"Canzona serenata" from Forgotten Melodies, Op. 38/6 | MEDTNER | Luke Faulkner

- This is one of my favourite solo piano works by Nikolai Medtner, a contemporary and friend of Rachmaninoff (whose 150th birthday it is this year).
Medtner invites you into his story with a nostalgic opening figuration that acts as a narrator in the series (this piece comes from a series collection of 8 compositions in which this figuration reappears frequently).
The story starts at 0:36 and is a dramatic, turbulent tale of hard times and sorrow that perhaps leads to better times, warmth, and tenderness at 1:27 - the melody/texture here is delicate and innocent and one of my favourite passages by Medtner. It is short-lived, however, and becomes more ominous and mischievous at 2:04 descending into a chaos that condenses into an incredibly long mist-like trill at 2:17 (a device Medtner also uses in the F Minor Fairy Tale that I shared earlier).
Once the mists subside, a melancholic waltz emerges before the earlier dramatic theme returns at 2:54. The narrator brings the story to a poetic conclusion at 3:20 and ultimately fades to a lingering Ab that would have been the thread into the next piece had I recorded the complete set.

Nice venue! Looks like it was bombed!
You're spot on - it was bombed during WWII and never fully repaired.
Wonderful "serenata", Luke.
Congratulations ! 💐
Beautifully played, lovely composition. Always enjoy listening, of course, but watching you play is equally satisfying. Love to see an artist whose passion is evident.

@@LukeFaulkner piano is the music of the soul and your skill is absolutely divine. I remember the very first time I heard Gymnopedie by Satie, time stood still and I was transfixed. I thoroughly enjoy your music and look forward to more now that I have discovered your music. Thank you. ❤️🔥🌹
Enjoying every bit while your playing. Excellente
Thanks so much!
Beautiful 👌 one of my favorite pieces
Mine too!
Beautiful piece, thank you for sharing !
My pleasure - happy you enjoyed it!
Beautiful piece. It feels, like it's telling us a story. And a tumultuous one, at that. So much variation in the tempo and intensity and mood.
I will have to look up the piece/composer.
I completely agree - it's a whole story in only 4 minutes!
I have admired your own compositions for many years, Luke, as well as your play of other compositors' works! Is there a chance you would participate to some piano festivals here in Sweden? I would very much love to hear you live! Classical music on RUclips is beautiful, but hearing it live, is a different story
I'd love to, Andreea! Do you have any particular festivals in mind?
@@LukeFaulknerOh, thank you so much for responding! I was thinking about the Piano Festival in Gothenburg or Konserthuset in Stockholm. I unfortunately don't know to give more details on how to apply as a participant. Would be amazing if by any chance you would attend anything here!
Exquisite!
Sorry I missed your premiere Luke. It's just beautiful! Really touches the heart. That's the magic of Medtner's compositions, together with your touch. I hope you are well. We haven't had a premiere from you in a while and I was starting to suffer withdrawal symptoms 😁😅 Ha! Ha! Ha! Ros 🌻🌻🌻🌻
Awww - you're so kind, dear Ros! I've tried to upload more frequently recently :)
@@LukeFaulkner So happy! You are very kind to go through all the comments from all of us!
I can't believe I'm 17 hours late😱 Wonderful performance, bravo sir👏👏👏
I'm about 8 months late in replying - sorry about that! Thank you, my friend 🥰
I thought the live stream was later, haha 😅 But happy to listen now 😊I always learn so much about other pieces and composers I've never heard of when I listen to your work, Luke! Thank you again for an amazing performance, it felt so dramatic!
I'm delighted you enjoyed it, Abi! It's quite an obscure piece but I love it.
Really nice!
Как всегда- очаровательно!
Спасибо!
Very beautiful ♡
Thank you, Anne-Sophie!
Really beautiful Luke 🥰.. Would you ever give us a live performance and play our favourite pieces from your album someday 😁?.Just asking 😳.
Maybe some day I'll have the opportunity, Suraini!
@@LukeFaulkner On RUclips live 😁🤞🏻

Damn, I missed the premiere ! 🙃😭
How are you Luke ? I hope your summer went well ?
Great performance, as always ☺
I've already listened to you play this track as it's on my "Luke Faulkner playlist" on Spotify 🤗 but it's very nice to SEE you play as well as listen to you :)
I've just seen on your YT channel that you've shared a new piece, for HDmusic I mean, ECHOES. It's crazy: I'm pretty sure I've heard it before... piano solo version... Didn't I? Could you refresh my memory? 😄😊
This new version is sublime 😍
Aww - you're absolutely right, Manon! It's an entirely new recording :)
@@LukeFaulkner thanks for your reply dearest 😘
@@LukeFaulkner 😊 😘
Very nice.
Thank you!
An interesting composition Luke - sublimely performed. I listened to the piece at least three times before discovering your explanatory notes. I did indeed have an initial instinctive reaction to the structure of the piece; an awareness of the fascinating yet extremely brief emotional pathways the composer invites us to follow and then guiding us back to the more focused byways leading to the ultimate conclusion of the work. Given my limited knowledge, I feel this is a work well worth its contemporaneous status to/of the oeuvre of the composer whose work I'm currently so obsessed with. I can't remember if you have ever attempted any of The Rach's works ? It would be such a thrill to hear you playing Trifonov's piano arrangement of the Vocalise . . . I feel a deep need to spend an evening (or better still a whole day) with your own body of work as it gives me so much listening pleasure/satisfaction. I can't quite pinpoint it but when I listen to some of your compositions it is as if you don't compose with musical notes but with images. I was particularly aware of this listening to both versions of "Under the Crystal Veil" recently. I am not sure if this has been brought about by your Masters in Film Composition and a natural inborn talent but it is quite uncanny how you manage to grasp imagery and weave it into your compositions. Quite magical. This must surely be your ultimate destiny. I just wish someone at the studios will wake up to an awareness of your very particular talent.
I love Rachmaninoff's music and play it a lot for my personal enjoyment, but haven't recorded very much. There are many wonderful recordings online which take his compositions in many different directions. This is partly why I've focused on championing his contemporaries instead.
Thank you so much for your kind words, Danie! I tend to think in terms of images and stories when I'm writing and find it easier to dive into composition when starting with a prompt, which is partly why I did the Masters. 😊
Ahh how did I miss this premiere, I listen to your music on YT basically daily. How are you Luke, hope summer has been great! Any plans for concerts soon? As always, love listening to your exquisite performances, thank you ✨
Thank you so much, dear Astari! I'm thinking of setting up a mailing list for the day when I start giving concerts - when it's up and running I'll mention it in a pinned comment on a future video.
@@LukeFaulkner I think you can (or perhaps should 😉) start having mailing list already, Luke. And please do come to Helsinki 🤗I believe there must be venues that would be suitable for your concerts.
