of it. Also your stick-out looks a little long; it should be 3/8 to 1/2" to stay inside the gas. This just takes practice on something that isn't your car, and I don't claim to be an expert. Cooling with the air hose is good practice ;)
Use a hack saw to cut off those edges when it is way faster. You'll learn how to use sit after a while.I'm a iron worker and I used it constantly just a thought
Good suggestion, save the old panel
Hey Jeff , did you make your own tubing work table or is that a purchase ?
That is a quilt rack from a closed Bed Bath and Beyond. LOL
Weld through primer
But see, that's just a primer. Most primers I have experience with tend to be more porous than standard enamel paint. In either case, the area right around the weld is still going to burn the paint; or the welder primer off.
where are you located in SC?
I actually enjoy floor pans even though my technique includes a bfh for help. Ball peaned hammer with a wooden handle.
I normally do too.
Dang Jeff! I wish I had seen this sooner. I was doing it wrong for years! I could have avoided so many problems if I had realized that it wasn’t cut twice and measure once!😂😂😂
RIGHT? RIGHT?! I've been affected by the "Let's just go ahead and keep moving" too many times to not at least tell somebody that you need to measure twice and cut once.
Thanks!
I’ll have to do this similar work on my ‘64 Galaxie trunk pan .
Thanks for the super thanks, bill. That's too for you isn't it? We appreciate you helping to show out.
