It's actually from excessive touring in the early days and also the difficult vocals in his songs. This performance is just God awful. He CANNOT sing this song anymore. I have so much respect for Jon and think he's an amazing artist, but it's time to retire the power ballads. He doesn't have the range to sing them anymore. He gave us over 30 years of AWESOME music, but honestly he sounds VERY old here. Cigarettes may have played a part, but it's just 30 years of overusing his voice. It's such a shame. He wants to keep doing what he loves to do and keep his fans happy, but this was so painful to listen to.
