향유고래 [sperm whale, 香油/マッコウクジラ(抹香鯨)
몸길이 수컷 15∼18m, 암컷 11∼13m, 몸무게 수컷 57t, 암컷 43.5t이다. 향고래·말향고래라고도 한다. 대형의 이빨고래류로서, 이빨고래류 중에서 가장 크다. 몸빛깔은 회색이나 배쪽에 옅은색의 얼룩점이 있는 개체가 많다. 몸빛깔은 나이와 더불어 백화(白化)하는 경향이 있다. 머리는 성장에 따라 커져서 몸길이의 3분의 1 정도를 차지하게 된다. 등지느러미는 없지만, 파도 모양의 피부돌기가 있다. 아래턱은 통나무처럼 가늘고 길며, 한쪽에 20∼28개의 큰 이빨이 있지만, 위턱의 이빨은 퇴화되어 눈에 띄지 않는다. 가슴지느러미는 몸에 비해 대단히 작다.
잠수력이 뛰어나 1시간이나 잠수할 때가 있으며, 또 수심 2,200m나 되는 해저의 전선에 걸린적도 있다. 주로 오징어를 먹지만 때로 물고기도 먹는다. 임신기간은 15∼16개월이며, 3∼5년마다 한배에 1마리를 낳는다. 거대한 머리에서 품질 좋은 기름을 얻을 수 있고, 대장에 덩어리 형태로 생기는 병적인 생성물은 용연향(龍涎香)이라 하는데, 안정제로 쓰이는 값비싼 향료로 알려져 있다. 세계 각지의 바다에 분포한다.-두산백과-
The sperm whale or cachalot[a] (Physeter macrocephalus) is the largest of the toothed whales and the largest toothed predator. It is the only living member of the genus Physeter and one of three extant species in the sperm whale family, along with the pygmy sperm whale and dwarf sperm whale of the genus Kogia.
The sperm whale is a pelagic mammal with a worldwide range, and will migrate seasonally for feeding and breeding.[5] Females and young males live together in groups, while mature males (bulls) live solitary lives outside of the mating season. The females cooperate to protect and nurse their young. Females give birth every four to 20 years, and care for the calves for more than a decade. A mature sperm whale has few natural predators, although calves and weakened adults are sometimes killed by pods of killer whales (orcas).
Mature males average 16 metres (52 ft) in length but some may reach 20.7 metres (68 ft), with the head representing up to one-third of the animal's length. Plunging to 2,250 metres (7,382 ft), it is the third deepest diving mammal, exceeded only by the Southern elephant seal and Cuvier's beaked whale.[6][7] The sperm whale uses echolocation and vocalization as loud as 230 decibels (re 1 µPa m) underwater.[8] It has the largest brain on Earth, more than five times heavier than a human's. Sperm whales can live 70 years or more.[9][10][11]
Spermaceti (sperm oil), from which the whale derives its name, was a prime target of the whaling industry, and was sought after for use in oil lamps, lubricants, and candles. Ambergris, a solid waxy waste product sometimes present in its digestive system, is still highly valued as a fixative in perfumes, among other uses. Beachcombers look out for ambergris as flotsam.[12] Sperm whaling was a major industry in the 19th century, depicted in the novel Moby-Dick. The species is protected by the International Whaling Commission moratorium, and is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.From Wikipedia
