Circassian Sands is a piano arrangement by Timur Catto, based on two original compositions. The first was composed in 1992 in Jordan by Saeed Bazoqa and has gained popularity over the years. Many of you may recognize the melody, as it was even used by the dance ensemble Kabardinka in one of their performances, which they continue to feature. The second composition was also written in Jordan in 1989 by Amer Bazoqa, Saeed’s brother and Timur’s close friend. As a tribute to his dear friends Amer and Saeed, Timur has created this beautiful piano arrangement, Circassian Sands.
Timur Catto began his music career studying under Doris Frerichs at the Juilliard School, later continuing at the Manhattan School of Music. Alongside his classical training, he worked with the Kavkaz community in New Jersey, teaching dance and music at the American Karachay-Kavkaz Benevolent Association (AKBA) from 2007-2015. Timur also composed scores for the films Ivory Shadows and Let Our Fame Be Unheard. As lead composer at Gear Studios, he arranged music for dance performances by AKBA and Narts Dance Ensembles from 2009-2015.
Between 1983 and 2000, Saeed and Amer consistently produced at least one full Circassian musical show every year, with multiple productions in some years. They created hundreds of compositions and productions, deeply infusing their work with the rich heritage and spirit of Circassian culture. In 1989, Amer relocated to the United States, where he continued his work in music and media production, while Saeed remained in Amman, Jordan, inspiring a new generation of Circassian folklore enthusiasts and continuing to produce masterpiece after masterpiece.
Their diverse range of productions included dance performances, instrumentals, songs, musicals, and more. Saeed and Amer were not just composers and arrangers; they played, produced, and brought to life countless hits that resonated across the globe. These works were adopted by Circassian dance and theater groups both in the homeland and throughout the diaspora, showcasing the transcendent nature of Circassian music.
The Bazoqa brothers revolutionized Circassian music by integrating it into the technological age, proving that modern recording studios and media advancements are essential tools for preserving Circassian folklore and heritage. Their pioneering work has led to the contemporary preservation and celebration of Circassian identity. If Circassian culture is to thrive amidst the challenges of our historical legacies and the pressures of globalization, it will be through the innovative technological mediums that Saeed and Amer so masterfully introduced and promoted.
Thank you, Timur Catto, for this wonderful tribute and for your amazing composition.
