  • In California's effort to fundamentally change how it operates its prisons, two prisons are operating under a trial program that puts the focus on rehabilitating prisoners to cut down on recidivism. NBC's Steve Patterson takes us into a women's facility to find out how and if the program is effective.

From the 60s going into the 70 our prison system started to focus on Rehabilitation rather than punishment. But by the time the 80s and 90s rolled around, it was all about the harshest punishment possible! I was a victim of that system because I used cannabis! I'm glad to see things starting to shift back to a more sane and sensible and productive programs that will actually keep people out of prison!!

I have lived next to a State Mental Hospital, including facilities for the criminally insane for over 70 years. When I was a kid I would see patients working in the fields, growing their own food crops. They also had their own Dairy cows to care for. This kept them busy and gave them a purpose in life. Then when the State released these patients out on the streets to fend for themselves, our homeless problem exploded. The State used most of the former Asylum property to build a State University. Our mental health system was sabotaged and now most prison systems have taken the place of mental health facilities. Making prisons self sufficient and teaching prisoners a trade should reduce recidivism decrease. It may not help gang members or psychopaths/sociopaths, but others in the population could be helped.

One of the best things they could do is grow organic veggies, fruits, nuts, etc., to have organic gardens and orchards, like a food forest, with some flowers strewn about...Most people would be inspired to grow their own produce, etc., and then they'll be surrounded by nourishing and nurturing beauty...and they could use what they grow...Every prison should have that opportunity, as well as everyone in the world...🍎🍏

Having worked in prisons for over twenty years in another state, there are some issues with this approach. First, this can work but there always has to be the knowledge that things can turn at any moment and those issues will be caused by inmates and staff that got too comfortable. I promote a more social aspect of prison reform but simply trying to introduce that to every prison in the state is going to end up with some serious problems. There are inmates who are going to take advantage of this and play wolf in sheep's clothing to forward their own criminal agenda when the time is right. The prison system has to be selective and start fairly small. The success can be used to entice others to do well in order to get more liberties and better conditions. Create a contract with inmates who want to participate in this program. If they significantly violate the contract, they go back to a facility that's status quo for corrections today. A big problem is not separating violent inmates with a significant criminal history or those who show a propensity for continued violence and illegal activity from those who got found guilty and are in prison to simply do their time while trying to improve their outlook on life and get away from criminal behavior. Without separation, there will always be recruitment into gangs, forced loyalty based on race, assaults based on crime, and security issues that affect those who are not involved in criminal behavior inside the walls and fence lines. I have worked with plenty of inmates who decided they want to get out of the prison politics and do their best to change their attitude. I have also worked with those who pretend to want to change, then go right back to the same crap they were doing as a gang member or management problem. DOC can only provide so much. The rest of it has to come from the inmate. One big thing is to bring these ideas to the streets and try to change the cycle before kids turn to gangs, crime, and violence. We don't do enough for that. This is not a simple fix. It'll take decades to solidify this into common practice.

The point of prison is to turn people's lives around . The loss of freedom IS the punishment not abuse , infested cells , torture , suffering etc . They are not having fun in prison they are learning how to be productive members of society , THAT is what prison is supposed to accomplish . People get released when their sentence is done , what kind of people do you want being released , people who are angry , who have no skills or opportunity to get a job , who have no chance of changing their life , who have to turn to crime again in order to survive or people who have learned how they can be productive members of society who have a chance of having a different life ? What is the purpose of sending people to prison over and over again when it doesnt benefit society ,the staff or the inmates and has no positive outcome , only countless negatives ? It costs a fortune for police , duty counsel , court costs , jail , the damage to society and victims , families , children etc and the amount is insane when people are sent to jail repeatedly but it costs far less and makes far more sense to REFORM them , to educate and teach job skills and how to be productive members of society the first time they are sent to jail . These types of prisons are not open for violent offenders. If you’re a labeled gangbanger or your crime was committed with a deadly weapon… you know if you’ve ever heard a trial and the DA for finding the verdict… the reason why is because it disqualifies the inmate from these programs. The same for the fire camps here in California. You can’t go and fight wildfires if you’re a violent offender. So mostly these crimes are drug offenses, multiple DUIs, B&E. When you go through processing people will literally tell the CEO I’m wet from whatever gang. So that their housed with their gang.
