Best wishes to all of these folks who are now unemployed, nothing but empathy from me. I thought a company that large had to give some notice when it came to a layoff this large? Horrible on the part of Sumitomo 👎.

Sumitomo is leaving because Trump won the election. Notice how they all of the sudden are leaving days after Trump's victory??? They don't want to pay lifetime pensions to these workers and they know that Donald Trump won't do anything about them leaving

My heart breaks for my fellow American laborers. Several points:
    1. It was a LOUSY way for Sumitomo HQ in Japan to do this. They KNEW in advance that they were likely going to shut down this plant, yet THEY LIED to their workers with the subterfuge that they would give the plant a week off to reduce inventory (so they wouldn't have to buy another warehouse to store the surplus tires). It's sad and disgusting that the company can't/won't be honest with its employees; they deserve better.
    2. It's also sad and disgusting that the company evidently felt a need to "beef up security forces" around the plant as they erected chain link fencing to keep people out and preserve the building and plant asset (likely in anticipation of sale). It's sad and disgusting on BOTH counts: first that the company would treat its employees and families that way, BUT ALSO -- in FAIRNESS to companies and shareholders -- secondly that the company would feel compelled to undertake these measures because evidence DOES EXIST to show that companies ARE RIGHTFULLY CONCERNED ABOUT VANDALISM and destruction of their property following these events ... because unions, workers, and worker family members/friends HAVE IN FACT ENGAGED IN PROPERTY DAMAGE and DESTRUCTION following hard contract negotiatiojns, strikes, layoffs, and outright closures.
    3. Don't ever forget that the TRUE VILLAIN in this particular closure is COMMUNIST CHINA (you heard it straight from the 34 year employee being interviewed): they FLOODED THE MARKET WITH THEIR TIRES. The Chinese tires are more attractive to consumers/customers due to their lower cost (because of lower wages to Chinese workers and UNFAIR Government subsidies which "CHEAT" on "FREE TRADE"). THIS IS EXACTLY WHY TARIFFS MAY BE THE RIGHT WEAPON TO EMPLOY: because tariffs slapped on foreign goods that are COMPETING UNFAIRLY will result in those foreign goods costing U.S. consumers more $$$ (thereby negating the cheaper foreign goods' price advantage and forcing them to now have to compete on more equal footing with the "more expensive" American-produced goods (made by American laborers getting paid better wages and without U.S. Government subsidies). The end result will be that MORE AMERICAN JOBS WILL BE PROTECTED when foreign companies realize that we won't let them keep making more $$$ at the expense of U.S. workers by making the products in foreign lands with cheap labor and then flooding the U.S. market with lower-cost goods that render our domestic products "too expensive" (leading to more U.S. plant closures).

if it were Biden and Harris, they would’ve shut down long ago- you have a new administration coming in and suddenly they shut down. What are you talking about?

Union got paid off, probably just said okay, as long as you pay our Union office management that eats donuts 40 hours a week.

The Union sold out to foreign interests. That way they can avoid paying lifetime pensions to those workers. The idea is to collect Union dues and never pay the PENSIONS

The market for Chinese tires in the United States has been affected by tariffs and other factors, including:
      Tariffs
The US government has imposed tariffs on Chinese tire imports, which has increased the price of Chinese tires and led to a decrease in their market share. In 2023, Chinese tire imports to the US decreased by 35%.
      Competition
Other countries, such as South Korea and Thailand, have gained market share in the US tire market by competing with Chinese tires.
      Domestic demand
The US has a large automobile industry and is the world's top import market for tires. However, domestic tire production in the US has not been able to meet demand.
      Overseas production
Some Chinese tire companies have moved production to other countries, such as Thailand and Vietnam, to avoid tariffs.
      Quality
Some say that Chinese tire manufacturers are producing better quality tires.
The import volume of Chinese tires in the United States has significantly decreased, with a total of 25.61 million pieces, a year-on-year decrease of 35%. Among them, the import volume of passenger car tires and truck passenger car tires decreased by 17% and 39% respectively.
This information is a short google search away.....at least take some time to look stuff up without listening blindly to random claims about China/US relations we have heavily tariffed their tires. The company run by the Japanese are just terrible.
