@@EUMadeSimple There has been a solution up for debate in the case of NATO membership, which could also be applied to EU membership. In particular, either NATO or EU membership could be granted with Article 5, and the status of a non-Schengen country encompassing only the territory under the de jure control of the Georgian government. For example, as a case scenario, West Germany and Cyprus could be mentioned, respectively. Of course, this is intended as a temporary solution to circumvent the Russian "de facto veto", and once the opportunity arises, the Russian-occupied territories could be incorporated too. Last but not least, as one would expect, the Russian state propaganda has been deeply invested in discrediting this solution since it's in the interest of Putin to keep the status quo - by trying to sell it as giving up on the Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region. However, I see it as the only remedy for the Georgian state to get out of this vicious cycle and excel at political and economic reforms.

I don't know, I'm British and thought it was a crazy idea that the UK left the EU, I can't see us joining any time soon for a number of reasons.
The main reason is the EU and it's members, it's highly likely that even if the UK wanted to join, the EU or one of its members would block us joining for at least 2 decades or more, after all, not much has changed in the UK and the UK has always been a troublesome member, if the EU was to let us back in, they are going to want to see some major shifts in how the political system sees the EU projects, as well as the media and public, all that takes a lot of time to change and for now, there is no real incentive for the EU to want us back after how the UK has behaved.
With that said, the UK could join the single market and custom union, that would protect the economy and living standards but the UK wouldn't have a say in EU law making that the UK would have to abide by, maybe that's something the UK will just have to accept to get back on good terms with the EU and it's members.
Truth be told, with everything that's going on in the UK with Scotland, Northern Ireland and even Wales talking more about independence, it's going to be hard to predict the next 10 years for the UK because unless this government gets its act together, I can see one or two of the UK members leaving the UK union over the next decade.
Basically, as long as this Tory lot is in power, there is no hope in getting on good terms with the EU because they are going out of their way to pick a fight with the EU and then we have Labour that are too weak and scared to death to even mention Brexit that things don't bold well for the UK.
The only silver lining in all this is the Tories themselves, if they keep going the way they are doing, keep protecting Boris and the hard line Brexiteers, they could implode by the next election, that could open up the door for closer ties between the EU and UK but I suspect that would only be the case if the Tories get humiliated at the elections which they might be heading in that direction and if the Tories are smart, they would get rid of Boris and the hardline Brexiteers in the party because they are dragging the party down and personally, I hope the Tories are dumb and stick with Boris so they can sink.

The 37 country issue is easy to solve.
Back when Romania and Bulgaria were in talks for accession, the EU was also working on the European Constitution. As such, one of the conditions for Romania and Bulgaria's accession was that they'd be defacto in favour of the Constitution.
There is zero reason any new members can't have, as part of the accession criteria, a requirement that they be defacto in favour of any effort to move away from the veto system.

I personally project them to open the negotiations in someway by the end of 2023.
Also to consider one thing Moldova and Ukraine has a very loud advocates in Brussels such as Romania who is pushing for Moldova based on it’s special historical relationship and Poland pushing hard for Ukraine. Although also both of them have a significant high support from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania.
Regarding Moldovas territorial breakaway region it is present but it is not a religious or racial conflict, it is mostly based on corruption and mobs affairs.
Once Moldova would be able to set in place its proposed judicial system gaps there is a good chance this conflict would be solved with no casualties.

@@77belts Well, the Bulgarian govt already dropped their demands, or at least signed an agreement... and the EU Commission was frustrated with them cause it took so long & it roadblocked N.Macedonia from starting negociations *now.* But I agree that the Bulgarian minority shouldn't be discriminated against there - then again, the EU didn't seem to think that's an issue... So it's a tricky subject.
But anyway, you say after the next EU expansion it should be dropped - could that have something to do with not wanting/trusting those countries with veto power inside EU? Cause they would be from the West Balkans, maybe Eastern Europe, and so on? 🤔

Thank you for the great work you put in! As a Turkish citizen, I largely agree. I would say we have no chance at all due to issues you mentioned and it's a Muslim country. IMO in this decade only candidate with a real shot is Montenegro. I don't expect any other country to join soon. I'd like to add that Serbia will probably won't join at all. I have many Serb friends and they are almost all anti-EU and I understand that. Bosnia should be just above us cause their chance is extremely slim. Georgia and Moldova have territorial issues so it's difficult to solve. I believe EU has largely reached its limits. Last member to join was Croatia and that was almost a decade ago. The way I see Turkey's membership is very complicated.
Turkey is very diversed county and I mean very diversed. As a guy who has been living here for almost a decade it's very hard whether Turkey is secular country or just Islamic.
Yet I think that you can't deny that Turkey is utterly secular in a lot of political, economic and cultural point of views. Yet people might confuse that people also whom I have lived with are undescribable in one total sense. You can see your neighbor downstairs being a typical Muslim and your neighbor upstairs being completely the type of guy that'd through an alcoholic party everyday. So I want to conclude this comment by saying; modernization in Turkey may not be stable and perfect, yet if you take closer look you'd find a country you can never define.. and to understand this you have to understand what is modernization and look at other examples.. because it seems that you can really suppress and change a whole country's history, culture, values, politics and economic by just "modernization".
And I'm probably wrong but this is my opinion built on sociology studies in books and history in general..

Cyprus is in the EU, while half of it is occupied. Croatia also has/had some disputed territories. So that's not the problem at all. Also, the conflict in Moldova is frozen, so it's not dangerous). Serbia is totally a pro-russian dictatorship and yet they started their negotations to join EU long time ago. Why? Russian factor! Eu is trying to remove the russian influence in these countries by giving them membership.
On the other hand, Kosovo has been promised visa liberalization over 10 years ago and yet here we are, they just got another promise for 2024. Why? This last part made no sense at all. Just because they are not *performing* that well as a democracy *yet,* doesn't mean they have "differing opinions on what that should be" - or in other words, *aren't even trying & prefer autoritarianism.* 🤨 Extremely baseless & bigotted remark.

As for the reforms & corruption - they are currently *working* on them, person... 🙂 That's what the EU accession criteria (at least the bulk of it) is mainly about...
Romania & Bulgaria got the CVM supervision program when they joined - *precisely* so they can deal with some of the judiciary & corruption issues further. And have made great progress since.
Currently, Hungary ranks lower on the corruption index than Romania, for example (meaning worse) - and this wouldn't have happened if they received the CVM, I think. *Yet,* they are still a pretty successul & integrated member of the EU, in most areas. Being in the Schengen zone, OSCE & all.
So, all these are things which can be resolved through time & EU assistance.

To be honest it all depends on the economy. Albania, Montenegro, Macedonia will join before the end of the decade. If Romania, poland, Bulgaria keep getting wealthier and EU gdp output, salaries keep growing, countries like serbia or bonsia will have far more pressure from the population. The balkans are surrounded by EU borders. I think geography plays a very very impoetant role when analysing rhe far diatant future. Bosnia, serbia, kosovo, Moldova will join, maybe 2030's 2040's but if we project a succeaful EU they will join. In my opinion Ukraine, Georgia, turkey are the ones that i think would be harder to predictingin a distant future bc of russia. Russia has made a succesful geoeatrategic move because EU future looked far better before thw attack (energy is gonna fuck us up the next 3-4 years) and that was the whole problem for them.

The Ottoman Empire has been mixed in with European politics for centuries. Culturally, yes they were more linked with the Middle East. Socialist values, etc are again not inherently European. You're thinking everything through a western European lens (including your "Age of Revolution").The continent is much bigger than that. This had great consequences in shaping the continent: scientific research became more free and unrelated with religious dogmas or limits (was notorious in all European countries the infamous case of Galileo's trial), philosophers became more free and open to new theories gradually reaching to The Age of enlightenment with great philosophers as Kant, Rousseau, Voltaire, Hume, Locke who helped to criticize the old "ancient regime" and to extend the old aristocratic liberties to all human beings. This philosophical premise helped unleashing the French Revolution with his "Universal Declaration of human Rights" etc. etc. It was a long, contradictory, har-fought history which had, though, as its goal, the full realization of human dignity.

    @tim_d_jong 2 года назад +21

I don't really agree with this listing. I think that a country very pro-EU such as Ukraine and Georgia will join much sooner than Serbia, if Serbia joins at all. They are way too pro-Russia and prefer to get closer with Russia rather than with the EU. I also think that we're better off without them since this would create a lot of problems and a lot of vetoes. It'll be more like having a second Hungary. We should only let countries join who are very pro-EU, not hesitant or pro-Russia. so my ranking would be :
    1. Montenegro
    2. North Macedonia and Albania
    3. Moldova (when the problem with Transnistia will be resolved, so when Russian troops will be completely out of the country and all the necessary reforms will be put in place)
    4. Ukraine and Georgia (when the war stops, as well as the occupation of any of their territories and after all the necessary reforms)
    5. Bosnia and Herzegovina
    6. Serbia and Kosovo (if they ever join, I'm not sure and I don't think that Serbia will join for at least another 20 years if they ever were to join)
    7. Turkey (after a change in leadership, pro-EU leader, pro-EU society and deep reforms. I don't see them joining for at least another 20-30 years).
You are allowed to think differently, but this is just my opinion, I'm not saying that this will be true. I'm not insulting any country nor giving false hopes to anyone, this is just my opinion based on my experience and my knowledge. I know that there are also some pro-EU people in Serbia, Turkey and other countries. Please let me know if you live in a country which is not pro-EU while you are pro-EU 🇪🇺

There are some good points. I am also very unsure about Serbia. The only reason I put them at third place is because a future very pro-EU government might be able to change things quickly. Plus, once Montenegro, north macedonia and Albania join, it may create more momentum among the other Western Balkan states. Moldova and Ukraine just have a lot territorial issues that are difficult to resolve... But then again Serbia has the problem with Kosovo...
It's a very difficult one and other than the top 3 in my video I am very unsure :)

    • @Omidion

Culturally Serbia was the gate between the Ottoman Empire and the West, also culturally Serbian royalty was mixed with western royalty. Even at the end of WW2 Serbia remained neutral, not pro west nor pro east, even founded the "non aligned movement". But in all reality Serbia was always leaning with the west, culturally (media, clothing, cuisine...) now everyone knows a bit of English, even the older folk (rarely anyone knows Russian).
In both World Wars Serbia was an ally and always had a close relationship with Russia, but real influence was pro-west. We had our OWN brand of communism that worked and Tito never wanted to get under Stalins boot.
But...the dissolvement of Yugoslavia, sanctions by the West and later on the bombardment of 1999. did leave a fcking bitter taste. Serbia got bitch slapped by the West...hard, it started getting on it's feet in recent years. While Russia did try to help, it didn't put a dagger in our back.
So saying that Serbia is pro Russian is an overstatement, no one wants to be Russias puppet/colony but in this conflict...while Serbia feels for Ukraine and knows how it feels to get raped by a stronger foe, most people see that conflict as Russia VS NATO (mainly USA), and that's why you would confuse things. It's very sad to see two slavic nations fighting, the people can distance them selves and see the thing that happened when the West was the aggressor. (sorry, got too much into it, still get chills when i hear an air raid siren on movies)
Up until 2012. Serbia had an democratic pro-west government and people were ok with it, they were corrupt and made some bad decisions so the people wanted change and boy did everyone regret that. Like in the USA people wanted change and got Trump, Serbians got Aleksandar Vucic who is pro...corruption and won't get off his place of power until he dies of old age, a true autocrat. He's more of a "don Corleone" than a leader or ruler of a country, has dreams of greatness and wants to balance (like Tito) between West and East and is willing to sell everything and do any concession that will allow him to stay in power longer.
Lastly I thought that Serbia should enter EU and do what ever, but now...after everything that happened...not sure that Serbia needs to. EU and NATO are almost synonymous terms, both manipulated by US. EU doesn't seem that strong (economically or militaristically) for it to appear as a savior. Serbia is past saving, it was in the mud for so long...it stayed in the mud while the west walked away. The feeling is that EU think Serbia is not a part of Europe, just a small flea that wants a ride, an low life second cousin twice removed from aunts side. And after a while Russia and Chine showed interest (yes, they show interest because they see something for them selves) while the west expects Serbia to chase it like a hot ex-girlfriend. Think most people feel that way...they'd rather stay "non aligned" until more favorable circumstances.
