This was a very moving and interesting episode, well written, well acted and well directed. I agree, David Harper especially was great in all of his scenes. The crew even learned to play cricket.

Hi, Judy. I like the color combinations you're wearing today! Very flattering. I have a confession, since you're discussing an episode partly about having a scrupulous conscience! While I have seen Episodes 6 to the end, I'm not as familiar with the content. I tend to rerun from The Homecoming to the end of Season 5. So with all the recognition of both the writer of The Burden and some highlighted role by David Harper, in 2025 I shall watch Seasons 6 to the end as dearly as Seasons 1 -5. ATM, I'm enamored of The Best Christmas season 5! The story, the acting, the pretty filming have a calming and cheering effect on me. It's extraordinary how Miss Corby was able to act through the results of the stroke. Her face and eye animations are on point and rich. That car toppling on Jim Bob is horrifying! Little John Curtis' face, "Oh, wow!" is so cute! To all Walton's in the cold snap, stay warm! Thanks, Judy, for all the work you do to create these wonderful Walton's Moments! ❤

    That’s the style Judy !
Pack up your troubles in your old kitbag and smile, smile, smile. 😊
It’s a long long way to Tipperary but my heart’s right there.
Looking marvelous in medium blue and light gray.
Judy that tune reminds me of my grandfather ( dad’s side ) he was a teamster driver horse drawn in Europe WWI for the U.S. Army. Without supplies no army can function long.
He got caught in a phosgene gas attack and injured his lungs.
I met a lady ( in her 90’s then many years ago ) who knew him before the war and she told me that he was as independent as a hog on ice but would give you the shirt off his back.
He had 13 kids by my grandmother my dad the oldest ( more than Waltons ) so that part still worked 😊.

Hi Judy. Thank you for choosing a deep episode, highlighting David Harper's talent, but with funny moments as well.I really do love how Mary Ellen just naturally fell into the role of mother, even though Jim-Bob did not find it so great! You really played that side of Mary Ellen so well.Did you like playing the bossier side of her character as much as we enjoyed seeing her take center stage? And good thing that their 'real' mama was away ,as I wonder if Elizabeth would have been allowed to bring the insects into her bedroom?

That was an amazing episode which gave Jim-Bob unexpected dimensions! It seemed obvious by his 'rebellious' and 'wild' 'tude in the first part of the episode that he was upset over Olivia's illness and absence- not having fun nor just taking advantage of the fact that no one else there could rein him in as well as Olivia! Then, the whole evident 180 after the car's collapse seemed as though he was trying to destroy himself another way via destroying his REAL personality to become one of a unit. Yes, I think John's talk and telling Jim-Bob that he was not responsible for everything bad happening to the family was good. However, I can't help but also believe that there was STILL a part of Jim-Bob who believed he had to be at least be willing to sacrifice himself when he signed up for the War upon his high school graduation- and even though that later episode totally avoided the issue of Olivia's not being there to witness her youngest son's graduation, I definitely think her absence was a contributing factor in his decision!
On a lighter note, I wonder if they might have set up a fake bedside table in another soundstage when the crickets escaped Elizabeth's jar in the girl's room? I mean, do you recall hearing them chirp in the days, weeks, months, etc. thereafter? I can't say I'm surprised that Erin loathed the idea of even jarred insects sharing her room (and also think Mary Ellen in her earlier years would have had her fun openly teasing Erin's 'prissiness' over said insects). Erin seemed to somehow often got left holding the bag re things going wrong in her room (e.g. remember when one of I think Ben's female dogs bore her single puppy right on top of Erin's coat and bedspread?).
I wonder if perhaps since Mary Ellen (as determined and bossy as she was) couldn't have begun to take Olivia's place that that's what ultimately might have gotten them to bring in the more mature in years Cousin Rose to have attempted to have at least tried to corral the younger Waltons in Olivia's absence?
    Anyway, thanks for this!

Thank you Judy for this deep episode that is chock full of extra info. I loved the subplot, too, of Elizabeth and her insects,on the one hand interesting, and on the other hand,a little much, but that is only because I have a phobia of insects. I have deep respect for you actors on the set. Hopefully they did contain the insects, because can you imagine you hitting your mark, and then have some little critters come out from behind the sofa!!. Although, the adorable toddler playing John Curtis didn't seem to have any trouble, did he?😊 And glad the director filmed his spontaneous reaction.

When that car fell on Jimbob, I was shocked as I didn't expect it. His quest to become more religious struck a chord as something similar happened to me at the tender age of 18 although it was no car that fell on me but something totally different that happened but had the same result of me becoming more religious as I too, had thought I had been in the wrong at the time but hadn't been. Thank you Judy for todays segment and best wishes to you as always from your waltonian superfan in a cool England😉

David and Ronnie Claire had some wonderful scenes throughout the series. There's a great scene between Jim Bob and Corabeth later in season 7 in "The Tailspin" while he's fixing her tire after they had had another conflict. Ronnie Claire gave us a wonderful bit of insight into Corabeth and the dreams she had as a young woman for her life. "Do you think I don't know what people say about me?" She and David both did an amazing job in that and whenever they interacted. They were wonderful foils for each other. The young man who was trying to figure out his place in the world and the older woman who could sometimes be harsh but really did understand what that felt like. Those two really were more alike than was evident on the surface.

Hi! This is not a criticism just an observation. I know the writers changed throughout the course of the series and that probably explains this. It seems like Corabeth being a distant cousin to the family is often forgotten. If she has a brother that is a minister that means he is a distant cousin as well. Also, later in the series Ronnie Claire Edwards also plays Corabeth's sister which would also make her a distant cousin.

I was just watching this episode the other day !! I’m glad Jim Bob and John had their talk at the end, Jim Bob finally letting it all out. The whole family was “in a mood” but that’s understandable, they were scared and worried for Olivia. Everyone was dealing with it in their own way. It got me feeling bad for Jim Bob and Elizabeth, because they were the youngest of the siblings and everybody already had Grandpa, Grandma, Olivia and John. They were coping the only way they knew how. Totally relatable, after my father died, I became more withdrawn and moody. I started spending money on everything and just wanted to do everything I want. With all of that and with other tragedies happening soon right after, I became more stressed and anxious.

I think one of the first ones I loved him in and one of my favorites is The Search. This episode he is lost in a different way and not really able to control all that has been happening in their lives and with that very special bond he had with Olivia was just too much for him when she left. This was great as always, Judy!! Thank you for all you do!! 🥰

Hey kiddo! Yes, I feel the same about David. Such a gifted actor. When I was in line to meet him in Waco, I made my way to his table with so much confidence. I pointed at a Pic of his on his table to sign, unable to say a word. When he asked me my name, I couldn't remember it! All I could say was, " can I have a hug?". And he did!. I said, "Thank you sir," he smiled, that Jim Bob smile and said, "Your parents raised you right" and hugged me again. What a treasure he is and such a sweet soul. Laid back and down to Earth. This was a great segment kiddo, you nailed it again as always. Hugs to ya.

Erin and Elizabeth getting on each others last nerves !! But it’s understandable, most people see bugs as disgusting, and some even have entomophia. They say girls are more afraid of bugs because they are genetically predisposed to develop a fear of what they see as potentially dangerous creatures. Elizabeth was always curious, had a thirst for the knowledge and the unknown. She became more interested in her academic studies as she got older. Her doing her bug research reminded me of when you did the tadpole/bull frogs experiment back in S1. Erin was always more girly, proper or could be prissy. And more easily disgusted by things like that. Elizabeth and Mary Ellen weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.

Hi Judy, I was just thinking about something. You expressed how close the cast was to each other. But, I was wondering. Obviously all of you have performed scenes where you are really tearing into each other. It's dramatic and, of course is very engaging. But, do you ever worry or grow concerned that this would leave hurt feelings off camera? Even though you are playing characters and reading lines, that emotion has to be sincere for it to work so how do you separate it?

When the opening credits (are they actually called “credits” at the beginning?) flash briefly across the screen as you introduce an episode, I try to take note of the Roman Numeral copyright year.
