I own a 1990 LS400. 39K miles. It’s an amazing car except for the 19mpg. It not a grandpa car, it’s a grandma car. Nobody ever complains about comfort in the back seat. You could take the pickiest grandma for a full days drive through a National Park, and she would fall asleep half way through and not complain about a neck or back ache when she wakes up. If you think 90’s Toyota was peak Toyota for reliability, this is the boss level Toyota of that era. Its so quiet inside while driving, it’s eery. 75 pounds of sound deadening material used, you could probably use that car to record music inside…..while the engine is running. The only reason it’s a cheap used car is high miles and so many of them are still on the road, they are not scarce. There are documentaries about the building and design of this car. Toyota spent close to $1billion on this car. It has a .29 drag coefficient. The 1990 Porsche 911 had a .33DC, the closest to the LS400. How? Channeled undercarriage and a trunk lid that performs the function of a spoiler. Yeah. You have to buy V rated tires, because this bad boy can go 165. This crusher of a cruiser isn’t about 0-60. It’s about 60-infinity and beyond.
after owning my 98 LS400 for the last 4 years i can confirm the transmissions are pretty bad. once they start going bad they go bad pretty quickly, in my case the car started hiccupping randomly when i would put it into drive until one day when i tried to put it in drive the car didnt shift it just remained at the same idle. reverse and everything still worked but drive never worked again. P0710 for trans fluid temp and a P0700 for a TCM malfunction were what i got when it comes to codes. when i first purchased the car i did a simple drain and fill so it had fresh unburnt fluid in there. most people dont change the fluid as it is labeled as "lifetime fluid" at the dealer. got the car running now otherwise, really really nice car with a good ride. thanks for the vid!
I own one and yes the gas mileage is about 17. Its heavy but my model has the power mode and some other features that are nice. With it being heavy its kinda easy to slide its weight around using it.the seats are comfy too but after market is limited and racing seats wouldnt look good in the ls400. The air suspension makes it feel loose sometimes.
I try to remember to drivve it as intended as a luxury vehicle so i almost never try to go over 65mph. i can pull a nice 24 going straight on a flat land but SoCal is mostly inclines so i get 19/20 @@DEFCON400
You forgot to mention that the 94' and before years had a forged crank, could take 600 hp reliably ( well 750 even with a stock bottom end, but i wouldn't recommend to daily it ) but another bad thing is that finding performance parts ls400s are still hard
As someone who just did the starter on a 1997 ls400, it is literally the hardest thing I have done on a car engine before. Who designs the starter in the middle of the engine smh
There were 3 Generations of the ls400, 90-94 First face lift 95-97, Final ls400 Version 98-2000. The last gen had a more powerful engine and given the 5 speed tranny
The second generation also had a more powerful engine. Every generation got a more powerful engine. The second generation (95-97) is the lightest, has the highest top speed and is the most fuel efficient. The 1998-2000 model is good though as it does indeed have an extra speed/gear and got VVT-I. In my country it is also a tax bracket higher due to it’s increased weight, but that’s not a big issue. I have a 1995 due to the practicality. The earlier ones have more problems and have less power. I couldn’t find a 98 at the time so I was happy with a 95 as it in some ways better.
@@sawjr.1213 lmao ur mom jokes, hilarious I agree tho, they are slow and they're not my favorite cars but they look really nice and they're not too expensive atm. tbh i prefer e90 for the same price but yeah...
i dont know much but those mfs are fast, homie hit a railroad track crossing going 100 in one and we caught 5 feet of air easily and bottomed out, was still fine after.
Okay but it actually was built to be a race car, Ik they’re heavy but the engines are almost fully built and we’re intended for a Toyota racing series but when it got canceled it got repurposed and put in the ls400 so although the comfort and quiet of the car is a nice luxury item you can strip the car boost it and tear up some tracks

Good afternoon. I have a 1990 ls 400. Do you know a shop I can go to in sc nc or ga
Theres a community of boat racers that buy LS400s and Crown Vics for cheap drifting :D. Very well put together video!

I can get around 20-25 mpg in the city if you go real easy on the gas, almost pushed up to 28mpg on highway

If you get a 400, def pick up a 98-00. It’s basically a 430 in a 400 body
I have a 1990
No it’s not, the 430s have more torque and some have a 6 speed
how?
I’m late asf but idk about that one
Mines a 1996 and I’m never getting rid of it, best car I’ve ever owned by far, drives like a dream even with 220k miles
90-94 look the same. Don’t forget that 95-97 is pre facelift
Gotta love the Skyrim music

Honestly the 20mpg mostly comes from the transmissions. Most automatic v8s compared to manuals had god awful milage during nineties to early 2000s
